Book excerpt: Story telling 'Anansisem' (meaning Anansi stories) has been a source of entertainment and also education for children in Ashanti for generations. Most of the stories were originally told orally and it was through the respect for tradition and the will to preserve the tradition and custom by the Ashantis that most of the children's stories survive today. In this collection of stories, there is a retelling of stories that have been told by parents and grandparents many years ago, to their children and grandchildren, most of whom are still alive. There may be additions here and there in an attempt to bring the gist of the story up to date and to help children of other nations to understand the stories better. Nevertheless, particular attention has been paid to maintaining the authenticity and integrity of an Ashanti folktale as told and known over the generations. The heroes in these tales are the animals of the forest, the Chiefs and people of villages, sometimes both are the heroes. The clever advice of the village doctor saved an unfortunate child being born by a selfish and callous woman in the 'Tale of Two Barren Women'; and a lesson is told in why we should leave things and creatures in their natural habitat in 'Trouble Seeks No man ... Man Seeks Trouble'; and there is also a lesson to be learned in 'Why Nephews Inherit in Ashanti'.
