Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The system of Gladonus is unlike any other. It is home to Creatures of Legend, all-powerful gods and goddesses, lost Ancients, reclusive First Bloods, and the Guardian of the Core. All life flows in and out of the system. Should it cease, the universe ceases to exist as well. That is why it is the Guardian’s duty to protect the system at all costs. However, his time is coming to a close and he needs to hold Trials to select his next apprentice. A haughty, yet competent prince, Hydro Paen, longs to seize the Power of the Guardian and show to everyone who has doubted him that he is worthy of his lineage. Under the guidance of his uncle, orphan Eirek Mourse participates, hoping only to survive such Trials and having no idea how he was even accepted in the first place. And a tactician, Zain Berrese, always living in the shadow of his stepbrother’s accomplishments, wants to prove that he is capable of overcoming his haunted past and excelling further than his rivals. None of these participants, however, know that the Trials will pit them against others who are just as conniving, talented, and motivated to win. None of them know that the Trials will test them in ways unimaginable. And none of them know that, by participating, it might mean the rendering of their identity and the forfeiting of their lives. With their lives and identities on the line, will one of these would-be heroes find the inner strength and wisdom to emerge a champion and impress the Guardian before the system collapses? A perfect sci-fantasy story for those who love Game of Thrones, Hunger Games, and Eragon. Buy today and experience the Trials for yourself!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in the northwest wilderness of Michigan during the lumberjack era makes an exciting and engaging story and who better to tell it than someone who actually lived there during this time. Mason Ray was a citizen in Leelanau County, Michigan from 1880 until 1922. She knew stalwart lumberjacks, the people that owned and ran the lumber mills, their neighbors, and the other strong-hearted citizens of the area and she describes them in her novel in vivid details. Her story follows the life of a man named Forrest Mann as he becomes part of the community and includes danger, deceit, intrigue, romance and love. The characters are believable and become like friends as the story unfolds. The local landmarks are real - the town (Agache is Glen Arbor on the shores of Lake Michigan); Muskrat Lake (is Glen Lake); the narrows bridge and the sand dunes. The language and terms are of that period (with a few tweaks).

Book excerpt: Short-listed for the 1978 Governor General’s Award for Non-Fiction The 19th century spawned a unique breed of men who took pride in their woodsmen skills and rough codes of conduct. They called themselves lumberers, shantymen, timber beasts, les bucherons – and, more recently, lumberjacks, working in the vast forests of eastern Canada and British Columbia. Across the country, farm boys would go to the woods, lumbering being the only winter work available. Immigrants – Swedes and Finns more often than not – resumed the trades they had learned so well in the forests of northern Europe. They broke the cold, hard monotony of camp life with songs, tall tales and card games. Within these pages, author Donald MacKay allows us a glimpse into that moment in our heritage when men entered the virgin forest to carve out an industry from the seemingly endless array of pine, spruce, maple and balsam fir found there.

Book excerpt: Each summer, men and women travel from all over the globe to the Lumberjack World Championships in Hayward, Wisconsin, to compete before thousands of spectators and prove who is the best at chopping and sawing wood, log rolling, and boom running. The event, with its impressive international fan base, has become the most prestigious timber sport gathering in the world. Timber! chronicles the history of the championships since its inception in 1960 and highlights such popular athletes as J.R. Salzman, Ron Hartill, and Peggy Halvorson, all of whom are stalwarts in a variety of events from the hot saw to the springboard chop. These glory-seeking competitors symbolize a connection to the old days of logging in Wisconsin and throughout the United States, when timber-felling helped build the country. Lively and informative, Timber! shows how these timber sports keep alive the spirit of the logging world and the image of the logger as a pioneer.

Book excerpt: For many, the 1970s evoke the Brady Bunch and the birth of disco. In this first, thematic popular history of the decade, David Frum argues that it was the 1970s, not the 1960s, that created modern America and altered the American personality forever. A society that had valued faith, self-reliance, self-sacrifice, and family loyalty evolved in little more than a decade into one characterized by superstition, self-interest, narcissism, and guilt. Frum examines this metamorphosis through the rise to cultural dominance of faddish psychology, astrology, drugs, religious cults, and consumer debt, and profiles such prominent players of the decade as Werner Erhard, Alex Comfort, and Jerry Brown. How We Got Here is lively and provocative reading.

Book excerpt: A deep and timely account of how American newspapers were produced and distributed on paper. Winner of the Best Book in Canadian Business History by the Canadian Business History Association Popular assessments of printed newspapers have become so grim that some have taken to calling them “dead tree media” as a way of invoking the medium’s imminent demise. There is a literal truth hidden in this dismissive expression: printed newspapers really are material goods made from trees. And, throughout the twentieth century, the overwhelming majority of trees cut down in the service of printing newspapers in the United States came from Canada. In Dead Tree Media, Michael Stamm reveals the international history of the commodity chains connecting Canadian trees and US readers. Drawing on newly available corporate documents and research in archives across North America, Stamm offers a sophisticated rethinking of the material history of the printed newspaper. Tracing its industrial production from the forest to the newsstand, he provides an account of the obscure and often hidden labor involved in this manufacturing process by showing how it was driven by not only publishers and journalists but also lumberjacks, paper mill workers, policymakers, chemists, and urban and regional planners. Stamm describes the 1911 shift in tariff policy that gave US publishers duty-free access to Canadian newsprint, providing a tremendous boost to Canadian paper manufacturers and a significant subsidy to American newspaper publishers. He also explains how Canada attracted massive American foreign investment in paper mills around the same time that US publishers were able to gain greater access to Canada’s vast spruce forests. Focusing particularly on the Chicago Tribune, Stamm provides a new history of the rise and fall of both the mass circulation printed newspaper and the particular kind of corporation in the newspaper business that had shaped many aspects of the cultural, political, and even physical landscape of North America. For those seeking to understand the travails of the contemporary newspaper business, Dead Tree Media is essential reading.
