As Eva wades into life as the director of the Manor Arts and high priestess of the Witches of Arbor coven, her conflicted heart struggles to choose between two loves—the dashing mercurial Alexander and the alluring ethereal beauty Celeste. When Arbor’s affable new mayor hires an architecture firm run by a dangerously stunning mother-daughter duo with their own unique magic and an old score to settle to oversee the downtown’s reconstruction, chaos descends upon the vulnerable community, and the Witches of Arbor are once again called upon to protect those who spurn them. Yet jealousy, vengeance, and an unforeseen foe with a ravenous hunger for power brings Eva to her knees. With the aid of her familiar, coven, a few unexpected allies, and the magic within her, Eva must reconcile her heart and summon the power to rise again.
Download or read book Stolen Magic written by M.J. Putney and published by Pandamax Press. This book was released on with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author M.J. Putney's spellbinding new romantic fantasy will sweep you from Wales’s mysterious forests to the glittering menace of Georgian London–and into a shattering rendezvous with fate. Heir to an ancient title, Simon Malmain, the Earl of Falconer, is well known among the Guardians, humans with magical powers derived from nature. Well known, but not always well loved . . . for those who enforce the law are rarely embraced by those whom they protect–and this is equally true whether the law is magical or mundane. A routine mission to confront a rogue Guardian who has misused his powers turns disastrous when Simon’s quarry, Lord Drayton, captures his pursuer in a transformation spell that can only be released by Drayton–or death. Aid arrives in the form of Meg, a fey young woman who first traps Simon, then frees him. As they flee together, Simon recognizes that Meg is also a victim of Drayton’s evil enchantments, and he restores her nature and innate magic. Though her memory is still clouded, she is freed at last from a shadowy world of fear and lost identity. She agrees to help Simon bring down Drayton. The need for each other’s magic binds them together–and releases the more ancient magic of passion. But desire cannot be satisfied until the rogue mage is stopped. For Drayton has a diabolical plan that will profoundly alter the course of Britain’s future. Even the combined power of Simon and Meg may not be enough to stave off catastrophe. Only a desperate act of love may win back the future–or destroy all they hold dear. Praise for Stolen Magic: “A wondrously original tale... this is a haunting evening’s read.” —Romantic Times “Spellbinding... Putney’s skill as a historical romance novelist serves her well.” —Publishers Weekly “Blends romantic suspense with fantasy to produce a graceful tale of magical intrigue and the power of love to overcome evil. Book Synopsis Pagan Magic of the Northern Tradition by : Nigel Pennick
Download or read book Pagan Magic of the Northern Tradition written by Nigel Pennick and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical guide to the magical history, customs, and practices of pre-Christian Northern Europe • Details the everyday magic of the Northern Tradition, including household magic, protection spells, and the significance of the days of the week • Explores direct natural magic, such as shapeshifting and soul travel, and talismanic or sigil magic, including runes and rituals to unlock the power of crafted objects • Explains how many of these customs continue to the present day In the pre-Christian societies of Northern Europe, magic was embedded in the practical skills of everyday life. Everything in Nature was ensouled with an inner spirit, as was anything made by hand. People believed in magic because it worked and because it was part of the functionality of their day-to-day lives. Many of these practical observances and customs continue to the present day as rural traditions, folk customs, household magic, and celebrations of the high and holy days of the calendar. Exploring the magical pagan traditions of the people now called Celtic, Germanic, Scandinavian, Slavonic, and Baltic, Nigel Pennick examines the underlying principle of the Northern Tradition--the concept of Wyrd--and how it empowers the arts of operative magic, such as direct natural magic and talismanic or sigil magic. Through direct natural magic, individuals can shape shift, journey out of the body, or send one of their three souls (fylgia or “fetch”) ahead of them. Sigil magic involves the powers contained in objects, which can be channeled after the appropriate ritual. Runes are the most powerful sigils in the Northern Tradition and were used to ward off illness, danger, hostile magic, and malevolent spirits. Emphasizing the importance of the cycles of Nature to the tradition, Pennick explores the eightfold sun dials and the four ways the solar year is defined. He looks at the days of the week and their symbolic association with different deities as well as why particular acts are performed on certain days and what the customary lucky and unlucky days are. He also examines sacred spaces, household magic, protection spells, and the role of music in the Northern Tradition. Explaining all the traditional holidays and activities necessary to honor them, Pennick shows how anyone can participate authentically in the magic of the Northern Tradition if they take care to do things properly, with respect, and on the right day.

