Book excerpt: The years of Macquarie's governorship from 1810 to 1821, were vital in Australia's national development. With the first hard struggle for survival over, the young colony was full of life and expanding in every way. It was an exciting time, rich in picturesque detail and incident, in human comedy and tragedy. It was the time when Sydney began to take shape, when commerce was born, when inland exploration extended settlement, and when the evolution of the Australian character and the Australian way of life began. Macquarie, the benevolent despot, played the leading ole in bringing order to the colony, in building up the emancipist class and fostering its talents, in holding at bay the privileged class that caused his downfall and his exile from his life work. Marjorie Barnard's lively and perceptive re-creation of the period is history at its most readable.

Book Synopsis Governor Macquarie by : Derek Parker
Download or read book Governor Macquarie written by Derek Parker and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first new biography of Lachlan Macquarie in decades, this book draws on a wealth of sources, both in Australia and overseas, to paint a picture of the man and his times. It must be seen as one of the great ironies of Australian history that as far as the British Government was concerned he failed in his duty as Governor of New South Wales - as was clearly documented to official minds in the official report compiled by Commissioner John Bigge. This report concluded that while Governor Macquarie had certainly supervised the building in New South Wales of some good roads and some handsome buildings (if at far too high a cost to the British taxpayers), under his government the colony had ceased to be what it was required to be: a place with a reputation for cruelty and hopelessness so terrifying that the very threat of being banished there would strike terror into the heart of any prospective malefactor. Macquarie had in fact had a vision shared by few others that New Holland had the potential to become `one of the greatest and most flourishing colonies belonging to the British Empire' - and became determined to do his part in steering the fledgling community in that direction.

Download or read book Clio’s Lives written by Doug Munro and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Including contributions from leading scholars in the field from both Australia and North America, this collection explores diverse approaches to writing the lives of historians and ways of assessing the importance of doing so. Beginning with the writing of autobiographies by historians, the volume then turns to biographical studies, both of historians whose writings were in some sense nation-defining and those who may be regarded as having had a major influence on defining the discipline of history. The final section explores elements of collective biography, linking these to the formation of historical networks. A concluding essay by Barbara Caine offers a critical appraisal of the study of historians’ biographies and autobiographies to date, and maps out likely new directions for future work. Clio’s Lives is a very good scholarly collection that advances the study of autobiography and biography within the writing of history itself, taking theoretical questions in significant new directions. The contributors are well known and highly respected in the history profession and write with an insight and intellectual energy that will ensure the book has considerable impact. They examine cutting-edge issues about the writing of history at the personal level through autobiography and biography in diverse and innovative ways. Together the writers have provided reflective chapters that will be widely read for their impressive theoretical advances as well as being inspirational for new entrants to the disciplinary area. — Patricia Grimshaw, University of Melbourne Clio’s Lives brings together a most interesting and varied cast of contributors. Its chapters contain sophisticated and well-penned ruminations on the uses of biography and autobiography among historians. These are clearly connected with the general themes of the volume. This delightfully mixed bag makes very good reading and, as well, will serve as a substantial contribution to the study of the biography and autobiography. — Eric Richards, Flinders University
Download or read book Upstream written by Dan Heath and published by Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wall Street Journal Bestseller New York Times bestselling author Dan Heath explores how to prevent problems before they happen, drawing on insights from hundreds of interviews with unconventional problem solvers. So often in life, we get stuck in a cycle of response. We put out fires. We deal with emergencies. We stay downstream, handling one problem after another, but we never make our way upstream to fix the systems that caused the problems. Cops chase robbers, doctors treat patients with chronic illnesses, and call-center reps address customer complaints. But many crimes, chronic illnesses, and customer complaints are preventable. So why do our efforts skew so heavily toward reaction rather than prevention? Upstream probes the psychological forces that push us downstream—including “problem blindness,” which can leave us oblivious to serious problems in our midst. And Heath introduces us to the thinkers who have overcome these obstacles and scored massive victories by switching to an upstream mindset. One online travel website prevented twenty million customer service calls every year by making some simple tweaks to its booking system. A major urban school district cut its dropout rate in half after it figured out that it could predict which students would drop out—as early as the ninth grade. A European nation almost eliminated teenage alcohol and drug abuse by deliberately changing the nation’s culture. And one EMS system accelerated the emergency-response time of its ambulances by using data to predict where 911 calls would emerge—and forward-deploying its ambulances to stand by in those areas. Upstream delivers practical solutions for preventing problems rather than reacting to them. How many problems in our lives and in society are we tolerating simply because we’ve forgotten that we can fix them?

