Book Synopsis The Gospel According to Luke by : James R Edwards
Download or read book The Gospel According to Luke written by James R Edwards and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new Pillar commentary devotes attention throughout to the vocabulary, historical background, special themes, and narrative purpose that make the book of Luke unique among the four Gospels. Though the Gentile focus of Luke is often held to be primary, James Edwards counterbalances that by citing numerous evidences of Luke's overarching interest in depicting Jesus as the fulfillment of the providential work of God in the history of Israel, and he considers the possibility that Luke himself was a Jew. Edwards also draws out other important thematic issues in excursuses scattered throughout the commentary, including discussion of Luke's infancy narrative, the mission of Jesus as the way of salvation, and Luke's depiction of the universal scope of the gospel. This readable, relevant commentary attends to the linguistic, historical, literary, and theological elements of Luke that are essential to its meaning and considers Luke's significance for the church and the life of faith today.

Book Synopsis Sacramental Charity, Creditor Christology, and the Economy of Salvation in Luke's Gospel by : Anthony Giambrone
Download or read book Sacramental Charity, Creditor Christology, and the Economy of Salvation in Luke's Gospel written by Anthony Giambrone and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Anthony Giambrone investigates the appropriation and development of Jewish charity discourse in Luke's Gospel. In contrast to previous scholarship, neither the coherence of Lukan "wealth ethics" nor its contemporary actualization defines his study. Instead, the sacramental significance of almsgiving becomes the starting point for a more theologically oriented exegesis. The end result recognizes Luke's "Christological mutation" of the inherited tradition. The text is organized around three exegetical probes, each handling parabolic material: i.e. Luke 7:36-50, 10:25-37, and 16:1-31. The author advances an approach to these parables that highlights Christological allegory (metalepsis) as a Lukan narrative device. A break is thus implied with the dominant rationalist constructions of Luke's parabolic art and ethics. Also in contrast to a dominant trend, stress is laid upon Luke's Jewish rather than Greco-Roman context.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Salvation by : Timothy W. Reardon
Download or read book The Politics of Salvation written by Timothy W. Reardon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timothy W. Reardon uncovers thesalvation narrative developed within Luke-Acts and its key themes as they develop within the Lukan presentation of time and space, while being attentive to overcoming a facile compartmentalization of religion and politics. Reardon argues that Luke-Acts offers a complete, holistic, embodied, and theopolitical soteriology, cosmic in scope, that includes both the what and how of salvation. In contrast to recent arguments for some form of vicarious expiation in Luke-Acts, Reardon instead suggests that Luke-Acts' presentation of salvation - though exhibiting elements of multiple atonement models - noticeably takes a Christus Victor form, using Irenaeus's Christus Victorparadigm in particular as a point of comparison. Throughout this book, Reardon repeatedly demonstrates that Lukan soteriology is political, examining Jesus' role as herald of God's kingdom, the salvific space of heaven and the Church, and the mission of salvation. Reardon concludes that Luke-Acts is a theopolitical salvation unfolding in space, aiming toward the reconciliation of all things.

Book Synopsis Repentance and Forgiveness by : Matthew E. Burdette
Download or read book Repentance and Forgiveness written by Matthew E. Burdette and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reconciliation is at the heart of the Christian faith. It is what God accomplishes by the incarnation of his Son, by Jesus’ cross, resurrection, and exaltation: that all people be drawn to God in Christ, and, in being so drawn, drawn into fellowship with one another. The good news of reconciliation is, therefore, also a call to repent and to receive forgiveness, and then, concomitantly, to forgive. The present volume endeavors to reexamine these most fundamental Christian claims. These essays, which were first presented at the 2017 annual Pro Ecclesia conference, return to the biblical sources to help us understand reconciliation afresh. The authors raise questions about repentance and forgiveness from various perspectives: Jewish, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant. They also consider our present-day context, what has been called the “technoculture,” as well as the practice of repentance and forgiveness. With contributions by: Stephen Westerholm Ellen T.
