Book excerpt: No Victory Comes Without Sacrifice. Lucid has hit the streets. It's a new drug that allows its user the ability to sense and control other people's bodies... and things are about to get ugly. After traveling the world with the genetically-engineered members of The Designed, Raleigh returns home to the United States having found both her confidence and her ability to induce Lucid in others. A war is brewing, and with Designed on both sides, neither has the advantage. Out of options and in desperate need of allies, Raleigh and her friends are forced to side with Grant and Able, the pharmaceutical company responsible for creating The Designed in the first place. It's an uneasy alliance, complicated further by her reluctance to accept the corporate giant's vision for Lucid. Does this dangerous substance really have a place in the world? Do The Designed? Does she? With the final showdown looming, Raleigh must put these thoughts aside as she struggles to come to terms with her own growing powers and the very real possibility that she'll have to kill Sigma, the leader of the opposition. Is willing to compromise her morals in order to win the day and save her friends and family? Or will she falter when the decisive moment arrives?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conjectures and Refutations is one of Karl Popper's most wide-ranging and popular works, notable not only for its acute insight into the way scientific knowledge grows, but also for applying those insights to politics and to history. It provides one of the clearest and most accessible statements of the fundamental idea that guided his work: not only our knowledge, but our aims and our standards, grow through an unending process of trial and error.

Book Synopsis Paul and the Law by : Heikki Räisänen
Download or read book Paul and the Law written by Heikki Räisänen and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 1987 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tensions and self-contradictions in Paul's statements on the Torah are analysed in this book in detail, which also critically discusses a vast body of scholarly literature on the subject. The contradictions in Paul cannot be explained away, neither by dialectical interpretive devices nor by way of development theories. Rather, they must be taken seriously as real contradictions and as pointers to Paul's unsolved theological problems. Different statements owe their origin largely to different needs, mostly polemical ones, arising in changing situations. "Anyone who has studied Paul knows that probably the most complex problem he develops is his view of the law and its purpose. The beauty of Räisänen's work is that he recognizes and respects this complexity without himself becoming too dense to understand. R. finds that Paul's radicalized, negative criticism of the law is peculiar to him, unparalleled in the NT and without precedent in Jewish thought. With careful, patient examination of various contexts, R. leads his readers to see that Paul has an oscillating, even inconsistent view of the law. [...] This book is well-written in clear, readable English. It is an important book, recommended to any serious student of Paul. Its strength is in R.'s willingness to abandon preconceptions of what Paul's view on the law should be according to some consistent plan and in allowing Paul to speak for himself." Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Pauline Studies by : Matthew V. Novenson
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Pauline Studies written by Matthew V. Novenson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-08 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Pauline Studies brings together a diverse international group of experts on the apostle Paul. It examines the authentic texts from his own hand, other ancient texts falsely attributed to him, the numerous early Christian legends about him, and the many meanings that have been and still are made of these texts to give a twenty-first century snapshot of Pauline Studies. Divided into five key sections, the Handbook begins by examining Paul the person - a largely biographical sketching of the life of Paul himself to the limited extent that it is possible to do so. It moves on to explore Paul in context and Pauline Literature, looking in detail at the letters, manuscripts, and canons that constitute most of our extant evidence for the apostle. Part Four uses a number of classic motifs to describe what modern experts describe as 'Pauline Theology', and Part Five considers the many productive reading strategies with which recent interpreters have made meaning of the letters of Paul. It is demonstrated that 'reading Paul' is not, and never has been, just one thing. It has always been a matter of the particular questions and interests that the reader brings to these very generative texts. The Oxford Handbook of Pauline Studies thoroughly surveys the state of Pauline studies today, paying particular attention to theory and method in interpretation. It considers traditional approaches alongside recent approaches to Paul, including gender, race and ethnicity, and material culture. Brought together, the chapters are an ideal resource for teachers and students of Paul and his letters.

Book Synopsis Architectural System Structures by : Kasper Sánchez Vibæk
Download or read book Architectural System Structures written by Kasper Sánchez Vibæk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a system structure in architectural design that conceptualises a systemic level in architecture and construction that lies between general construction techniques and specific architectural results. In order to make such a system structure operational, the elaboration of a model seeks on the one hand to analytically grasp and on the other hand to make it possible to actively work with system structures as part of architectural design. Kasper Sanchez Vibaek's ambition is to bridge an apparent and increasing gap between architectural ideation and the way these ideas are brought to life as real physical manifestations of our built environment. In line with the so-called systems sciences the book rejects the prevalent scientific view that the degree of detail ‘automatically’ enhances understanding and explanative power of complex phenomena. It establishes the idea of a systems view on buildings and architectural design that through the use of flexible constituent elements facilitates discussion and decision making about how architectural wholes are appropriately put together as assemblages of what the current and future building industry is capable of producing. Based on several years of detailed research into the architectural consequences of construction when exposed to industrialised production techniques and systems, Architectural System Structures represents a new way to look at what is already there and is useful for all those interested in the processes of architectural creation and realisation specifically attached to time, place and cultural context.