Book Synopsis Unfinished Revolution by : Anne-Maree Whitaker
Download or read book Unfinished Revolution written by Anne-Maree Whitaker and published by Dr Anne-Maree Whitaker. This book was released on 1994 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "400 United Irishmen and fellow-rebels brought the spirit of Irish rebellion "down under" in the aftermath of the Irish Rebellion of 1798 - and changed Australia forever. At Castle Hill in 1804, this "army of shadows" carried on where they left off but during Bligh's overthrow in 1808, they stood back from a fight that was not theirs. The "political Irish" played a central role in the developing colony. Their professions, trades and skills made them useful as clerks, storekeepers and teachers, and fitted them to be overseers and constables, and helped bring self-sufficiency to the still-fragile colonial economy. They remained revolutionaries; only they negotiated change rather than raised warlike rebellion. Through their open defiance and quiet manipulation of authority, the harp "new strung" resonates to this day in the Australian ethos that United Irishmen helped to create." -- book cover.
Book Synopsis Financing the Colonial Economy 1800-1835 by : Gordon Beckett
Download or read book Financing the Colonial Economy 1800-1835 written by Gordon Beckett and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series explains the many important aspects of the colonial economy of N.S.W. between 1788 and 1835. In conjunction with the volume, guiding the economy, this study of financing the economy, provides a full and valuable insight into the formation of the NSW Treasury and its economic policies. The arrival of the Legislative Council changed the role and duties of the Governor in a major way. Instead of the autocratic governance previously experienced, there was now the need for compromise and the acceptance of guidance from an Appointed Council. The financial statements of the colony between 1802 and 1850 have been subjected to scrutiny for the first time and most interesting conclusions have been drawn concerning the performance of the colonial economy.
Book Synopsis The Coghlan Factor by : Gordon Beckett
Download or read book The Coghlan Factor written by Gordon Beckett and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second last volume in this twelve volume set describes and interprets the work of Timothy A. Coghlan. His best known work was the four-volume set of his 1918 published work, "Labour and Industry in Australia", based on his 'massive experience and research as administrator, commissioner and statistician'. Far from being solely a history of workers and their rights and entitlements, and the growth of industries, his tremendous study is a fine economic history of the colonies of Australia between 1788 and 1901. The publisher's note to the first edition describes Coghlan as being born at Sydney in 1855 and educated at Cleveland Boys' School at Redfern, (Sydney) After working in various woolstores, he joined the NSW Public Works Department in 1873, and from 1886 to 1905 was the NSW. Government Statistician and Registrar of Friendly Societies in that colony. In his senior role, he supervised the censuses of 1891, 1900 and 1901. The 1900 census was supervised for the new Federal Government, following federation. "He was the author of a great many reports and studies arising from his seat on many commissions of inquiry".

Book Synopsis More Than Words: The Making of the Macquarie Dictionary by : Pat Manser
Download or read book More Than Words: The Making of the Macquarie Dictionary written by Pat Manser and published by Macquarie. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Editorial Committee of the dictionary of Australian English, led by Arthur Delbridge, were adamant that their dictionary was to be descriptive. It was an important point of difference from traditional dictionary policy. This dictionary would give an account of Australian English as it was heard and written. We wanted it all: spoken, written, technical, polite, rude. The speech of labourers, the jargon of merchants, swearwords, Australianisms, as well as the basic core of English vocabulary.' The idea for a dictionary of Australian English was conceived in the 1960s, but it wasn't until 1981 that the first edition of the Macquarie Dictionary was published. More Than Words tells the story of how the dictionary was brought to life during this period -- from identifying the need for a genuinely Australian dictionary to the long road towards publication -- and explores how the dictionary has evolved over the years since then.
