Book excerpt: This book was inspired by my desire to portray a tale of adventure in an African setting. A tale of courage, persistence and strength which is based on love for a community and motherland. Most of our experiences with such tales always comes in the Western context, but I wanted to bring in a different perspective showing the African angle.Magigo, the principal actor is a typical tribe's man who goes about his normal day to day activities until he was saddled with the daunting responsibility of going on a journey which many have failed to return from in the past.I hope this would inspire as many as possible to stay on the road of passion and persistence in whatever they are engaged in and pursue it to a positive conclusion. It is common for many to get discouraged by the dunes that nature places on their paths. It is very easy to give up when things appear too difficult, but the lesson here is that they should never give up on their visions and goals. They should always fight for what's right.
Download or read book Tibullus written by Michael C. J. Putnam and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of the Latin elegiac poet Tibullus (c. 55-19 b.c.) is characterized by an artful, witty "simplicity," and it relies on repetition, ambiguity, irony, and paradox for its effect. His poetry appealed to his countrymen in his own time, as it still does to students today, and this textbook is designed to explain and enhance that appeal. The commentary presented here is limited to the sixteen poems which comprise the first two books of the corpus Tibullianum, that is, to poems authentically by Tibullus. The notes focus on the needs of students approaching Latin elegy for the first time, but they will also prove useful to the more experienced student of Latin or to scholars in other languages. The editor has tried to balance matters of fact with occasional fresh interpretations. One introduction records what is known of the poet's life and discusses the rise of Latin elegy. The meter of the poems is explained, and Tibullus' style is examined.

Book excerpt: "What do globalization, the abortion debate, and the decision one makes about what to do about dinner have in common? This and other questions that arise from the necessity of individuals and groups to deal with the who, what, where, when and how of production, distribution, and consumption are addressed in this provocative and witty publication. Street- wise and jaded undergraduates will end up taking a fresh look at their everyday lives and the larger world they will someday manage. Casting aside the idea that "economic" deals only with things that can be measured with money, Smith encourages people to think not just about dollars but also about sense. The emphasis is on the sociocultural costs and benefits involved in making choices. Readers are challenged to rethink many of the usual ways of understanding such everyday concepts as property, capital, poverty and affluence, distribution and exchange, power and authority, rights and privileges versus duties and responsibilities, and even such issues as surplus and waste. Thoughtful people everywhere are asking whether future generations will bask in the sun of such technological innovations as the Internet, cloning and genetic modification, and medical breakthroughs--or live in the shadows cast by these same changes. One of the most important themes addressed is a range of ethical questions, not the least of which is how, when, and to whom future costs and benefits will be distributed."--Amazon.ca prod. desc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study transforms our understanding of Roman love elegy, an important and complex corpus of poetry that flourished in the late first century b.c.e. Sharon L. James reads key poems by Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid for the first time from the perspective of the woman to whom they are addressed—the docta puella, or learned girl, the poet's beloved. By interpreting the poetry not, as has always been done, from the stance of the elite male writers—as plaint and confession—but rather from the viewpoint of the women—thus as persuasion and attempted manipulation—James reveals strategies and substance that no one has listened for before.
Download or read book Tibullus: Elegies written by Tibullus and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tibullus's two books of elegies belong to the early part of the reign of Augustus (31-19 B.C.). His themes were love, the countryside and Rome, its gods and traditions. His patron was the great general and orator M. Valerius Messalla Corvinus. One of the four canonical Latin elegiac poets (Gallus, of whom almost nothing survives, Propertius and Ovid being the others), Tibullus has a distinctive voice and an individual approach to the conventional subject matter, bland on the surface but turbulent and passionate on deeper examination. His easy stylistic mastery cloaks vivid intellectual activity and turbulent emotion. This edition, revised in collaboration with Robert Maltby, includes for the first time the third book of the Corpus Tibullianum, a collection of poems by others within Messalla's circle, including the female elegist Sulpicia. Guy Lee's acclaimed verse translation, rhythmically subtle and lively in verbal texture, can be read with delight on its own and enhances our enjoyment and appreciation of Tibullus's Latin. Robert Maltby has provided for the third edition an extensive new commentary, illuminating many aspects of Tibullus' art and literary background.
