The hard part about being a Lummox is that the world is filled with stuff to trip on, knock over, and break. So to be a happy, hairy fellow means you smile with every smiley smile you've got. The story of Lummox encourages children to embrace and find treasure in the seemingly awkward and eccentric. Life with Lummox is written by Traci Vanderbush and delightfully illustrated by the love of her life, Bill Vanderbush. The rhythm and rhyme combined with jolly pictures will bring smiles and laughs to all who read. Perfect for reading to pre-schoolers. Early elementary students would also enjoying reading this delightful story. Adults of every age also find themselves smiling over Lummox.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert A. Heinlein is generally recognized as the most important American science fiction writer of the 20th century. This is the first detailed critical examination of his entire career. It is not a biography--that is being done in a two-volume work by William Patterson. Instead, this book looks at each piece of fiction (and a few pieces of sf-related nonfiction) that Heinlein wrote, chronologically by date of publication, in order to consider what each contributes to his overall accomplishment. The aim is to be fair, to look clearly at the strengths and weaknesses of the writings that have inspired generations of readers and writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lummox has been the pet of the Stuart family for generations. With eight legs, a thick hide and huge (and growing) size, Lummox is nobody's idea of man's best friend. Nevertheless, John Stuart XI, descendant of the starman who originally brought Lummox back to Earth from a distant planet, loves him. John isn't about to let the authorities take his pet away and, with his best friend Betty, determines to save Lummox even if it takes leaving the life he's known forever. However, what John and Betty don't realize is that the survival of the Earth itself may depend on the true nature of The Star Beast. An all-time great science fiction coming-of-age classic from seven-time Hugo winner and Dean of Science Fiction, Robert A. Heinlein. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her preface to Robert Walser's Selected Stories, Susan Sontag describes Walser as "a good-humored, sweet Beckett." The more common comparison is to "a comic Kafka." Both formulations effectively describe the reading experience in these stories: the reader is obviously in the presence of a mind-bending genius, but one characterized by a wry, buoyant voice, as apparently cheerful as it is disturbing. Walser is one of the twentieth century's great modern masters—revered by everyone from Walter Benjamin to Hermann Hesse to W. G. Sebald—and Selected Stories gives the fullest display of his talent. "He is most at home in the mode of short fiction," according to J. M. Coetzee in The New York Review of Books. The stories "show him at his dazzling best."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the conventional understandings of literary naturalism defined primarily through its male writers, Donna M. Campbell examines the ways in which American women writers wrote naturalistic fiction and redefined its principles for their own purposes. Bitter Tastes looks at examples from Edith Wharton, Kate Chopin, Willa Cather, Ellen Glasgow, and others and positions their work within the naturalistic canon that arose near the turn of the twentieth century. Campbell further places these women writers in a broader context by tracing their relationship to early film, which, like naturalism, claimed the ability to represent elemental social truths through a documentary method. Women had a significant presence in early film and constituted 40 percent of scenario writers--in many cases they also served as directors and producers. Campbell explores the features of naturalism that assumed special prominence in women's writing and early film and how the work of these early naturalists diverged from that of their male counterparts in important ways.

Book excerpt: Ripped directly from the pages of The Persimmon Pines Times, Golf Beat: A Year in the Life of Persimmon Pines provides a year's worth of electrifying articles exposing the day-to-day drama of Golf in a small town. Through the eyes of Staff Writer Brent Green, we get to go where few dare to tread. With incisive questions, dogged determination and the dumb luck of being in the right place at the right time, Mr. Green takes us on a roller coaster ride of emotion as we experience everything that happens on and off the course during a year in the life of Persimmon Pines. Author, Larry Caringer is a former PGA Club Professional, a successful Amateur Golfer, a Writer and a Morning Radio Humorist. His experience on both sides of the Pro Shop counter and at both ends of Golf's obsession scale make him uniquely qualified to poke fun at a sport that, quite often, takes itself a little too seriously.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Britain’s Downton Abbey and Dancing on the Edge to Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, the Jazz Age’s presence in recent popular culture has been striking and pervasive. This volume not only deepens the reader’s knowledge of this iconic period, but also provides a better understanding of its persistent presence “in our time.” Situating well-known Jazz Age writers such as Langston Hughes in new contexts while revealing the contributions of lesser-known figures such as Fannie Hurst, Looking Back at the Jazz Age brings together an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars who draw on a wide range of academic fields and critical methods: New Historicism, biography, philosophy, queer theory, psychoanalytical theory, geography, music theory, film studies, and urban studies. The volume includes provocative new readings of the flapper, an intricate examination of the intersections between literature and music, as well as some reflections on the twenty first century’s preoccupation with the Jazz Age. Building on recent scholarship and suggesting avenues for further research, this collection will be of interest to scholars and students in American literature, American history, American studies, cultural studies, and film studies.
