Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic conclusion to the inspirational family saga that has captivated millions of readers around the world! A New York Times, USA Today, and Publisher’s Weekly bestseller from the author of Redeeming Love. In the dramatic conclusion to the Marta’s Legacy series, the beloved author of Redeeming Love and The Masterpiece delivers a rich and deeply moving story about the silent sorrows that can tear a family apart and the grace and forgiveness that can heal even the deepest wounds. Marta’s granddaughter, Carolyn, comes of age during the turbulent sixties, struggling to navigate a tense family life. Though college offers a taste of freedom, tragedy shatters her confidence and she disappears into the heady counterculture of San Francisco. When she reemerges, more lost than ever, she reluctantly turns to her family to help her rebuild a life for herself and her own daughter, May Flower Dawn. But familiar tensions emerge when Dawn develops a closer bond with her grandmother than her own mother. As she seeks to avoid the mistakes of those who went before her, Dawn determines to become a bridge between the women in her family. Her Daughter’s Dream is the emotional final chapter of an unforgettable saga about the sacrifices mothers make for their daughters and the very nature of unconditional love. “Rivers has written another page-turner. . . . This heartfelt and sweeping saga is as ambitious as its central matriarch.” —Publishers Weekly “Engrossing and stunning. . . . The prose is elegant and life changing. . . . This sweeping family saga will touch both the heart and soul.” —Romantic Times

Book excerpt: My first attempt at writing was based on the fact that I had collected over the years about 500 quotations from Catholic spiritual authors and I selected about 20 of these which I classified as “Insights”. I printed them off in a hurry because I thought I was going to die in an impending operation. For a long time while preaching I had decided that to win a hearing from the congregation any discourse needs an arresting mother-idea or insight. On recovering, I thought I could make it into a decent-sized book by adding on some 20 meditations on the topics following the sequence I use for a retreat. This part constitutes Part Two of the present proposed book. The style of English corresponds, I suppose to what was current in the 1950’s. Although over the years I have tended to preach in a conversational way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bishop John Shaw was importing priests from Europe when he discerned the need for a seminary for the Diocese of San Antonio, TX. A locally-formed clergy was key to the support of the Catholic faith in the young diocese. Relying on five diocesan priests as faculty, Shaw dedicated St. Johns Seminary in 1915. A frontier, make-do attitude energized the first faculty as they taught and guided the seminarys first class who lived and studied in what had been the bishops residence. In its first century, St. Johns Assumption Seminary has trained nearly 800 priests for service in arch/dioceses across the US and foreign lands. With the guidance of arch/diocesan priests in the first 25 years, the Congregation of the Missions (Vincentians) in the second 25 years, and again directed by archdiocesan priests and a diverse faculty in the last 50 years, St. Johns Assumption has both struggled and thrived. Collaborating with Oblate School of Theology, St. Johns Assumption nationally-known for its pioneering bilingual-bicultural programs, stands on solid ground as it begins its second century. Shepherds in the Image of Christ chronicles 100 years of molding men and boys into priests for the Roman Catholic Church of Texas and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Los Angeles Latina woman living in poverty and hoping for miracles “comes to stunning and heartbreaking life” in this novel from an award-winning author (Newsday). On a hot, still day in May, Amalia Gómez sees—or thinks she sees—a large silver cross in the sky. Does this vision foretell a miracle? The pragmatic, twice-divorced Amalia is doubtful . . . Amalia’s neighborhood—a decaying area near a shabby part of Hollywood Boulevard—is under attack from gang wars and the police. Her live-in boyfriend is behaving suspiciously, her “fast” teenage daughter Gloria has become too much to handle, and her teenage son is hinting he’s in serious trouble. Most of all, Amalia is haunted by thoughts of her past and her first-born, dead in jail under mysterious circumstances. As the epiphanies and small omens of Amalia’s day build to a climax as wondrous as it is shattering, PEN Center USA’s Lifetime Achievement Award–winning author John Rechy takes us into the complicated life of a Chicano family living in Los Angeles—in all its spirited, gritty reality, giving us “a novel with more truth in it than a carload of best-sellers” (The Washington Post). “A fierce book . . . [told in] tough, uninhibited prose.” —Hartford Courant “A vivid and touching novel . . . Rough, heartbreaking . . . Rechy is masterful.” —San Antonio Express-News “A triumph, a sad, beautiful and loving book rooted in cultural experience as well as deep intuition.” —Newsday “[An] ardently feminist piece of writing. By portraying her abusive past, the poverty and the narrow choices facing Amalia G[ó]mez, Rechy illuminates the plight of certain minority women who remain locked in the dark ages of female emancipation, shut off from any help . . . Amalia G[ó]mez may be the main character, but poverty and ignorance, injustice and fear, are the real subjects of this engaging novel.”