Download or read book Materia Magica written by Andrew Wilburn and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materia Magica approaches magic as a material endeavor, in which spoken spells, ritual actions, and physical objects all played vital roles in the performance of a rite. Through case studies drawing on objects excavated or discovered in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century at three Mediterranean sites, Andrew T. Wilburn identifies previously unknown forms of magic. He discovers evidence of the practice of magic in objects of ancient daily life, suggesting that individuals frequently turned to magic, particularly in times of crises. Studying the remains of spells enacted by practitioners, Wilburn examines the material remains of magical practice by identifying and placing them within their archaeological contexts. His method of connecting an analysis of the texts and inscriptions found on artifacts of magic with a close consideration of the physical form of these objects illuminates an exciting path toward new discoveries in the field.
Download or read book Germanic Magic written by Gunivortus Goos and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-09-27 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three parts of the book are separated fields and deal with different facets of the runes. Part 1 gives, among other things, a fair summarizing historical overview, whereby corresponding finds and their possible interpretations are not left out. Part 2 offers many passages in related mythology and the Norse sagas where runes occur, the corresponding quotes are included. These two parts form an important foundation for the third part, which deals with the use of runes in modern magical-practical usage. After decades of study of various western streams and schools of magic and a thorough study of the runes, the author has managed to combine both. The result is a unique modern rune magic, which is presented in the third part of the book.

Download or read book Magical Arts written by Time-Life Books and published by Time Life Medical. This book was released on 1990 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meticulously documented, vividly written, and filled with rare and unusual photographs, this volume examines the broad concept of magic and the practice of it. Magic can include different beliefs and activities such as outright sorcery or witchcraft, common superstitions, a calendrical system for determining lucky and unlucky days, folk healing, wedding customs, divination, fortune-telling, and voodoo (which many people embrace as a religion), although there is, in fact, no general agreement as to what it means. Serious magic includes what is called white, or good, magic, and black, or evil magic. The former is used to help people, the latter to harm them. These are further subdivided into additional categories: sympathetic or imitative magic and contagious magic and high or low music, examples of which and the many magicians who practice(d) these many forms of magical arts are extensively presented in this book.
Download or read book Occult Botany written by Paul Sédir and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Includes a dictionary of nearly 300 magical plants with descriptions of each plant’s scientific name, common names, elemental qualities, ruling planets, and zodiacal signatures, with commentary on medico-magical properties and uses • Explores methods of phytotherapy and plant magic, including the Paracelsian “transplantation of diseases,” ritual pacts with trees, the secret ingredients of witches’ ointments, and the composition of magical philters • Explains the occult secrets of phytogenesis, plant physiology, and plant physiognomy (classification of plants according to the doctrine of signatures) Merging the scientific discipline of botany with ancient, medieval, and Renaissance traditions of occult herbalism, this seminal guide was first published in French in 1902 as a textbook for students of Papus’s École hermétique and sparked a revival in the study of magical herbalism in early twentieth-century France. Author Paul Sédir, pseudonym of Yvon Le Loup (1871-1926), explains the occult secrets of phytogenesis (the esoteric origin and evolutionary development of the plant kingdom), plant physiology (the occult anatomy of plants), and plant physiognomy (classification of plants according to the doctrine of signatures). Unveiling the mysteries behind planetary and zodiacal attributions, he provides readers with the keys to make their own informed determinations of the astral properties of plants. Moving from theory into practice, Sédir explores various methods of phytotherapy and plant magic, including the Paracelsian “transplantation of diseases,” the secret ingredients of witches’ ointments, and the composition of magical philters. In the third section of the book, Sédir offers a dictionary of magical plants that covers nearly 300 plant species with descriptions of their astral signatures, occult properties, and medico-magical uses. Compiled from an array of rare sources and esoterica, this classic text includes a wealth of additional materials and supplemental charts and diagrams drawn from Sédir’s occult colleagues, all of whom adopted and expanded upon Sédir’s pioneering system of plant correspondences.

