Book excerpt: While witnessing unprecedented increases in autism among young children, an internationally revered medical doctor finds his retirement troublesome. Dr. Jeremiah Trent is convinced that a mercury-based vaccine preservative, similar to one he helped create while a young university chemist, could be the catalyst behind a rampantly spreading malady that had no recorded history before 1945. Trent moves forward quickly, forming an unlikely alliance with irascible former U.S. Congressman Samuel L. Crockett who has an autistic grandson. Together, they unearth hidden agendas in the nation¿s capital that they are convinced are being orchestrated by outsiders seeking profits before safety. When Trent uncovers an incriminating internal drug company memo that supports his theory, his unsolved murder forces Crockett to turn to his daughter Elena, an attorney and the mother of his autistic grandson, to help him find the missing memo and finish what Trent started. As Elena develops a national grassroots autism awareness campaign, fueled in part by the heartwarming story of a young autistic savant with da Vinci-like skills, she witnesses a groundswell of support across the nation as her father continues his battles with the federal bureaucracy. With hidden barriers and roadblocks at every turn, father and daughter use the persistent setbacks as added fuel to continue their quest, battling inch by inch across a perpetual sea of heartbreak toward the bridge of justice. The world¿s children are waiting on the other side.
Book Synopsis Forgotten Labrador by : Cleophas Belvin
Download or read book Forgotten Labrador written by Cleophas Belvin and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forgotten Labrador recounts the history of a remarkable area of Canada - the Quebec part of the Labrador coast that extends eastward from Kegashka to Blanc Sablon. Cleophas Belvin describes the arrival of the Aboriginals and the activities of the Breton and Basque fishermen and French- and English-speaking merchants from Quebec City who controlled the region for more than one hundred and fifty years. He paints a vivid picture of the lifestyle and living conditions of the early French- and English-speaking pioneers and their descendants, offering an analysis of why they settled in the region and how they dealt with the precariousness of the seal, salmon, and cod fisheries. The Forgotten Labrador also explores the role of the Anglican and Catholic missionaries, the establishment of educational, medical, transportation, and communication services, and the various government and local initiatives that were undertaken to provide the people with some form of economic prosperity.

Book Synopsis Indigenist Critical Realism by : Gracelyn Smallwood
Download or read book Indigenist Critical Realism written by Gracelyn Smallwood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenist Critical Realism: Human Rights and First Australians’ Wellbeing consists of a defence of what is popularly known as the Human Rights Agenda in Indigenous Affairs in Australia. It begins with a consideration of the non-well-being of Indigenous Australians, then unfolding a personal narrative of the author Dr Gracelyn Smallwood's family. This narrative is designed not only to position the author in the book but also in its typicality to represent what has happened to so many Indigenous families in Australia. The book then moves to a critical engagement with dominant intellectual positions such as those advanced by commentators such as Noel Pearson, Peter Sutton, Gary Johns and Keith Windschuttle. The author argues that intellectuals such as these have to a great extent colonised what passes for common sense in mainstream Australia. This common sense straddles the domains of history, health and education and Dr Smallwood has chosen to follow her adversaries into all of these areas. This critique is anchored by a number of key philosophical concepts developed by the Critical Realist philosopher Roy Bhaskar. The book advances and analyses a number of case studies - some well-known, even notorious such as the Hindmarsh Island Affair (South Australia) and the Northern Territory Intervention; others like that of the author's late nephew Lyji Vaggs (Qld) and Aboriginal Elder May Dunne (Qld) much less so. Representing one of the first attempts to engage at a critical and intellectual level in this debate by an Indigenous activist, this book is essential reading for students and scholars interested in Critical Realism and colonialism.

Book Synopsis When London Calls by : Stephen Alomes
Download or read book When London Calls written by Stephen Alomes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-10-11 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of young Australians the tearful dockside farewell was a rite of passage as they boarded ships bound for London. For some the journey was an extended holiday, but for many actors, painters, musicians, writers and journalists, leaving Australia seemed to be the only path to personal and professional fulfilment. This book, first published in 2000, is a collective biography of those people who found themselves categorised as expatriates - people such as Leo McKern, Dame Joan Sutherland, Barry Tuckwell, Don Banks, Phillip Knightley, John Pilger, Peter Porter, Richard Neville, Jill Neville and 'megastars' Barry Humphries, Germaine Greer and Clive James. The book tells of choices they made about career and country, yet it is also a cultural history that traces shifts in the complex relationship between Australia and Britain, as the supposed colonial backwater began to develop its own cultural identity.
