This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of retail are old as trade itself. Barter was the oldest form of trade. For centuries, most merchandise was sold in market place or by peddlers. Medieval markets were dependent on local sources for supplies of perishable food because Journey was far too slow to allow for long distance transportation. However, customer did travel considerable distance for specialty items. The peddler, who provided people with the basic goods and necessities that they could not be self sufficient in, followed one of the earliest forms of retail trade. Even in prehistoric time, the peddler traveled long distances to bring products to locations which were in short supply. “They could be termed as early entrepreneurs who saw the opportunity in serving the needs of the consumers at a profit” Later retailers opened small shops, stocking them with such produce. As towns and cities grew, these retail stores began stocking a mix of convenience merchandise, enabling the formation of high-street bazaars that become the hub retail activity in every city. In the great sweep of social and retail history, the ‘modern’ shopping experience can be said to have commenced with the appearance of the department store in the middle of the 19th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Toward Islamization of Disciplines, is a compilation of selected papers presented at the Third International Conference on Islamization of Knowledge, sponsored by the International Institute of Islamic Thought, in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Culture of Malaysia, July 26-31 1984 A.C. / 27th Shawwal -2nd Dhu al Qiddah 1404 A.H. This Conference, which attracted major leaders, educators and scholars from around the world, confirmed the growing appeal of the concept of "Islamization" among Muslim scholars; moreover it indicated that this concept has spread beyond the bounds of academia and has become the concern of peoples, institutions and governments. The selected papers, reproduced in this book, aptly reflect this historic trend. Some of the highlights offered in this book include a keynote address by Malaysia's Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Muhammad; a pioneering critique on Western Anthropology, Toward Islamic Anthropology, by Akbar Ahmad; a revealing exegesis of Western philosophy, The Balance Sheet of Western Philosophy in This Century, by Roger Garoudy; and 'AbdulHamid AbuSulayman's Concepts of Reconstruction: Methodology in Contemporary Muslim Thought (in Arabic). Both Muslim and non-Muslim scholars and researchers will find a wealth of thought-provoking ideas and concepts among these works.

This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Megacities of over 10 million inhabitants are unique entities in their own right, both challenging and supporting the policies, governance and cohesion of states. In developing and developed economies, the rise of megacities can be seen to have negative and positive effects; from exacerbating and deepening societal problems inherent in inequality and poverty, to increasing opportunities for innovation, education, interconnectivity and development. The Rise of Megacities takes a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to analysis of their growth. It examines both the major new challenges that the expansion of megacities brings for development at large, and the opportunities they might create for the public good. In addition, it shows how more established cities, such as Tokyo, New York or European examples can provide lessons for governance and development of rapidly urbanizing populations. Using case studies and academic theory it takes into account both the similarities and differences of megacities and gives a comprehensive study of them. This book is perfect for students and researchers of development economics, urban studies, international relations and the social sciences, as well as those interested in how the world economy is changing through globalization.

Download or read book The Other Kuala Lumpur written by Yeoh Seng Guan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kuala Lumpur, like many Southeast Asian cities, has changed very significantly in the last two or three decades – expanding its size, and 'modernising' and 'globalising' its built environment. For many people these changes represent 'progress' and 'development'. This book, however, focuses on the more marginalised residents of Kuala Lumpur. Among others, it considers street hawkers and vendors, refugees, the urban poor, religious minorities and a sexuality rights group, and explores how their everyday lives have been adversely affected by these recent changes. The book shows how urban renewal, the law and ethno-religious nationalism can work against these groups in wanting to live and work in the capital city of Malaysia.

Book Synopsis EU Foreign Relations Law by : Marise Cremona
Download or read book EU Foreign Relations Law written by Marise Cremona and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-07-25 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reappraises the constitutional fundamentals of EU foreign relations law. The essays in the book examine and reassess the basic principles of EU foreign relations law that have emerged over 50 years of incremental Treaty-based and judicial development and explore the particular character of the EU's "external constitution". They have been written against a background of change and debate: the deliberation over the character of the appropriate constitutional framework which has surrounded the drafting of the Constitutional and Reform Treaties, the increasingly cross-pillar nature of much EU external action, and renewed interest in the accountability of foreign relations policy and practice to democratic and judicial review within and without the EU. This collection will be of interest not only to EU foreign relations law specialists but also to those concerned with broader constitutional issues within EU law. In exploring the legal context in which the EU seeks to develop an international identity, and to structure and execute policies at the international level, the collection will also interest those working in international relations.
