Book excerpt: Tony Bramwell's remarkable life with The Beatles began in a post-war Liverpool suburb where he was childhood friends with John, Paul and George. By the time he unexpectedly ran into George Harrison on top of a bus, Tony was well into a life story absolutely unlike any other. At Apple Record's insistence, Tony stayed with The Beatles for every step of their meteoric rise. His story has been sought for over thirty years, and here it is, detailing with an insider's shrewd eye the incomparable success and inevitable failure of the Apple empire; Brian Epstein's frolics; Ken Kessy's Merry Pranksters; Phil Spector's eccentric behaviour; as well as never-heard-before stories about Yoko Ono. 'Magical Mystery Tours' reveals fresh insights that have never been published in any of the 800 plus books already on the market, including compelling details of the early recordings and songwriting and Yoko's pursuit of John and her growing influence over The Beatles' lives. From the first number one to the last and from scraps of song lyrics to the discovery of the famous Mr Kite circus poster, this is a broad ranging account of the swinging sixties and the decade's most successful rock band.

Book Synopsis Phantasy - Land of the Beyond by : Just Dave
Download or read book Phantasy - Land of the Beyond written by Just Dave and published by Partridge Singapore. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern-day-fairy-tale fantasy novel partially based on facts set in the Singapore of the '80s with a sci-fi prologue and a fairy-tale opening. Self-explanatory, really (read it to find out). Written mainly in American English with a dash of Singlish, and sometimes, broken English (on purpose, of course!). Main character is Dave, a prince from the fantasy kingdom of Phantasy, who was left in the care of a childless couple, the Teos from Singapore, as a baby by his father, King Devonus, in order to save him from the evil clutches of a nefarious warlock called Secondras. Supporting characters include a royal palace guard dog-man called Musscus, the royal head steward Hootus, and of course, the main character's love interest who only appeared near the end of the story for a brief period only. There are a lot of made-up interesting names in this fantasy novel. It is a work of fiction after all. The readers will be able to identify with the characters as the story unfolds with plenty of interesting and unexpected moments. Started out as a lone fantasy book, but became apparent that it was part of a trilogy as I continued working on it. Guaranteed to make the reader laugh, hate, love, and weep as he or she follows and grows with the book to the end. Many ideas in this book are not found in most other books of the same genre. Unique and one-of-a-kind, really. Go on, read it, and find out more. I dare you to!
Book Synopsis Remaking Micronesia by : David L. Hanlon
Download or read book Remaking Micronesia written by David L. Hanlon and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's efforts at economic development in the Caroline, Mariana, and Marshall Islands proved to be about transforming in dramatic fashion people who occupied real estate deemed vital to American strategic concerns. Called "Micronesians," these island people were regarded as other, and their otherness came to be seen as incompatible with American interests. And so, underneath the liberal rhetoric that surrounded arguments, proposals, and programs for economic development was a deeper purpose. America's domination would be sustained by the remaking of these islands into places that had the look, feel, sound, speed, smell, and taste of America - had the many and varied plans actually succeeded. However, the gap between intent and effect holds a rich and deeply entangled history. Remaking Micronesia stands as an important, imaginative, much needed contribution to the study of Micronesia, American policy in the Pacific, and the larger debate about development. It will be an important source of insight and critique for scholars and students working at the intersection of history, culture, and power in the Pacific.

Book Synopsis Contested Landscapes by : Barbara Bender
Download or read book Contested Landscapes written by Barbara Bender and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscapes are not just backdrops to human action; people make them and are made by them. How people understand and engage with their material world depends upon particularities of time and place. These understandings are dynamic, variable, contradictory and open-ended. Landscapes are thus always evolving and are often volatile and contested. They are also always on the move - people may or may not be rooted, but they have 'legs'. From prehistoric times onwards people have travelled, but the process of people-on-the-move - as tourists, or on global business, as migrant workers or political or economic refugees - has vastly accelerated. How and why do people who share the same landscape have different and often violently opposed ways of understanding its significance? How do people-on-the-move make sense of the unfamiliar? How do they create a sense of place? How do they rework the memories of places left behind? There is nothing easeful about the landscapes discussed in this book, which are often harsh-edged and troubled both socially and politically. The contributors tackle contested notions of landscape to explain the key role it plays in creating identity and shaping human behaviour. This landmark study offers an important contribution towards an understanding of the complexity of landscape.

Download or read book TARDISbound written by Piers D. Britton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Doctor Who' has always thrived on multiplicty, unpredictability and transformation, it's worlds and characters kaleidoscopic and shifting, and 'Doctor Who"s complexity has grown. With its triumphant return to TV in 2005, it was made up of four different fictional forms, across three different media, with five actors simultaneously playing the eponymous hero. 'TARDISbound' is the first book to deal both with the TV series and with the 'audio adventures', original novels, and short story anthologies produced since the 1990s, engaging with the common elements of these different texts and with distinctive features of each. 'TARDISbound' places 'Doctor Who' under a variety of lenses, from examining the leading characteristics of these 'Doctor Who' texts, to issues of class, ethnicity and gender in relation to the Doctor(s), other TARDIS crew-members, and the non-human/inhuman beings they encounter. 'TARDISbound' also addresses major questions about the aesthetics and ethical implications of 'Doctor Who'.
Book Synopsis This Miraculous Life by : Robert Maoz Krinik
Download or read book This Miraculous Life written by Robert Maoz Krinik and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Maoz Krzisnik knew from an early age that if his life was to be worth living, it was to be an adventure. Traumatized by childhood experiences and suffocated at home and at high school, he ran away aged 17 to Africa and began a series of journeys of exploration that has taken him to six continents and countless dimensions of internal experience. Never content to be a bystander, inquiring constantly after deeper meaning, Robert has climbed every mountain and plunged into every abyss that has opened before him, neither fearlessly nor with the security of a back-up plan, but with beating heart and a passion that simply could not say 'no' to life. His reckless enthusiasm makes for a page-turning roller-coaster ride of a life story, packed with hilarious and improbable events, bizarre circumstances and unforgettable characters. Robert takes us with him through deeply personal experiences of shame and joy, fear and determination as he finds his way through military service and into work as a transpersonal psychotherapist. Personal healing, human relationships, love, marriage, parenthood, birth and death are all here and are described with candour, humour and vulnerability. Interwoven throughout is a unique interior journey in search of ever-deeper connection with spirit, from childhood glimpses of other realities and dramatic experiences with mind-expanding drugs to searching for a guru in India and ultimately to integration into his life today as an internationally recognised trainer.