This book was released on 1888 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Origin and Growth of Religion: As Illustrated by the Religion of the Ancient Babylonians A word of apology is needed for the numerous repetitions in the following chapters, which are due to the fact that the chapters were written and delivered in the form of Lectures. I cannot guarantee the exactness of every word in the trans lations of the cuneiform texts given in them. The meaning of individual words may at times be more precisely defined by the discovery of fuller materials, even where it has been supposed that their signification has been fixed with certainty. The same fate has befallen the interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures, and is still more likely to befall a progressive study like Assyrian. Book Synopsis Sacred Gardens and Landscapes by : Michel Conan
Download or read book Sacred Gardens and Landscapes written by Michel Conan and published by Dumbarton Oaks. This book was released on 2007 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of rituals in sacred gardens and landscapes offer tantalizing insights into the significance of gardens and landscapes in the societies of India, ancient Greece, Pre-Columbian Mexico, medieval Japan, post-Renaissance Europe, and America. Sacred gardens and landscapes engaged their visitors into three specific modes of agency: as anterooms spurring encounters with the netherworld; as journeys through mystical lands; and as a means of establishing a sense of locality, metaphorically rooting the dweller's own identity in a well-defined part of the material world. Each section of this book is devoted to one of these forms of agency. Together the essays reveal a profound cultural significance of gardens previously overlooked by studies of garden styles.
Book Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of Magical Realism in the Twenty-First Century by : Richard Perez
Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Magical Realism in the Twenty-First Century written by Richard Perez and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Palgrave Handbook of Magical Realism in the Twenty-First Century examines magical realism in literatures from around the globe. Featuring twenty-seven essays written by leading scholars, this anthology argues that literary expressions of magical realism proliferate globally in the twenty-first century due to travel and migrations, the shrinking of time and space, and the growing encroachment of human life on nature. In this global context, magical realism addresses twenty-first-century politics, aesthetics, identity, and social/national formations where contact between and within cultures has exponentially increased, altering how communities and nations imagine themselves. This text assembles a group of critics throughout the world—the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia—who employ multiple theoretical approaches to examine the different ways magical realism in literature has transitioned to a global practice; thus, signaling a new stage in the history and development of the genre.
Book Synopsis Muthanna/Mirror Writing in Islamic Calligraphy by : Esra Akin-Kivanç
Download or read book Muthanna/Mirror Writing in Islamic Calligraphy written by Esra Akin-Kivanç and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muthanna, also known as mirror writing, is a compelling style of Islamic calligraphy composed of a source text and its mirror image placed symmetrically on a horizontal or vertical axis. This style elaborates on various scripts such as Kufic, naskh, and muhaqqaq through compositional arrangements, including doubling, superimposing, and stacking. Muthanna is found in diverse media, ranging from architecture, textiles, and tiles to paper, metalwork, and woodwork. Yet despite its centuries-old history and popularity in countries from Iran to Spain, scholarship on the form has remained limited and flawed. Muthanna / Mirror Writing in Islamic Calligraphy provides a comprehensive study of the text and its forms, beginning with an explanation of the visual principles and techniques used in its creation. Author Esra Akin-Kivanc explores muthanna's relationship to similar forms of writing in Judaic and Christian contexts, as well as the specifically Islamic contexts within which symmetrically mirrored compositions reached full fruition, were assigned new meanings, and transformed into more complex visual forms. Throughout, Akin-Kivanc imaginatively plays on the implicit relationship between subject and object in muthanna by examining the point of view of the artist, the viewer, and the work of art. In doing so, this study elaborates on the vital links between outward form and inner meaning in Islamic calligraphy.
