Book excerpt: Luis Meléndez (1715-1780) is today recognized as the premier still-life painter in eighteenth-century Spain, indeed one of the greatest in all of Europe. He is widely heralded for his virtuoso paintings of everyday objects rendered with exacting detail, marvelous effects of color and light, and subtle variations in texture. Featuring paintings from collections worldwide, this lavishly illustrated book showcases thirty-one still lifes by Meléndez, among them several previously unpublished works. Individual painting entries incorporate fascinating technical images along with close-up reproductions. Essays provide an overview of the artist's life and work, a discussion of period objects depicted in Meléndez's still lifes, and an explanation of technical discoveries. The book as a whole illuminates both the art history and technique behind an ingenious body of work. -- From publisher's description.

Download or read book Food in the Arts written by Harlan Walker and published by Oxford Symposium. This book was released on 1999 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A further volume in this series, this year discussing not so much food or its preparation as its portrayal in any number of art forms such as popular music, crime novels, film, theatre, literature, and fine art. There are also some papers which concentrate on the art of food, or art relating to food: an instance is the art of tissue-paper orange wrappers (a recondite but riveting item). My impression, when this subject was first mooted, was that all contributions would revolve around paintings and high arts. I was mistaken, there is a remarkable spread: the arrangement of 18th-century desserts; cookery and the Cuban Santeria religion; drink in 19th-century English fiction; food in film noir; the cook as artist in 18th-century England; architectural food design in France and Italy; popcorn poetry; food and eating in Bronte novels; and much more. These volumes are sometimes indigestible fricassees if swallowed at once, but think of them as platters of oysters - each may contain a pearl. By the finish a bracelet at least, perhaps a necklace, is the consequence.
Book Synopsis Baseball with a Latin Beat by : Peter C. Bjarkman
Download or read book Baseball with a Latin Beat written by Peter C. Bjarkman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Cuba's Esteban Bellan made his debut for the Troy Haymakers of the National Association in 1871, Latin Americans have played a large role in the major leagues. Nearly 15 percent of big league rosters are made up of Latinos, while the region's colorful and competitive winter leagues have been a proving ground for up-and-coming major league players and managers. Early Latin American stars were barred purely because of the color of their skin from playing in the major leagues. Players such as Jose Mendez and Martin Dihigo (the only player elected to the U.S., Cuban and Mexican halls of fame) made their marks on the Negro Leagues, turning the leagues' barnstorming tours into major attractions in many Caribbean countries. This history of the players and events that make up the rich tradition of Latin American baseball gives a unique insight to this long-neglected area of baseball.

Book excerpt: The guiding principle of this title is that the 'sister arts' of painting and poetry are mutually illuminating, their common currency being the visual image. Five masters - El Greco, Velazquez, Goya, Picasso and Dali - are discussed, with a view to distinguishing what is peculiarly Spanish in their way of looking at reality.

Book excerpt: "Excellent balance of case excerpts and author explanation, highly appropriate for undergraduate students." —Dr. Wendy Brame, Briar Cliff University Political factors influence judicial decisions. Arguments and input from lawyers and interest groups, the ebb and flow of public opinion, and especially the ideological and behavioral inclinations of the justices all combine to shape the development of constitutional doctrine. With meticulous revising, the authors streamline material while accounting for recent landmark cases and new scholarship. Ideal for a one semester course, the Eighth Edition of A Short Course offers all the hallmarks of the Rights and Powers volumes in a more condensed format. Students and instructors benefit from the online Con Law Resource Center which houses the supplemental case archive, links to CQ Press reference materials, a moot court simulation, instructor resources, and more.
