Book excerpt: Understanding crustal modification of magmas in volcanic arcs is a fundamental problem of igneous petrology and geochemistry. This dissertation examines the role of crustal processes including crustal assimilation, magma mixing, magma differentiation, and volatile transport in generating erupted magmas from four volcanic systems in the Kamchatka Volcanic arc: Bezymianny, Klyuchevskoy, Shiveluch, and Karymsky. High-precision Pb isotope data from the Central Kamchatka Depression (CKD) record lower crustal assimilation and magma mixing of less radiogenic crust and melt into the magmas of Bezymianny volcano. Unradiogenic Pb isotope compositions in CKD magmas suggest that lower crustal assimilation occurs to a larger extent beneath the CKD than in other segments of the Kamchatka arc. Klyuchevskoy compositional variations support this argument and also show that the degree of assimilation beneath an individual volcanic center may vary on a decadal timescale. Documented lower crustal assimilation by magmas beneath the CKD modifies uranium-series isotope disequilibrium compositions of CKD magmas. U-series isotopes are the only radioactive isotope system with half-lives useful for understanding the timing of volcanic processes. Constraining the affect of crustal processes that alter U-series compositions is essential to interpret isotope signatures. Chapter 2 of this dissertation shows that lower crustal assimilation and fractional crystallization of high-pressure clinopyroxene modifies U-excess to form Th-xcess compositions. Global documentation of Th-excess reveals a correlation of Th-excess disequilibria with hot lower crustal geologic settings. Th-excess may therefore be an important chemical tracer of lower crustal assimilation. Shallow magma storage and degassing is investigated using (210Pb)/(226Ra) compositions at periodically erupting volcanoes with well-constrained degassing and eruptive histories. Current models that predict (210Pb)/(226Ra) as a function of gas loss do not accurately predict the observed compositions of erupted products in Kamchatka. This paradox has important implications for the timescales of magma storage and degassing in the crust. Chapter 4 of this work is a detailed isotopic study of environmental uranium contamination from an abandoned open-pit mine. Uranium isotope data fingerprint alteration of the mine source and transport of uranium from the mine to sediment in Red Rock Creek on National Forest Service recreational land.

Book excerpt: Neogene volcanism associated with the subduction of the Farallon-Pacific spreading center and the transition from a subduction zone to a rift zone has been studied extensively in Baja, California, Mexico. One of the main goals of these studies was to find a geochemical correlation with slab windows that may have formed during that complicated transition. While workers have been able to find distinct geochemical signatures in samples from Baja California, none have shown statistically significant correlation with samples from southern California that are thought to be related to the same arc-rift transition events. All of the basaltic samples from this study of southern California rocks have prominent Nb depletions typical of island-arc subduction-related volcanism, in contrast to the chemistry of Baja California volcanics that have trace element patterns typical of synrift related volcanism. The work done by previous investigators has been additionally complicated due to each investigator's choice of important ratios or patterns, which bears little, if any, correlation with work done by others working in the same area. For example, some workers use K/Rb ratios in their study of the Puertocitos Volcanic Province, while others argue that Sr/Y vs. Y is a better indicator of petrogenetic processes. Little petrologic work has been done on Neogene volcanic rocks in the Imperial Valley and eastern San Diego County region of Southern California. This thesis combines new research with that of previous workers and attempts to establish a better understanding of the processes involved with the transition volcanism. Prior work documents significant differences in the geochemistry between some of these areas, especially those in close proximity to each other (e.g. the Volcanic Hills and Coyote Mountains). These differences were thought to be largely the result different magmatic sources. The potential of finding two differing magma types in close proximity could possibly reflect the opening of a slab window produced by the collision of the spreading center and continued subduction of the Farallon plate beneath the North American continent. However, evidence presented here suggests that crustal contamination and metasomatic processes in the Coyote Mountains are the primary source of the geochemical variations. Trace-element signatures are similar in samples from all of the study regions, with pronounced Nb depletion typical of island-arc volcanism. The distinguishing features of samples from the Coyote Mountains are the high amount of alteration and their high levels of K2O (4-5 wt%). This study will examine the possibility that these characteristics result from the interaction of the basalt with a highly alkaline body of water and/or sediments. Supporting data for such a model include pillow structures and spiracle formations within the basalt flows exposed in the Fossil Canyon and Butaca Canyon regions of the Coyote Mountains. Future studies of the olivine-basalt samples within the central region of the Coyote Mountains, away from the altered exposures, would provide a more complete understanding of their genesis. While the geochemical data were initially analyzed using standard geochemical techniques, the data are also analyzed statistically using a relatively new multivariate analysis technique known as Compositional Data Analysis (CoDA). Using the CoDA techniques, a clearer insight into the actual changes of the chemical composition can be seen. It also provides statistically valid correlation between the various regions in the study area. The CoDA processes, CLR BiPlots in particular, show which elements vary from one region to the next. It also differentiates elemental groups that correlate with typical rock-forming processes (e.g., fractional crystallization) from those that result from contamination from other sources or processes. Two examples illustrate the application: 1) In the Volcanic Hills, a pronounced negative correlation between MgO and K2O is clearly observed. However, in the Table Mountain samples, there is less negative correlation observed between those same oxides, but a pronounced lack of correlation between MgO and P2O5, which may indicate magma mixing. 2) Samples from the Volcanic Hills show two distinct groups with similar variance values and strong correlation, but are negatively correlated with each other. The first group consists of those the elements that comprise the minerals that crystalize at high temperatures, such as, Mg, Fe and Ca. This is consistent with the formation of olivine, pyroxene and Ca-rich plagioclase, respectively. The second group shows the elements that comprise the lower temperature minerals such as more Na-rich plagioclase and orthoclase. These include, Na, Al, K, and Si.

