Book Synopsis Catholic Spectacle and Rome's Jews by : Emily Michelson
Download or read book Catholic Spectacle and Rome's Jews written by Emily Michelson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new investigation that shows how conversionary preaching to Jews was essential to the early modern Catholic Church and the Roman religious landscape Starting in the sixteenth century, Jews in Rome were forced, every Saturday, to attend a hostile sermon aimed at their conversion. Harshly policed, they were made to march en masse toward the sermon and sit through it, all the while scrutinized by local Christians, foreign visitors, and potential converts. In Catholic Spectacle and Rome’s Jews, Emily Michelson demonstrates how this display was vital to the development of early modern Catholicism. Drawing from a trove of overlooked manuscripts, Michelson reconstructs the dynamics of weekly forced preaching in Rome. As the Catholic Church began to embark on worldwide missions, sermons to Jews offered a unique opportunity to define and defend its new triumphalist, global outlook. They became a point of prestige in Rome. The city’s most important organizations invested in maintaining these spectacles, and foreign tourists eagerly attended them. The title of “Preacher to the Jews” could make a man’s career. The presence of Christian spectators, Roman and foreign, was integral to these sermons, and preachers played to the gallery. Conversionary sermons also provided an intellectual veneer to mask ongoing anti-Jewish aggressions. In response, Jews mounted a campaign of resistance, using any means available. Examining the history and content of sermons to Jews over two and a half centuries, Catholic Spectacle and Rome’s Jews argues that conversionary preaching to Jews played a fundamental role in forming early modern Catholic identity.
Book Synopsis Giotto the Painter. Volume 2: Works by : Michael Viktor Schwarz
Download or read book Giotto the Painter. Volume 2: Works written by Michael Viktor Schwarz and published by Böhlau Wien. This book was released on 2023-04-17 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paintings examined and contextualised in this volume are those secured for Giotto through early written sources. These sources also help to reconstruct the sequence of his works and artistic inventions as is plausible in the context of media culture in the decades around and after 1300: while Giotto was spiritually and intellectually formed in the sphere of the Florentine Dominicans, his artistic path began in Rome in the shadow of the Curia. The breakthrough to his own artistic concept came immediately before and during his work in Padua. In addition to prominent churchmen, ecclesiastical institutions, and the King of Naples, his clients were predominantly members of Italy's urban and financial elites. The adoption and further development of his inventions by other - especially Sienese - painters pressured him in his later years to try new approaches again.
Book Synopsis Music on Stage Volume 2 by : Luis Campos
Download or read book Music on Stage Volume 2 written by Luis Campos and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance by its very nature embraces many constituents, the theories of which have developed into discreet disciplines as on-going research deepens our understanding and knowledge of each one of them. Concomitantly, there continues to grow a greater interlinking, fusion and blurring of discreet boundaries between traditional genres – features highlighted in the seventeen papers presented here. Topics explored in this volume include: the intermedial performance of the Irrepressibles and electronically controlled sounds on the concert platform; the ways in which the physical body dictates movement and character and how the embodiment of the voice goes beyond character stereotypes; how Romeo Catellucci legitimized the audience’s gaze whilst staging brain-damaged patients; interculturalism in a new operatic work focusing on the current Israeli-Palestinian crisis; interrogating transgenerational depictions of Otherness in the Rocky Horror Show; musical speech in Iannis Xenakis’ reworking of ancient Greek in his Oresteia; genre conflation in terms of unaccompanied monodrama; trans-genre adaptation in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier and Philip Glass’s “Cocteau trilogy”; and textual and musical comedy in Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre, among others.

Book Synopsis Framing Mary by : Amy Singleton Adams
Download or read book Framing Mary written by Amy Singleton Adams and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the continued fascination with the Virgin Mary in modern and contemporary times, very little of the resulting scholarship on this topic extends to Russia. Russia's Mary, however, who is virtually unknown in the West, has long played a formative role in Russian society and culture. Framing Mary introduces readers to the cultural life of Mary from the seventeenth century to the post-Soviet era. It examines a broad spectrum of engagements among a variety of people—pilgrims and poets, clergy and laity, politicians and political activists—and the woman they knew as the Bogoroditsa. In this collection of well-integrated and illuminating essays, leading scholars of imperial, Soviet, and post-Soviet Russia trace Mary's irrepressible pull and inexhaustible promise from multiple disciplinary perspectives. Focusing in particular on the ways in which both visual and narrative images of Mary frame perceptions of Russian and Soviet space and inform discourse about women and motherhood, these essays explore Mary's rich and complex role in Russia's religion, philosophy, history, politics, literature, and art. Framing Mary will appeal to Russian studies scholars, historians, and general readers interested in religion and Russian culture.
Book Synopsis Black Madonna by : Courtney Hall Lee
Download or read book Black Madonna written by Courtney Hall Lee and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of the Virgin Mary comes loaded with baggage and preconceptions. She is usually depicted as the perfect, obedient, and highly esteemed woman, much like the Victorian notion of the “angel in the house.” For many black women, nothing could be more inaccessible. This book considers the relationship between African American women and Mary of Nazareth. After examining the history of black American motherhood during slavery and beyond, this book then gives an overview of the existing views of Mary in both the church and the academy. Lee then brings African American women and Mary together, creating a womanist Mariology by using womanist biblical and theological interpretation, as well as considering black motherhood during the age of “Black Lives Matter.”
