This book was released on 2001-10-08 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph de Maistre (1753B1821) was an extraordinarily gifted and insightful commentator on foundational developments that have shaped our modern world. His reaction to the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, though hostile, was remarkably open and included innovative and still-valuable theorizing about such human phenomena as violence and unreason. The political and theoretical issues he addressed continue to challenge us today. In Joseph de Maistre's Life, Thought, and Influence leading Maistre scholars offer interpretations of his thought and make available in English recent French scholarship on his life and work. They provide a portrait of Maistre as a significant thinker in numerous fields, upsetting the image of him as a backward-looking "reactionary," a reinterpretation furthered by contemporary interest in Counter-Enlightenment thought in general. Joseph de Maistre's Life, Thought, and Influence is a valuable resource, providing not only a cross-section of current Maistre scholarship but also notes and biographical suggestions for further study. Contributors include Owen Bradley (University of Tennessee), Jean-Louis Darcel (Université de Savoie), Jean Dinezet (former OECD director-general), Graeme Garrard (University of Wales), Richard A. Lebrun, Vera Miltchyna (Writer's Union, Moscow), Jean-Yves Pranchère (independent scholar), W. Jay Reedy (Bryant College), and Benjamin Thurston (D.Phil. candidate, Oxford).

This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts to ascertain the influence of enlightenment thought on state action, especially government reform, in the long eighteenth century have long provoked stimulating scholarly quarrels. Generations of historians have grappled with the elusive intersections of enlightenment and absolutism, of political ideas and government policy. In order to complement, expand and rejuvenate the debate which has so far concentrated largely on Northern, Central and Eastern Europe, this volume brings together historians of Southern Europe (broadly defined) and its ultramarine empires. Each chapter has been explicitly commissioned to engage with a common set of historiographical issues in order to reappraise specific aspects of 'enlightened absolutism' and 'enlightened reform' as paradigms for the study of Southern Europe and its Atlantic empires. In so doing it engages creatively with pressing issues in the current historical literature and suggests new directions for future research. No single historian, working alone, could write a history that did justice to the complex issues involved in studying the connection between enlightenment ideas and policy-making in Spanish America, Brazil, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. For this reason, this well-conceived, balanced volume, drawing on the expertise of a small, carefully-chosen cohort, offers an exciting investigation of this historical debate.

Book excerpt: Patrick Hunt s Alpine Archaeology is born out of more than a decade of widespread high altitude archaeological field research in the Alps. The observations in this research study were made over time in a number of different field seasons and therefore, gradually built up over the years. The author conducted this study while directing the Stanford Alpine Archaeological Project. Alpine archaeology is a specialized field where normal archaeological principles such as stratigraphy, pedology, data recording, anthropogenic features, materials analyses etc. apply but where contextual and climatic conditions are considerably unique. Higher altitudes and cold climate impact archaeological research and its practice in many different ways and influence the survival and preservation of both organic substances and metal objects as less oxidation and lower diffusion rates in the alpine environment noticeably inhibit the decomposition and corrosion of artifactual material. While observations in the first part of the book have been derived mostly from fieldwork in the Grand-St-Bernard region, those discussed in the second part are derived from the Stanford Alpine Archaeology Project s most important ongoing research, which is focused on attempting to trace Hannibal s route over the Alps in 218 BCE. Hunt completed his PhD in Archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology, University of London in 1991. He is on the Classics and Archaeology faculty at Stanford University, where he has been Director of the Stanford Alpine Archaeology Project since 1994. His Hannibal research is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, with a grant from their Expedition Council for 2007 2008. "
