Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a sophisticated new interdisciplinary interpretation of the formulation and evolution of African American religion and culture. Theophus Smith argues for the central importance of "conjure"--a magical means of transforming reality--in black spirituality and culture. Smith shows that the Bible, the sacred text of Western civilization, has in fact functioned as a magical formulary for African Americans. Going back to slave religion, and continuing in black folk practice and literature to the present day, the Bible has provided African Americans with ritual prescriptions for prophetically re-envisioning, and thereby transforming, their history and culture. In effect the Bible is a "conjure book" for prescribing cures and curses, and for invoking extraordinary and Divine powers to effect changes in the conditions of human existence--and to bring about justice and freedom. Biblical themes, symbols, and figures like Moses, the Exodus, the Promised Land, and the Suffering Servant, as deployed by African Americans, have crucially formed and reformed not only black culture, but American society as a whole. Smith examines not only the religious and political uses of conjure, but its influence on black aesthetics, in music, drama, folklore, and literature. The concept of conjure, he shows, is at the heart of an indigenous and still vital spirituality, with exciting implications for reformulating the next generation of black studies and black theology. Even more broadly, Smith proposes, "conjuring culture" can function as a new paradigm for understanding Western religious and cultural phenomena generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increase the power of your spells and rituals with these powerful potions from a variety of Western Traditions, including hard-to-find classic formulas with references to their origins provided wherever possible. This book is more than just a collection of over 300 formulas, but a guide to using beneficial astrological timing, incantations and other methods to super-charge your potions. It is an excellent reference for augmenting potions, making substitutions for ingredients or creating your own formulas for a wide variety of purposes. All of the formulas given here employ natural ingredients with the exception of old traditional potions from past centuries and those that call for food dyes as colorants. The author has, also, tried to choose ingredients or suggest substitutions in such cases that are safer and may be readily obtained. Why make your own potions when you can buy them off the shelf ready-made? When you purchase a ready-made potion, you have no way of knowing what's in it or under what conditions it was. On the other hand, you have a distinct advantage when you make your own formulas because you can ensure that they are made properly and you can customize them to your or your client's specific needs. Furthermore, many of the powerful formulas in this book cannot be found anywhere else. A long list of herbs and their attributes is provided so you can ensure that your potion has the most suitable ingredients for your particular purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Miguel De La Torre offers a fascinating guide to the history, beliefs, rituals, and culture of Santería — a religious tradition that, despite persecution, suppression, and its own secretive nature, has close to a million adherents in the United States alone. Santería is a religion with Afro-Cuban roots, rising out of the cultural clash between the Yoruba people of West Africa and the Spanish Catholics who brought them to the Americas as slaves. As a faith of the marginalized and persecuted, it gave oppressed men and women strength and the will to survive. With the exile of thousands of Cubans in the wake of Castro's revolution in 1959, Santería came to the United States, where it is gradually coming to be recognized as a legitimate faith tradition. Apart from vague suspicions that Santería's rituals include animal sacrifice and notions that it is a “syncretistic” form of Catholicism, most people in America's cultural and religious mainstream know very little about this rich faith tradition — in fact, many have never heard of it at all. De La Torre, who was reared in Santería, sets out in this book to provide a basic understanding of its inner workings. He clearly explains the particular worldview, myths, rituals, and practices of Santería, and he discusses what role the religion typically plays in the life of its practitioners as well as the cultural influence it continues to exert in Latin American communities today. In offering a balanced, informed survey of Santería from his unique “insider-outsider” perspective, De La Torre also provides insight into how Christianity and Santería can enter into dialogue — a dialogue that will challenge Christians to consider what this emerging faith tradition can teach them about their own. Enhanced with illustrations, tables, and a glossary, De La Torre's Santería sheds light on a religion all too often shrouded in mystery and misunderstanding.
