Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: De Lingua Latina X has never been so courageously edited nor so daringly translated as in this long-awaited sequel to Taylor's Declinatio (SiHoLS 2). The editor's intimate familiarity with both the extant archetype and Varro's unique linguistic theory and practice make this volume indispensable for an understanding of LL X, one of the most important texts in the entire corpus of Latin grammatical writings. The stimulating Prolegomena introduce Varro, his revolutionary language science, book ten, and both the manuscript and the editorial traditions, and the Commentary explains in absorbing detail how and why the editor has set the text as he has. The world's foremost Varro scholar of this day has successfully combined classical philology and the history of linguistics to produce an inspired new edition and novel translation of book ten of Varro's magnum opus.

Book Synopsis Latin Grammarians on the Latin Accent by : Philomen Probert
Download or read book Latin Grammarians on the Latin Accent written by Philomen Probert and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin Grammarians on the Latin Accent offers a fresh perspective on a long-standing debate about the value of Latin grammarians writing about the Latin accent: should the information they give us be taken seriously, or should much of it be dismissed as copied mindlessly from Greek sources? This book focusses on understanding the Latin grammarians on their own terms: what they actually say about accents, and what they mean by it. Careful examination of Greek and Latin grammatical texts leads to a better understanding of the workings of Greek grammatical theory on prosody, and of its interpretation in the Latin grammatical tradition. It emerges that Latin grammarians took over from Greek grammarians a system of grammatical description that operated on two levels: an abstract level that we are not supposed to be able to hear, and the concrete level of audible speech. The two levels are linked by a system of rules. Some points of Greek thought on prosody were taken over onto the abstract level and not intended as statements about the actual sound of Latin, while other points were so intended. While this book largely sets aside the question whether the Latin grammarians tell us the truth about the Latin accent, focussing instead on understanding what they actually say, it begins to offer answers for those wishing to know when to 'believe' Latin grammarians in the traditional sense: the book shows which of their statements are intended - and which are not intended - as statements about the actual sound of Latin.

Download or read book Language and Authority in emDe Lingua Latinaem written by Diana Spencer and published by University of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diana Spencer, known for her scholarly focus on how ancient Romans conceptualized themselves as a people and how they responded to and helped shape the world they lived in, brings her expertise to an examination of the Roman scholar Varro and his treatise De Lingua Latina. This commentary on the origin and relationships of Latin words is an intriguing, but often puzzling, fragmentary work for classicists. Since Varro was engaged in defining how Romans saw themselves and how they talked about their world, Spencer reads along with Varro, following his themes and arcs, his poetic sparks, his political and cultural seams. Few scholars have accepted the challenge of tackling Varro and his work, and in this pioneering volume, Spencer provides a roadmap for considering these topics more thoroughly.

Book Synopsis Purity, Body, and Self in Early Rabbinic Literature by : Mira Balberg
Download or read book Purity, Body, and Self in Early Rabbinic Literature written by Mira Balberg and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which the early rabbis reshaped biblical laws of ritual purity and impurity and argues that the rabbisÕ new purity discourse generated a unique notion of a bodily self. Focusing on the Mishnah, a Palestinian legal codex compiled around the turn of the third century CE, Mira Balberg shows how the rabbis constructed the processes of contracting, conveying, and managing ritual impurity as ways of negotiating the relations between oneÕs self and oneÕs body and, more broadly, the relations between oneÕs self and oneÕs human and nonhuman environments. With their heightened emphasis on subjectivity, consciousness, and self-reflection, the rabbis reinvented biblically inherited language and practices in a way that resonated with central cultural concerns and intellectual commitments of the Greco-Roman Mediterranean world. Purity, Body, and Self in Early Rabbinic Literature adds a new dimension to the study of practices of self-making in antiquity by suggesting that not only philosophical exercises but also legal paradigms functioned as sites through which the self was shaped and improved.