Book excerpt: Momotombo is a basaltic andesite stratovolcano in the Central American Volcanic Front, where the pre-eruptive processes have not been extensively documented in published literature. To constrain timing of key stages in the leadup to eruption and magma storage conditions, our petrologic study analyzes textures, phenocryst compositions and bulk-rock geochemistry of lava samples from 2015, 1905 and the centuries before 1905. All samples in this study are basaltic andesites with an exceptionally limited range of SiO2 content. Based on Spider Plot and REE similarities, Momotombo appears to draw from a long-lived source in the upper crust or mantle, and is characterized by high levels of slab-derived fluid contribution like other continental arc volcanoes. The crystal-rich magmas contain ~30-50% phenocrysts by thin section area, and their high crystal content makes them significantly more viscous than dry basalts. Crystal size distribution (CSD) is bimodal, as observed in other arc volcanic systems, consistent with the presence of two mixing magma populations or multiple phases of recharge. Plagioclase phenocrysts contain high An (>95%) cores, with variable oscillatory zoning in their rims -- suggesting temperature stratification in the magma reservoir shortly before eruption. CSD combined with homogeneity of bulk rock indicates rapid homogenization of the reservoir within decades to years before eruption, possibly by felsic and mafic mingling or assembly of the magma chamber from a trans crustal mush system. Our results highlight the importance of continual monitoring on Momotombo's slopes to detect magma movements on short timescales for timely forecasting of eruptions.

Book excerpt: The topography of volcanic arcs reflects a combination of magmatic ascent processes that deform the overlying crust, volcanic eruptions that blanket the surface in lava and ash, and geomorphic processes that shape these deposits into the observable landscape and consequently record an erosional archive of surface deformation. A central goal of geomorphology is to utilize the form of landscapes to infer the processes that shape them, yet comparatively little work has been done to quantitatively understand the geomorphology of volcanic landscapes. The Central Volcanic Zone of the South American Andes (CVZ, 15-28°S) represents an ideal location for understanding the processes that shape the surface of volcanic arcs; the arid climate and well-constrained geochronology of volcanic deposits provide a geomorphic archive going back 11 Myrs, and the wealth of available geophysical imaging data provides a high-resolution glimpse into the subsurface. In this thesis I utilize geormophic and geophysical data to explore fundamental questions in volcanic landscape evolution at varying spatial scales. To begin, I examine the isostatic uplift response to crustal intrusion of mantle-derived melt, resulting in growth of the largest known active magma reservoir on Earth (the Altiplano-Puna Magma Body). From topography I show that it is possible to calculate the contribution of mantle-derived melt to crustal thickening, and I compare these results to independent seismic estimates that agree well with our data. I then use the record of volcanic deposits from the Altiplano-Puna Magma Body to estimate the flux of mantle melt into the crust, and show that predicted uplift rates are comparable to the surface uplift associated with convective lithospheric removal. Next, I explore how the topography of individual volcanic systems can help discern the style of melt ascent from deeper crustal magma reservoirs to shallow ones. Using two actively deforming volcanoes in the CVZ, Uturuncu volcano and the Lazufre volcanic complex, I use river profiles, lake shorelines, and lava flow deflections to infer each volcano's surface deformation record into the geomorphic past. Uturuncu volcano shows little signs of permanent paleo-deformation, suggesting transient ascent of magma over millenial timescales, while Lazufre's long wavelength deformation suggests continued accumulation of magma since > 0.3 Ma. Finally, I utilize the unique topography of a windswept ignimbrite erupted from the Altiplano-Puna Magma body to better understand how wind abrasion can incise bedrock canyons, a fundamental geomorphic process in arid landscapes on both Earth and Mars. Using a natural experiment within the 4 Ma Puripicar ignimbrite on the western slope of the Central Andes, we quantify the relative contribution of wind and water erosion in propagating bedrock canyons and show that wind can incise canyons an order of magnitude faster than rivers, streamlining their profiles in the process. Thus, in these chapters I illustrate how geomorphology can be a useful tool for quantifying subsurface magmatic processes, while volcanic landscapes themselves can also provide unique opportunities for understanding fundamental planetary geomorphic processes not often observed elsewhere on Earth.
