Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a horizontally stratified layer of gyrotropic medium is discussed. Derivation of a comprehensive representation for magneto-ionic coupling coefficients allows interpretation of the physical significance of the coupling. Introduction of an invariant quantity for an inhomogeneous medium becomes an important guide for numerical solutions of the wave equation. Numerical results of magneto-ionic coupling coefficients are presented. Based on region properties, characteristic wave types are defined: for the isotropic region, linearly polarized waves are used; for the anisotropic region, elliptically polarized waves generally are applied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report deals with coupled waves, or coupled modes in arbitrary inhomogeneous n-wave systems. The partial waves, which make up the total wave field (of some physical kind) are expressed either in terms of so called inhomogeneous wave numbers, or of regular homogeneous ones (with corresponding phase integrals). The partial wave amplitudes are related to each other by first order coupled amplitude equations, with coupling coefficients depending upon the physical nature of the modes appearing in the system. These wave couplings are formally simple only when the partial waves have symmetrical properties of some kind (which is the case in many practical applications). A great number of coupled mode systems are analysed, compared, and discussed in considerable detail, with applications for example to magnetoionic, and to active (amplifying), inhomogeneous media. This report represents a major effort to relate all coupled wave phenomena to each other, irrespective of their particular physical background; in short to present a unified theory of multi-mode couplings in inhomogeneous media. Book excerpt: By means of matrix formalism any linearized form of wave equations in total fields, which govern the propagation in an inhomogeneous multi-mode system can be transformed to coupled mode form. Various types of mode definition and coupled mode equations are obtained. The nature and properties of a mode definition depend upon the choice of original wave equations in total fields. Furthermore the modes can be defined by means of 'homogeneous' and 'inhomogeneous' models. The physical interpretation of the mode representation is a very important part of a coupling theory. To illuminate this situation the case of longitudinal propagation in an inhomogeneous magneto-ionic is treated by means of homogeneous and inhomogeneous mode representations. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of a plurality-count diversity combiner for fading M-ary transmissions is analyzed, and calculated error probabilities are presented graphically for alphabet sizes of 2, 8, and 32. The performance is shown to be within 3 dB of that of an optimum square-law combiner for moderate alphabet sizes when there is no restriction on the allowable number of diversity branches. It is shown that a worthwhile saving in transmitted power can be effected by using nonbinary alphabets with plurality-count combining for the transmission of binary data. The availability of extra information from the combiner for use with error-correction is discussed.

Book excerpt: A theory of hydromagnetic ionizing waves has been developed which is valid in the region in which gas pressure is negligible, compared with magnetic pressure. The theory takes into account the energy expended in partial ionization of the gas behind the wave. The usual high conductivity boundary condition behind the wave is not employed. The electric field in front of the wave is taken as a parameter. Results of this theory are compared with available experimental measurements, and show good agreement. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wheeler-Feynman absorber theory of radiation is reviewed. A proof is offered to show that a sum of advanced and retarded effects from the absorber can provide the origin of radiative reaction. This proof is different from and perhaps simpler than that of Wheeler and Feynman. From arguments of momentum and energy conservation the necessity of the absorber for the emission of radiation is demonstrated for three cases. (Author).

Book excerpt: Details of the energy band structure of degenerate n-type germanium were determined by analysis of fine structure in the 4.2K volt-ampere characteristic of germanium tunnel diodes. No shift in the relative energy of the conduction band minima was observed. The band edge is found to be exponentially distributed with 1/e energies of the order of 10 MeV. There appears to be an ordering mechanism among the group V impurity atoms used as substrate dopants. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental study on the zone refining of the binary system triphenyl antimony-benzoic acid is described. The isotope Sb124, which is a strong gamma emitter, was employed as a tracer; this allowed a rapid in situ nondestructive analysis, closely spaced experimental points, and the opportunity to study distribution as a function of varying experimental conditions. With the aid of computers (IBM 7090 and IBM 7044) apparent k's were calculated and the experimental data compared with those predicted from various mathematical models. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Druyvesteyn's solutions for electrophoretically induced gas flows in electrical discharges in gases were extended over a larger pressure range and corrected for the influence of Debye shielding effects. The effects of molecular or 'slip' flow were also taken into account. These more accurate and general solutions were applied to the reverse phenomenon of space charge field generation arising from the flow of a thermally ionized cesium plasma through a tube. Under such flow conditions, a non-linear differential equation for the axial pressure distribution was obtained but not solved. However, it was possible to obtain estimates of the ranges of cesium pressure, temperature and tube radii which would be required for sensible levels of electric power generation. Anaphoretic flow power levels of the order of 0.1 to 10 watts, in tubes of laboratory dimensions (radii of 10 cm or less), appear feasible at temperatures from 1700 to 2400K. Sensible power generation levels at lower temperatures require very large diameter tubes, and therefore are not feasible. (Author).
