Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding a salamander in the woodlands rates as one of the most enjoyable surprises of an early morning hike. Active mainly at night, these secretive, shiny, lizardlike amphibians often glow like jewels when found under the logs or rocks that many prefer. This colorful addition to Iowa’s popular series of laminated guides—the twenty-fifth in the series—will inform both amateur and professional naturalists about twenty-five species of salamanders found in the Upper Midwest states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, South Dakota, North Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri. Common mudpuppies and lesser sirens spend their entire lives in water, never losing the gills that they developed as larvae; the lungless four-toed salamander distracts predators by detaching its tail; the eastern newt discourages predators by secreting poisonous chemicals from its skin; the flat-bodied hellbender, which can reach twenty-nine inches in length, breathes by absorbing oxygen through the folds of its skin. These, plus the well-named slimy, zigzag, tiger, and other salamanders in this guide, are now threatened by loss of habitat, pollution, and a deadly fungus. Terry VanDeWalle provides a complete description of each species as well as distinguishing characteristics for twenty-one subspecies, from the striking orange and yellow spots of the spotted salamander to the lichenlike patches of the green salamander to the prominent rounded head of the mole salamander. He also includes information about the salamanders’ range and habitat preferences, from twilight zones of limestone caves and crevices to seepages and spring-fed bogs. His comparisons of similar species and his comprehensive key are most helpful for identifying individuals in the field. Superb photographs by Suzanne Collins make this new guide the perfect companion for outdoor expeditions in all kinds of moist environments.

Book excerpt: During the last half century, lungless salamanders (Family Plethodontidae) have been the subject of numerous studies in the fields of ecology and genetics. While most works have focused on the species-rich Eastern Highlands region, there has been a recent shift towards plethodontid assemblages within the Coastal Plain. The research presented herein applies hierarchical occupancy models and both mitochondrial and nuclear genes to address questions pertinent to the biology and conservation of plethodontids within the Gulf Coastal Plain. The results of a multi-species Bayesian single-season occupancy model indicated that two environmental gradients, upstream drainage area and stream drying, influenced the probability of occurrence for multiple species of stream-breeding plethodontids. Further, species varied in their responses to these gradients. A second model was used to ask whether asymmetric interactions also influenced occurrence for three species of brook salamanders (Genus Eurycea). More specifically, the model tested whether the southern two-lined salamander (E. cirrigera) might act as the dominant predator and or competitor to either the three-lined (E. guttolineata) or dwarf (E. quadridigitata) salamanders. The results of this second model suggested that environmental gradients likely work in tandem with negative interactions to shape the distribution of E. guttolienata within the Gulf Coastal Plain. Like hierarchical occupancy models, genetic tools are also shedding light on complex relationships among and within species of lungless salamanders. This research investigated phylogeographic patterns within a wide-ranging species of plethodontid, the spotted dusky salamander (Desmognathus conanti). Sequence data revealed that there were geographically discrete, deeply divergent mitochondrial lineages within D. conanti which may be the result of isolation brought about by fluctuating sea levels during the late Miocene through the Pleistocene. Data from six rapidly mutating microsatellite markers indicated that there had been recent gene flow across some of these lineages in the southern Gulf Coastal Plain. However, these data also suggest that a northern lineage may have remained distinct. The relationships described and occurrence probabilities estimated by the aforementioned models, in combination with conclusions from analyses of genetic data, improve our ability to conserve regional plethodontid biodiversity within this unique physiographic province.

Book excerpt: This document synthesizes existing information on the Sacramento Mountain salamander, a terrestrial amphibian endemic to three mountain ranges in southern New Mexico. The salamander is found in mixed-conifer forests primarily on USDA Forest Service lands, within and under decayed logs, and beneath rocks and litter. Because the salamander depends on a moist microhabitat, it is vulnerable to actions that directly or indirectly reduce the amount of moisture available to it. This assessment will assist land managers in making informed evaluatinos regarding consequences of management decisions and guide them toward a coordinated approach in the context of ecosystem management.
