Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 13 of the Handbook of Magnetic Materials, as the preceding volumes, has a dual purpose. As a textbook it is intended to be of assistance to those who wish to be introduced to a given topic in the field of magnetism without the need to read the vast amount of literature published. As a work of reference it is intended for scientists active in magnetism research. To this dual purpose, Volume 13 of the Handbook is composed of topical review articles written by leading authorities. In each of these articles an extensive description is given in graphical as well as in tabular form, much emphasis being placed on the discussion of the experimental material in the framework of physics, chemistry and material science. In Chapter 1 of this volume a general review of the experimental work on interlayer exchange coupling is presented along with a discussion of the current understanding of this field. There exists an extensive amount of scientific efforts devoted to 4f and 5f systems, including experimental and theoretical, as well as basic and applied research. Chapter 2 aims at reviewing a part of these efforts from the viewpoint of microscopic theory. Special attention is paid to the many new developments in the field. One of the intentions is to bring to the fore the darker areas of DFT theory applications. A review of novel experimental results and first-principle energy-band calculations of MOKE spectra will be presented in Chapter 3. Conventional co-operative phenomena, such as long-range order and elementary excitation, have realisations in nonmagnetic situations. This applies also to the phenomena of geometrical frustration. In Chapter 4 this topic is addressed by developing the basic principles underlying the magnetic phenomena.

Book excerpt: Electronic structure and physical properties of strongly correlated materials containing elements with partially filled 3d, 4d, 4f and 5f electronic shells is analyzed by Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT). DMFT is the most universal and effective tool used for the theoretical investigation of electronic states with strong correlation effects. In the present book the basics of the method are given and its application to various material classes is shown. The book is aimed at a broad readership: theoretical physicists and experimentalists studying strongly correlated systems. It also serves as a handbook for students and all those who want to be acquainted with fast developing filed of condensed matter physics.

Book excerpt: Materials where electrons show nearly localized rather than itinerant behaviour, such as the high-temperature superconducting copper oxides, or manganate oxides, are attracting interest due to their physical properties and potential applications. For these materials, the interaction between electrons, or electron correlation, plays an important role in describing their electronic strucuture, and the standard methods for the calculation of their electronic spectra based on the local density approximation (LDA) breakdown. This is the first attempt to describe recent approaches that go beyond the concept of the LDA, to successfully describe the electronic structure of narrow-band materials.

Book excerpt: Rare earth intermetallic compounds provide rich grounds for investigating the properties of both local moment and strongly correlated, hybridized moment systems. These areas have been intensively explored mostly on cubic and tetragonal intermetallic compounds, and very little work existed on materials with lower symmetry. Moreover, a large number of Ce-based heavy fermion compounds have been studied, whereas the analogous Yb-based ones are much rarer. We thus wanted to study local moment metamagnetism and Yb-based heavy fermion physics in hexagonal systems. The RAgGe and RPtln series belonging to the Fe2P family of hexagonal compounds allowed us to perform such studies on both local moment and strongly correlated, hybridized moment systems. The RAgGe and RPtln compounds presented in this work display anisotropic temperature and field dependent magnetization due to the crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting of the Hund's rule ground state multiplet. The TmAgGe and TbPtln members of these series display extreme planar anisotropy, which makes them well suited for a study of the angular dependent metamagnetism. We developed the three co-planar Ising-like systems model, which allowed us to determine the net distribution of the magnetic moments in the two compounds. The YbAgGe and YbPtln compounds have some properties distinct from the rest of their respective series: having low ordering temperatures and enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient [Gamma], they can be classified as stoichiometric, Yb-based heavy fermion compounds, with a magnetic field-induced quantum critical point QCP. In the former compound, a non-Fermi liquid-like NFL regime is apparent at intermediate fields, but such a behavior is more ambiguous in the YbPtln. However, a small Pt-deficiency in flux-grown YbPt0.9ln single crystals seems to stabilize, together with the magnetic field, a non-Fermi liquid-like NFL regime. In summary, TmAgGe and TbPtln are hexagonal compounds revealing complex, and yet intelligible angular dependent metamagnetism; together with the quantum critical physics found in YbAgGe and YbPtln, the RAgGe and RPtln series dramatically confirm the fertile grounds for research that can be found in these hexagonal systems.

Book excerpt: It is well known that rare earth intermetallic compounds have versatile, magnetic properties associated with the 4f electrons: a local moment associated with the Hund's rule ground state is formed in general, but a strongly correlated, hybridized state may also appear for specific 4f electronic configuration (eg. for rare earth elements such as Ce or Yb). On the other hand, the conduction electrons in rare earth intermetallic compounds, certainly ones associated with non hybridizing rare earths, usually manifest non-magnetic behavior and can be treated as a normal, non-interacted Fermi liquid, except for some 3d-transition metal rich binary or ternary systems which often manifest strong, itinerant, d electron dominant magnetic behavior. Of particular interest are examples in which the band filling of the conduction electrons puts the system in the vicinity of a Stoner transition: such systems, characterized as nearly or weakly ferromagnet, manifest strongly correlated electronic properties [Moriya, 1985]. For rare earth intermetallic compounds, such systems provide an additional versatility and allow for the study of the behaviors of local moments and hybridized moments which are associated with 4f electron in a correlated conduction electron background.
