It discusses the disease of protean manifestations affecting all types of tissues and organs in the body. It addresses the different facet of the disease studied in isolation. Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease common around the world. Some of the topics covered in the book are the historical origin of different species of Brucella strain; epidemiological features of brucellosis; occupational hazards of working in the meat processing environment; identification and taxonomy of bacteria carrying the Brucella strain; and methods for the identification of cultures. The pathology and immunology of brucellosis in humans are fully covered. The histopathological aspects of the brucella organisms are discussed in detail. The text describes in depth the cardiovascular complications of the disease. The diagnosis of brucella thrombophlebitis is completely presented. A chapter is devoted to the respiratory and gastrointestinal manifestations of brucella organisms. The book can provide useful information to veterinarians, doctors, chemists, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Identification of Pathological Conditions in Human Skeletal Remains provides an integrated and comprehensive treatment of pathological conditions that affect the human skeleton. There is much that ancient skeletal remains can reveal to the modern orthopaedist, pathologist, forensic anthropologist, and radiologist about the skeletal manifestations of diseases that are rarely encountered in modern medical practice. Beautifully illustrated with over 1,100 photographs and drawings, this book provides essential text and materials on bone pathology, which will improve the diagnostic ability of those interested in human dry bone pathology. It also provides time depth to our understanding of the effect of disease on past human populations. Comprehensive review of skeletal diseases encountered in archeological human remains More than 1100 photographs and line drawings illustrating skeletal disease including both microscopic and gross features Based on extensive research on skeletal paleopathology in many countries for over 35 years Review of important theoretical issues in interpreting evidence of skeletal disease in archeological human populations

Book excerpt: A comprehensive textbook on tuberculosis that covers all aspects of the disease: epidemiology, microbiology, diagnosis, treatment, control and prevention. The main part of the book comprises very detailed and richly illustrated clinical chapters. The copious images are the advantage of this book. Chapters on new methods and treatments and on animal tuberculosis are included. The material is based on a wealth of experience in tuberculosis as seen in endemic countries such as Saudi Arabia that enjoy free access to advanced investigative and therapeutic facilities. This coexistence of endemicity of the disease and state-of-the-art facilities is rare in poor and developing countries or in rich and developed nations. This multidisciplinary volume is ideal for all clinicians, laboratory and research workers, epidemiologists, university teachers and students, health care planners and international organizations involved in world health and infectious disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brucellosis is a major zoonotic disease that may cause a serious illness in humans and animals. Global prevalence of human brucellosis remains significant. More than half a million new brucellosis cases from 100 countries are reported annually to the World Health Organization (WHO). The majority of these cases are reported in developing countries. In humans, brucellosis (undulant fever, Malta fever) is characterized by an acute bacteremic phase followed by a chronic stage that may extend over many years and may involve many tissues. It is a systemic disease, and many organ systems (nervous system, heart, skeletal system, bone marrow, etc.) may become involved following hematogenous dissemination. Although eradicated in some countries, it remains one of the most economically important zoonosis worldwide as it is responsible for huge economic losses as well as significant human morbidity in endemic areas. Because of the nonspecific clinical manifestations of human brucellosis and the need for prolonged combination therapy with antibiotics that are not routinely prescribed for other infectious diseases, laboratory confirmation of the diagnosis is of paramount importance for adequate patient management. In addition, evidence of brucellosis has serious public health implications because it discloses exposure to a contaminated source (infected animals or their products, unsafe laboratory practices, or a potential biological warfare attack). This book addresses human brucellosis with stress on symptoms including those related to the less recognized disease localizations, risk of exposure, treatment, and prevention. Light is shed on animal brucellosis as it pertains to human exposure. The book also emphasizes on laboratory procedures in culturing and serologic techniques. Epidemiologic surveillance is among this books subjects as well as veterinary control measures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zoonoses, diseases transmitted from animals to humans, hold immense global significance, impacting public health, economies, and ecosystems. Adopting the One Health approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, is crucial in tackling these challenges. Zoonotic diseases pose significant public health threats. Diseases like rabies, Ebola, and influenza have claimed countless lives worldwide. Without proper management, these diseases can rapidly escalate into pandemics, as seen with the COVID-19 pandemic, originating from a zoonotic transmission. The health of humans and animals are intricately linked, making collaborative efforts essential for disease prevention and control. Zoonoses have profound economic implications. Outbreaks can devastate agricultural sectors, leading to loss of livestock, reduced productivity, and trade restrictions. For instance, the 2001 foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the United Kingdom resulted in billions of dollars in economic losses. Addressing zoonoses through a One Health approach can safeguard livelihoods and ensure food security. Furthermore, zoonotic diseases impact biodiversity and ecosystems. Diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease can affect wildlife populations, disrupting ecosystems and biodiversity. Additionally, habitat destruction and wildlife trafficking increase the likelihood of zoonotic spillover events. We can mitigate these risks and preserve ecosystem integrity through conservation efforts and sustainable land-use practices. The global importance of zoonoses cannot be overstated. By embracing the One Health approach, we can address these complex challenges comprehensively. Collaboration between human and veterinary medicine, environmental science, and other disciplines is essential for effective disease surveillance, prevention, and control. By prioritizing the health of people, animals, and the environment, we can build a safer, healthier future for all.

Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive review of the most common infectious diseases that affect the nervous system. Written by international experts, it provides a guide to clinicians for accurately diagnosing and treating these challenging syndromes. Organized into six sections, the book presents didactic, up-to-date information on the following topics relating to central nervous system (CNS) infections: diagnosis and evaluation of the patient, bacterial, viral, fungal and mycobacterial infections, disorders of the spinal cord, and a myriad of miscellaneous infections. Chapters specifically reflect and look to resolve the common obstacles clinicians face in the field, such as having unknown etiologies on the majority of CNS infections, insensitive and slow microbiological techniques, an increasing number of immunosuppressed individuals with atypical presentations and pathogens, and a lack of standardized diagnostic algorithms. A complex yet accessible addition to the Current Clinical Neurology Series, Neurological Complications of Infectious Diseases invaluably examines a wide range of infections that have neurological complications and sequelae.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encephalitis means "inflammation of the brain," but it usually refers to brain inflammation caused by a virus. This severe and potentially life-threatening disease is rare. Encephalitis takes two forms, categorised by the two ways that viruses can infect the brain: Primary encephalitis. This occurs when a virus directly invades the brain and spinal cord. It can happen to people at any time of the year (sporadic encephalitis), or it can be part of an outbreak (epidemic encephalitis).* Secondary (post-infectious) encephalitis. This form occurs when a virus first infects another part of the body and secondarily enters the brain. The primary form of the disease is more serious, while the secondary form is more common. This new volume presents important research from around the globe.
