Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Take and read." Saint Augustine thought he heard those words as he debated whether to follow Christ or continue his old way of life? He obeyed, read the Bible, and his life was transformed. Adolphe Monod (1802-1856) gives the same advice to readers of Lucile. Take and read. --- Yes, but is the Bible true? Is it really God's Word to his people? Can we read it ourselves and understand it without going astray? These are the questions that troubled Lucile as she sought to find peace with God and with herself. If you have ever wondered about these issues, you will find Lucile, Take and Read to be a charming but well-reasoned source of help. If you already love, trust, and read God's Word, this book will both challenge and strengthen your faith. --- Set and written in mid-nineteenth century France, Lucile is a fictional account of real events told in the form of dialogues and letters. The first part of the book is a carefully reasoned defense of the Bible's authenticity and authority as God's Word to his people. Once convinced of this by a godly abbot, Lucile eagerly desires to read the Bible for herself, but the abbot tells her that she must look to the Roman Catholic Church to tell her what parts she can read and to explain their meaning. She is dismayed but timid. Then a family friend who has become a new person through reading the Bible comes to her aid and finally convinces her that God not only permits but commands his people to read the Bible while praying for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. --- Lucile was enormously popular when first published in 1841, and it remained so for over forty years. It was translated from French into English and at least seven other languages. This edition represents a new translation and editing of this classic work so that it reads more naturally to twenty-first century readers. Despite its age, the issues addressed are still with us today, as relativism and skepticism abound. Therefore, follow Monod's advice. Once you leave this book, find yourself a Bible, then "take and read."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judy Gaman was so busy making a name for herself that she barely took the time to meet a stranger, enjoy life, or simply stop to breathe. Immersed in her job as the director of business development for a high-profile medical practice—a job that required her to write health and wellness books and host a nationally syndicated radio show—she spent every day going full speed ahead with no looking back. That is, until the day she met Lucille Fleming. While writing a book on longevity, Judy interviewed Lucille, an elegant and spirited woman who had just recently turned 100. Lucille had the fashion and style of old Hollywood, but it was all hidden behind the doors of her assisted living center. What began as a quick meeting became a lasting friendship that transformed into an inseparable bond. Lucille brought incredible wisdom and great stories to the table, while Judy provided an avenue for excitement and new opportunities. Together, the two began living life to the fullest, and meeting the most interesting people along the way (including Suzanne Somers). But then Lucille’s life came to an end through unexpected and unfortunate circumstances—and the very first lesson she ever taught Judy proved to be the most important one of all.

Book excerpt: Engaged? Soon-to-Be Engaged? Or Just Thinking about Building a Healthy, Vibrant, Godly Life Together as Husband and Wife? . . . Marriage is not for the faint of heart. Men, look at Ephesians 5:28: “So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.” Men, are you ready to make a commitment such as this? Ladies, are you ready to hop on his train? Consider Ephesians 5:22: “Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” How are you both going to work out that verse as a couple? Anyone fighting yet? From Me to We is a transparent, surprisingly honest, and widely informative guide that will inspire readers to safeguard their marriage by tackling tough questions and issues before they say, “I do.” Lucille Williams, pastor's wife and trained Prepare/Enrich Marriage Facilitator, offers straight-talk about marriage with unprecedented insight as well as challenges and discussion questions—a must-have tool for premarital counseling. This compelling, entertaining, and insightful guide covers topics including the all-important question of Why are you getting married? as well as forgiveness, communication, expectations for marriage, baggage, sex, and money—all from a biblical perspective.

Book excerpt: Even as a child, Suzanne Berne understood the source of her father’s terrible melancholy: he’d lost his mother when he was a little boy. Decades later, with her father now elderly and ailing, she decides to try to uncover the woman who continues to haunt him. Every family has a missing person, someone who died young or disappeared, leaving a legacy of loss. Aided by vintage photographs and a box of old keepsakes, Berne sets out to fill in her grandmother’s silhouette and along the way uncovers her own foothold in American history. Lucile Berne, née Kroger, was a daughter of Bernard Henry Kroger, the archetypal American self-made man, who at twenty-three established what is today’s $76 billion grocery enterprise. From her turn-of-the-century Cincinnati childhood to her college years at Wellesley, her tenure as treasurer of her father’s huge company, her stint as a relief worker in devastated France, her marriage to a professional singer, and the elusive, unhappy wealthy young matron she became, Lucile both illustrates and contradicts her times. In the process of creating this portrait, Berne discovers the function of family history: “to explain what is essentially inexplicable—how we came to be ourselves.”

Book excerpt: A history of mystic resistance and liberation and of five women who transcended the expected to transform America. For centuries, women who emerge as mystic leaders have played vital roles in American culture. For just as long, they've been subjugated and ridiculed. Today, women and others across the nation are once again turning to their mystic powers to #HexThePatriarchy and help fight the forces that seem bent on relegating them to second-class citizenry. Amid this tumult, Lucile Scott looks to the past and the stories of five women over three centuries to form an ancestral spiritual coven: Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans; Cora L. V. Scott, nineteenth-century Spiritualist superstar; Helena Blavatsky, mother of Theosophy; Zsuzsanna Budapest, feminist witch and founder of Dianic Wicca; and Marianne Williamson, presidential candidate and preacher of the New Age Gospel of Love. Each, in their own ways, defied masculine preconceptions about power. A scathing queer feminist history and a personal quest for transcendence, An American COVENant opens our eyes to the paths forged by women who inspired the nation in their own times--and who will no longer be forgotten or silenced in ours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on publisher and editor Lucile H. Bluford examines her journalistic writings on social, economic, and political issues; her strong opinionated views on African Americans and women; and whether there were consistent themes, biases, and assumptions in her stories that may have influenced news coverage in the Kansas City Call. It traces the beginnings of her activism as a young reporter seeking admission to the graduate program in journalism at the University of Missouri and how her admissions rejection became the catalyst for her seven-decade career as a champion of racial and gender equality. Bluford’s work at the Kansas City Call demonstrates how critical theorists used storytelling to describe personal experiences of struggle and oppression to inform the public of racial and gender consciousness. Lucile H. Bluford and the Kansas City Call illustrates how she used her social authority in the formidable power base of the weekly Black newspaper she owned, shaping and mobilizing a broader movement in the fight for freedom and social justice. This book focuses on a selection of Bluford’s news stories and editorials from 1968 to 1983 as examples of how she articulated a Black feminist standpoint advocating a Black liberation agenda—equal access to decent jobs, affordable health care and housing, and a better education in Kansas City, Missouri. Bluford’s writings represented what the mainstream news ignored, exposing injustices and inequalities in the African American community and among feminists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This widely acclaimed book analyzes the political effects of scientific research as exemplified by one field, economic botany, during one epoch, the nineteenth century, when Great Britain was the world's most powerful nation. Lucile Brockway examines how the British botanic garden network developed and transferred economically important plants to different parts of the world to promote the prosperity of the Empire. In this classic work, available once again after many years out of print, Brockway examines in detail three cases in which British scientists transferred important crop plants--cinchona (a source of quinine), rubber and sisal--to new continents. Weaving together botanical, historical, economic, political, and ethnographic findings, the author illuminates the remarkable social role of botany and the entwined relation between science and politics in an imperial era.
