Narrating the conflict within self, surroundings, and imagination, it captures the symbolism expressed by René Descartes through his words “I think therefore I am”. The story takes the reader on a surreal journey of sustainability by weaving a complex yet beautiful tapestry of human mind, relationships, and environment. Lucy boards a train after drinking a magic potion. But she is destined for the journey even before her birth. Every compartment poses a new challenge and an impending threat to the survival of life on Earth. Life is possible, only if she successfully reaches the first compartment and overcomes her nemesis. In this journey, Lucy has to surpass innumerable obstacles and when she finally meets...it is for her to decide the future of humanity! Lucy's father is touchy because he's worried about her mother, who's expecting a baby any day. The year is 1843 and the Stewart family is emigrating to Oregon by wagon train. And Finn, Lucy's frisky fox terrier, just can't seem to stay out of mischief. One day when the wagons break camp to move on, Finn is nowhere to be found. Lucy knows her father will be angry, but she can't help that. She simply has to sneak away from the wagon train and search for her missing puppy. Carla Stevens' story is based on actual journals of the pioneers' journey to Oregon. The text combines with Ronald Himler's striking illustrations to evoke an exciting time in American history. What interested her most was already there among the mountain people--the ancient arts of hand-weaving and vegetable dyeing. Her campaign to revive interest in these native crafts has resulted in the internationally respected Penland School of Handicrafts. Originally published in 1971. Book excerpt: A perfectly pitched bedtime story and counting book for sleepy train lovers, illustrated in dramatic 3D sculptures! A little boy climbs into bed with a book and starts counting the train cars in it, between the engine and caboose. "Ten sleepy cars going clickety-clack," reads the refrain. But as the boy counts cars and gets sleepier and sleepier, his room looks more and more like one of the train cars from his book--the sleeping car, of course! Rhythmically told by the author of the Froggy books, Sleep Train is also stunning to look at. 3D illustrator, Lauren Eldridge, has sculpted an entire train full of intricate details. Part bedtime story, part counting book, part children's fantasy, Sleep Train is a magical ride to dreamland.
