Book excerpt: A review is given of current neutron scattering experiments on La2minus/x/Sr(subscript x)CuO4 and Nd2minus/x/Ce(subscript x)CuO4. Incommensurate magnetic excitations are observed in a high quality single crystal of La/sub 1.85/Sr/sub 0.15/CuO4, which exhibits a sharp superconducting transition at 33 K. The study of magnetic correlations in the electron-superconductor Nd2minus/x/Ce(subscript x)CuO4 is now being carried out. 18 refs., 7 figs.
Book Synopsis Short Range Tb[sup+3] Spin Correlations Far Above the Two Dimensional Neel Temperature in Pb[sub 2]r[sub 2]TbCu[sub 3]O[sub 8]. by :
Download or read book Short Range Tb[sup+3] Spin Correlations Far Above the Two Dimensional Neel Temperature in Pb[sub 2]r[sub 2]TbCu[sub 3]O[sub 8]. written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas the Tb[sup+3] moments undergo antiferromagnetic ordering at T[sub N]=5.5 K, our susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering experiments indicate that significant magnetic Tb-Tb short range correlations persist to temperatures T[ge]100 K. Magnetic correlations at such high temperatures relative to T[sub N] are very unusual and they may shed new light on the relation between superconductivity and rare earth magnetism in these systems.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the ffiM Japan International Sympo sium on Strong Correlation and Superconductivity, which was held in Keidan ren Guest House at the foot of Mt. Fuji, May 21-25, 1989. The purpose of the Symposium was to provide an opportunity for discus sions on the problem of strong correlation of electrons in the context of high-Tc superconductivity. Sixty-eight scientists were invited from seven countries and forty-three papers were presented in the Symposium. Soon after the discovery ofhigh-Tc superconducting oxides, Professor P. W. Anderson proposed that the essence of high-Tc superconductivity lies in the strong correlation among the electrons in these materials. This proposal has stimulated a wide range of theoretical investigations on this profound and dif ficult problem, which are expected to lead eventually to new concepts describ ing strong electron correlation. In the Symposium, Anderson himself started lively discussions by his talk entitled "Myth and Reality in High-Tc Supercon ductivity", which was followed by various reports on theoretical studies and experimental results. Concise and thoughtful summaries of experiment and theory were given by Professors H. R. Ott and P. A. Lee, respectively. It is our hope that this volume reflects the present status of the research activity on this outstanding problem from the viewpoint of the basic physics and that it will further stimulate the effort to understand these fascinating systems, the high-Tc oxides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO sponsored Advanced Research Workshop on "Concepts in Electron Correlation" took place on the Croatian island of Hvar during the period from the 29th of September to the 3rd of October, 2002. The topic of electron correlation is a fundamental one in the field of condensed matter, and one that is being very actively studied both experimentally and theoretically at the present time. The manifestations of electron cor relation are diverse, and play an important role in systems ranging from high temperature superconductors, heavy fermions, manganite compounds with colossal magnetoresistance, transition metal compounds with metal insulator transitions, to mesoscopic systems and quantum dots. The aim of the workshop was to provide an opportunity for a dialogue between exper imentalists and theoreticians to assess the current state of understanding, and to set an agenda for future work. There was also a follow-up workshop on the same topic where the presentations included more background and introductory material for younger researchers in the field. The papers presented in these proceedings clearly demonstrate the di versity of current research on electron correlation. They show that real progress is being made in characterising systems experimentally and in developing theoretical approaches for a quantitative comparison with ex periment. The more one learns, however, the more there is to understand, and many of the contributions help to map out the territory which has yet to be explored. We hope that the articles in this volume will be a stimulus for such future work.

Book excerpt: The articles collected in this book cover a wide range of materials with extraordinary superconducting and magnetic properties. For many of the materials studied, strong electronic correlations provide a link between these two phenomena which were long thought to be highly antagonistic. The book reports both the progress in our understanding of fundamental physical processes and the advances made towards the development of devices.
