The measurements reveal large negative perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a weaker uniaxial in-plane anisotropy that are unaffected by the Pt cap. The Gilbert damping of the bare LSMO films is found to be low [alpha] = 1.9(1) × 10-3, and two-magnon scattering is determined to be significant and strongly anisotropic. The Pt cap increases the damping by 50% due to spin pumping, which is also directly detected via inverse spin Hall effect in Pt. Our research demonstrates efficient spin transport across the Pt/LSMO interface.

Book excerpt: The transfer of spin angular momentum from a spin-polarized current to a ferromagnet can generate sufficient torque to reorient the magnet's moment, thus this effect has prospective applications in spintronics. In this dissertation, the main theme of my work has been the study of spin-transfer-driven ferromagnetic resonance (STFMR) signals to understand what is the interfacial effects on the spin transfer torque (STT) in magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) devices with a nanopillar geometry and bilayer spin Hall effect structures. In the first part of my work, I have studied the bias dependence of the spin transfer torques in the as-grown and annealed FeCoB/MgO/FeCoB MTJs by ST-FMR measurement. The motivation of this work was to understand the important mechanisms contributing to the in-plane torque with a view to optimizing the switching current of devices. I have found the annealing reduces the inelastic tunneling component of the junction conductance, and creates or enhances a peak at about 0.15V above the Fermi level in the density of states of the minority band of the electrodes, which may be the reason for the asymmetry of the bias dependence of the in-plane torque. This peak location is essentially the same as the peak of the minority band states that has previously observed on the surface of bcc (100) Fe. The existence of these interfacial states can also explain the asymmetry of the TMR, and the bias dependence of both G AP and GP . As a function of temperature, my experimental STTs can be explained by magnon contributions. My results show that with a relative increase of 50% in tunneling MR, however, both in-plane torque and perpendicular torque have been depressed at low temperature, indicating that magnon assisted tunneling, which results in a spin-flip process for the tunneling electron, has a negative contribution to the spin polarization, but plays a positive role in STT, with the latter consistent with recent theoretical predictions. In the second part of my work, I have studied the spin-torque effects on the FeCoB/W bi-layer structures with different W phases. The motivation of this work was to investigate the spin Hall and spin pumping effects in this system. I have observed a greatly enhanced magnetic damping coefficient for the Fe40Co40B20 layer with [alpha]-W, and I tentatively attribute these results to a significantly enhanced spin pumping effect in [alpha]-W, relative to that in [beta]-W. Magnetization measurements indicate that the two different types of Fe40Co40B20/W bilayers also have substantially different interfacial magnetic anisotropy coefficients.

Book excerpt: Magnetic and structural studies of sputter deposited Py(an alloys, Ni80Fe20) and [Py/Fe] thin films allowed for the characterization of their magnetization dynamics properties relevant for subsequent studies. Spin transport and structural studies of Ta in Py/Ta (single magnetic layer) and Py/Ta/[Py/Fe] (double magnetic layer) structures were performed by spin-pumping. It was found that in order to extract self-consistent spin-pumping parameters it is important to study both the single and double magnetic layer structures. Ferromagnetic resonance studies of Py/Pt/[Py/Fe] multilayers reveal interlayer exchange coupling of ferromagnetic nature. The coupling strength is interpreted by the proximity polarization of the Pt due to the neighboring ferromagnets. The coupled layers exhibit optical and acoustic modes of resonance which provide a very stringent test for the spin-pumping model. The induced magnetic damping of the two modes is found to be very well described by the spin-pumping model suggesting a communication of spin-current between the two magnetic layers. No significant spin memory loss contribution is observed. Lastly, the spin-pumping model is studied in a system in which the coupling is interrupted by a Au spacer layer: Py/Au/Pt/Co. It is found that spin-transport across the Au/Pt interface cannot be modeled by the continuity of chemical potential or the continuity of spin accumulation boundary conditions. A new model is presented which treats Pt as a partial spin-sink and results in good fit to all the data sets. Importantly, both the model and data suggest a large asymmetry in spin transport across the Au/Pt interface.

