Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magnitude and Costs of Groundwater Contamination From Agricultural Chemicals: A National Perspective This report assesses the scope and costs of groundwater contamination caused by agricultural fertilizers and pesticides in the United States. While other agricultural activities such as livestock operations may contaminate groundwater in some localities, we focus on crop chemicals because of their broad-scale use across diverse regions of the country. We combine data from a variety of sources to develop an overview of regions potentially affected by agriculturally induced chemical contamination of groundwater. The report also summarizes the types of damages incurred by agriculturally polluted groundwater along with an appraisal of the costs of preventing potential damages to health and property. The costs of these damages represent the benefits of groundwater protection. The policies and programs now being put into place by several States, including Arizona, California, and Wisconsin, and under discussion by other States and the u.s. Environmental Protection Agency (epa), require a better understanding of the benefits of groundwater protection. Only when the benefits are well understood can they be compared with the social and agricultural costs of alternative prevention and control measures, leading to the identification of efficient policy options. Book excerpt: Pesticides in groundwater can contaminate drinking water and threaten the health of communities. How does this contamination occur and what should be done about this pressing problem? This new book uses a case-study approach to describe the discovery of the problem in four major agricultural states, to summarize the most recent data on the problem, and to review the status of the problem from both technological and policy perspectives. It also addresses the controversial questions of what levels of residues are acceptable, who should bear the costs of drinking water that is already contaminated, and how federal scientific resources can best be used to aid state initiatives in addressing this problem.

The studies focus on the economic aspects of water quality including identifying the polluters' actions and incentives, designing and comparing control mechanisms, analyzing the costs and benefits of water quality programmes, and finally managing transboundary water quality. They all make recommendations for improving water quality through changing incentives, programmes and/or policies.

Book excerpt: More and more farmers are adopting a diverse range of alternative practices designed to reduce dependence on synthetic chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and antibiotics; cut costs; increase profits; and reduce the adverse environmental consequences of agricultural production. Alternative Agriculture describes the increased use of these new practices and other changes in agriculture since World War II, and examines the role of federal policy in encouraging this evolution, as well as factors that are causing farmers to look for profitable, environmentally safe alternatives. Eleven case studies explore how alternative farming methods have been adoptedâ€"and with what economic resultsâ€"on farms of various sizes from California to Pennsylvania.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supplying crops with adequate nitrogen is vital to ensuring food supplies. Once nitrogen is added to the soil, it is subject to chemical transformations of the nitrogen-cycle including transformation to nitrate. Excessive amounts of accumulated nitrate may then leach out of the soil and could potentially enter and contaminate drinking water supplies. The purpose of this book is to examine the subject of nitrogen management and ground water protection. The issue of maintaining ground water quality is addressed primarily from an agronomic point of view. Topics covered include: health and economic aspects of nitrate in drinking water; nitrate sources; ground water nitrate in the USA and other developed countries; transport, leaching and accounting for nitrogen; soil, nitrogen, crop and water management; and nitrate in aquifer systems. The book contains a keyword index and is organized into thirteen chapters, each with appropriate references, tables and figures. Chapter authors are among the leading experts on the subject of nitrate and ground water quality.Readers to whom the book is directed include soil scientists and agronomists, agricultural engineers (irrigation and drainage), environmental scientists, agricultural policy makers, and hydrologists.
