Book Synopsis Lunar and Planetary Surface Conditions by : Nicholas A. Weil
Download or read book Lunar and Planetary Surface Conditions written by Nicholas A. Weil and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lunar and Planetary Surface Conditions considers the inferential knowledge concerning the surfaces of the Moon and the planetary companions in the Solar System. The information presented in this four-chapter book is based on remote observations and measurements from the vantage point of Earth and on the results obtained from accelerated space program of the United States and U.S.S.R. Chapter 1 presents the prevalent hypotheses on the origin and age of the Solar System, followed by a brief description of the methods and feasibility of information acquisition concerning lunar and planetary data, either from fixed terrestrial observatories or from instrumented or manned space probes. Chapter 2 reviews all conditions pertaining to the surface aspects of the closest celestial neighbor, the Moon. Sections in this chapter deal sequentially with the atmosphere, temperature conditions, subsurface stratification, field intensities (gravitational, electric, and magnetic), and lastly with the biological conditions existing on the lunar surface. This chapter also provides information on the density of the lunar atmosphere under quiescent or high-flux transient conditions, on the topography of the lunar surface, and on the probable proportion of crater-covered areas in the highlands and on the Maria. Chapter 3 is a detailed treatment of the surface conditions on the terrestrial planets, comprising Mercury, Venus, and Mars, while Chapter 4 deals with similar information relating to the so-called Jovian planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) and Pluto. This book will prove useful to lunar and planetary mission planners, both those concerned with the purely scientific aspects of surfaces and immediate subsurfaces, and those involved in the development of roving exploration vehicles.

Book Synopsis Structure of the Moon's Surface by : Gilbert Fielder
Download or read book Structure of the Moon's Surface written by Gilbert Fielder and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure of the Moon's Surface focuses on the importance of certain features of the Moon's surface that have frequently been disregarded in the past, largely because of lack of knowledge of them. Topics covered include the librations of the Moon; height determinations of the points on the lunar surface; luminous intensity and luminescence of the lunar rocks; the color of moonlight and composition of the Moon's surface; and the Moon's temperature and atmosphere. This book is comprised of 14 chapters and begins with a review of important physical problems associated with the Moon, including its motion and figure as well as the luminous intensity and luminescence of its rocks. The following chapters discuss the polarization of light reflected by the Moon; the problem of the Moon's atmosphere; the probable nature of the Moon's surface; and changes occurring on the Moon. The Moon's ray and grid systems, lattice patterns, rilles and faults, and distribution and frequency of craters are also considered. The final chapter is devoted to the origin of the Moon's surface. This monograph will be of use to both professional and amateur lunar astronomers.

Download or read book The Moon written by James Nasmyth and published by . This book was released on 1874 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nasmyth's wonderfully evocative representations of the lunar surface are the most realistic ever produced by earthbound observers. James Nasmyth was not only the inventor of the steam hammer, that great symbol of victorian engineering, but was also an enthusiastic astronomer. He built a series of increasingly powerful telescopes and won a prize medal at the Great Exhibition for his drawings of the lunar surface (he had inherited a talent for drawing from his father, the painter Alexander Nasmyth.) He then made models of the lunar surface, based on his observations and drawings and the prints in this book are from photographs of these models taken in bright sunlight. Besides the plates the book is important for the discussion of the origins of the moon's physical geography.
Book Synopsis New Views of the Moon by : Bradley L. Jolliff
Download or read book New Views of the Moon written by Bradley L. Jolliff and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 60 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry assesses the current state of knowledge of lunar geoscience, given the data sets provided by missions of the 1990's, and lists remaining key questions as well as new ones for future exploration to address. It documents how a planet or moon other than the world on which we live can be studied and understood in light of integrated suites of specific kinds of information. The Moon is the only body other than Earth for which we have material samples of known geologic context for study. This volume seeks to show how the different kinds of information gained about the Moon relate to each other and also to learn from this experience, thus allowing more efficient planning for the exploration of other worlds.
Book Synopsis The Lunar Surface Layer by : John W. Salisbury
Download or read book The Lunar Surface Layer written by John W. Salisbury and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lunar Surface Layer: Materials and Characteristics focuses on the characteristics, nature, and materials located in the lunar surface layer, including lunar soil mechanics, water vapor adsorption, and soil behavior. The selection first elaborates on soil mechanics considerations in the testing of lunar soil models, an experimental study in lunar soil mechanics, and gravity effects on soil behavior. Discussions focus on cohesion in lunar soils, gravity effect on dynamic shear strength of soils, porosity, soil bearing strength, lunar effects, soil cohesion in the lunar environment, gradation, structure and contact characteristics, and statics and dynamics. The book then examines the investigation of soil adhesion under high vacuum; water vapor adsorption behavior of kaolinite after high-vacuum storage; and sonic velocity and shear strength of possible lunar surface materials. Concerns cover shear strength, sonic velocity, experimental apparatus, and calibration. The manuscript takes a look at the consideration of properties of simulated lunar soil with possible stabilization techniques; feasibility of remote compositional mapping of the lunar surface; thermal emission characteristics of mineral dusts; and thermal properties of postulated lunar surface materials. The selection is highly recommended for researchers wanting to study the lunar surface layer.
