Book Synopsis The Made-Up State by : Benjamin Hegarty
Download or read book The Made-Up State written by Benjamin Hegarty and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Made-Up State, Benjamin Hegarty contends that warias, who compose one of Indonesia's trans feminine populations, have cultivated a distinctive way of captivating the affective, material, and spatial experiences of belonging to a modern public sphere. Combining historical and ethnographic research, Hegarty traces the participation of warias in visual and bodily technologies, ranging from psychiatry and medical transsexuality to photography and feminine beauty. The concept of development deployed by the modern Indonesian state relies on naturalizing the binary of "male" and "female." As historical brokers between gender as a technological system of classifying human difference and state citizenship, warias shaped the contours of modern selfhood even while being positioned as nonconforming within it. The Made-Up State illuminates warias as part of the social and technological format of state rule, which has given rise to new possibilities for seeing and being seen as a citizen in postcolonial Indonesia.

Draeger shows how the forms are related to their mainland cousins, provides a historical context for their development, and describes the combat methods of Menangkabau warriors, Alefuru headhunters and the Celates pirates. With over 400 illustrations, Weapons and Fighting Arts of Indonesia is an indispensable addition to any martial artist's library.

Book Synopsis Islamic Populism in Indonesia and the Middle East by : Vedi R. Hadiz
Download or read book Islamic Populism in Indonesia and the Middle East written by Vedi R. Hadiz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a novel approach to the field of Islamic politics, this provocative new study compares the evolution of Islamic populism in Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, to the Middle East. Utilising approaches from historical sociology and political economy, Vedi R. Hadiz argues that competing strands of Islamic politics can be understood as the product of contemporary struggles over power, material resources and the result of conflict across a variety of social and historical contexts. Drawing from detailed case studies across the Middle East and Southeast Asia, the book engages with broader theoretical questions about political change in the context of socio-economic transformations and presents an innovative, comparative framework to shed new light on the diverse trajectories of Islamic politics in the modern world.