Book excerpt: Non-local clamping was investigated by Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) using ultrathin magnetic single and double layer structures prepared by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). The double layer structures show magnetic damping which is caused by spin transport across a normal metal spacer (N). In double layer structures a thin Fe layer, F1, was separated from a thick Fe layer, F2, by a Au(001) sparer. The interface magnetic anisotropies separated the FMR fields of F1 and F2 by a big margin allowing one to investigate FMR in F1 while F2 had a negligible angle of procession, and vice versa. The Fe films in magnetic double layers acquire non-local interface Gilbert damping. It will be shown that the precessing magnetic moments act as spin pumps and spin sinks. This concept was tested by investigating the FMR linewidth around an accidental crossover of the resonance fields for the layers F1 and F2. There is another possible mechanism for non-local damping which is based on a "breathing Fermi surface" of the spacer. The temperature dependence of the non-local damping indicates that this mechanism is weak in Au spacers. Surprisingly the Au spacer acts as an additional impedance for the spin pump mechanism. Finally it will be shown that electron-electron correlations in a Pd spacer can lead to a significant enhancement of the non-local damping.

The first part is devoted to deepening our understanding on magnetic damping of ferromagnetic metals, which is one of the long-standing issues in conventional spintronics that has not been completely understood. For a nonuniformly-magnetized ferromagnetic metal, we find that the damping is nonlocal and is enhanced as compared to that in the uniform case. It is therefore necessary to generalize the conventional Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation to include the additional damping. In a different vein, the decay mechanism of the uniform precession mode has been investigated. We point out the important role of spin-conserving electron-magnon interaction in the relaxation process by quantitatively examining its contribution to the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth. In the second part, a transport theory is developed for magnons which, in addition to conduction electrons, can also carry and propagate spin angular momentum via the magnon current. We demonstrate that the mutual conversion of magnon current and spin current may take place at magnetic interfaces. We also predict a novel magnon-mediated electric drag effect in a metal/magnetic-insulator/metal trilayer structure. This study may pave the way to the new area of insulator-based spintronics. In the third part of thesis, particular attention is paid to the influence the spin orbit coupling on both charge and spin transport. We theoretically investigate magnetotransport anisotropy and the conversion relations of spin and charge currents in various magnetic systems, and apply our results to interpret recent experiments.

Book excerpt: Magnetic properties of (111)-textured SAF/Cu/FL multilayer film structures were optimized by varying individual layer thickness and sputtering conditions. The SAF is a synthetic antiferromagnet consisting of Co/Ni multilayers coupled antiferromagnetically across a Ru spacer layer, and the FL is a free layer consisting of a single Co/Ni multilayer. The Co and Ni thicknesses were varied to obtain larger perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, saturation magnetization, damping and zero-frequency line broadening of the Co/Ni multilayers strongly depend on the number of bilayers. With increasing Cu seed-layer thickness, the texture of the Co/Ni multilayers improves while the grain size and film roughness increase. The increase in grain size results in the reduction of the direct exchange coupling between magnetic grains, which enhances the coercivity of the SAF and the FL. Experimentally measured coercivities of the SAF and FL are compared with calculations obtained from a coherent rotation model. The effect of the role of the Co/Cu interface in the magnetoresistance, is also discussed. Spin-transfer-torque induced switching is investigated in 200 nm diameter circularly shaped, perpendicular magnetized nanopillars. The SAF layer is used as a reference layer to minimize the dipolar field on the free layer. The use of Pt and Pd was avoided to lower the spin-orbit scattering in magnetic layers and intrinsic damping in the free layer, and therefore, reduce the critical current required for spin-transfer-torque switching. In zero magnetic field the critical current required to switch the free layer from the parallel to antiparallel (antiparallel to parallel) alignment is 5.2 mA (4.9 mA). Given the volume of the free layer, VFL = 1.01×10-22 m3, the switching efficiency, Ic/(VFL m0Hc), is 5.28×1020 A/Tm3, twice as efficient as any previously reported device with a similar structure. Variation in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of (111) textured Au/N×[Co/Ni]/Au films as a function of number of bilayer repeats N is studied. The experimental measurements show that the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Co/Ni multilayers first increases with N for N ≤ 10 and then moderately decreases for N> 10. The model we propose reveals that the decrease of the anisotropy for N 10 is predominantly due to the reduction in the magnetoelastic and magnetocrystalline anisotropies. A moderate decrease in the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy for N 10 is due to the reduction in the magnetocrystalline and the surface anisotropies.
