Book Synopsis Gladiators at Pompeii by : Luciana Jacobelli
Download or read book Gladiators at Pompeii written by Luciana Jacobelli and published by L'ERMA di BRETSCHNEIDER. This book was released on 2003 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ruins of Pompeii reveal more graphically than anywhere else in the Roman world the vital role that gladiators and gladiatorial combat played in society. The Vesuvian eruption not only sealed the oldest amphitheatre to survive from antiquity, but also grafitti, elaborate weaponry, stone monuments and paintings which all testify to the popularity of gladiators, several of which are known to us by name. In addition, the discovery of a training barracks allows us to locate physically the place of gladiators in the city. This book, now available in English translation, presents the evidence from Pompeii in full colour photographs, accompanied by reconstruction drawings and an informative text that takes us through the streets of Pompeii as the gladiators would have known it.
Download or read book Diplomatics written by Luciana Duranti and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diplomatics was originally developed in France during the seventeenth century in attempts to prove the authenticity of archival documents. It was later refined in European universities as a legal, historical, and philological discipline, and in the twentieth century it has primarily been applied to medieval and early modern documents in order to evaluate their authority as sources of research. Diplomatics embraces the perspective of the modern archivist, and investigates the origin, development, and application of diplomatic concepts. It examines the organizational and evaluative effectiveness of diplomatic concepts in the context of modern records and archival systems, and looks at the relationship between originality and authenticity in records. The physical and intellectual form of records is examined, and the traditional methodology of diplomatic criticism is clearly explained and augmented by tips concerning its archival use. Diplomatics was originally a series of six articles that appeared in Archivaria, the journal of the Association of Canadian Archivists. In addition to those six articles, this volume contains an introduction that provides a broad synopsis of diplomatics, including its unused potential to help rethink record organization and use in a multimedia age fraught with increasingly complex informational problems.

This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stop! Let her go." A deep voice roared from outside of the dungeon forcing the guard leader's hand to hang in the air. Luciana gasped and fell to the ground, groaning as her wounded sore body came in contact with the hard cold floor but somehow grateful for the distraction and whoever it was that gave her a minute to breathe even if she knew it wouldn't last for long. All the eyes turned towards the figure. Anyone that could make the guard leader cower at his voice must be someone highly important. The figure walked into the dungeon room straight to Luciana where she lay helplessly on the ground. He towered over her with his penetrating eyes hovering over her. Then he gulped thickly. How could it be? The question pondered in his head as he stared down at the weak girl curled up and trembling before him whom a strange fragrance had drawn him to. Could she be ...his mate… "No…no way..." he muttered under his breath, taking a foot backward. There was no way he would agree to being mate to a weakling and a slave. Never.

Book Synopsis Contagious Architecture by : Luciana Parisi
Download or read book Contagious Architecture written by Luciana Parisi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proposal that algorithms are not simply instructions to be performed but thinking entities that construct digital spatio-temporalities. In Contagious Architecture, Luciana Parisi offers a philosophical inquiry into the status of the algorithm in architectural and interaction design. Her thesis is that algorithmic computation is not simply an abstract mathematical tool but constitutes a mode of thought in its own right, in that its operation extends into forms of abstraction that lie beyond direct human cognition and control. These include modes of infinity, contingency, and indeterminacy, as well as incomputable quantities underlying the iterative process of algorithmic processing. The main philosophical source for the project is Alfred North Whitehead, whose process philosophy is specifically designed to provide a vocabulary for “modes of thought” exhibiting various degrees of autonomy from human agency even as they are mobilized by it. Because algorithmic processing lies at the heart of the design practices now reshaping our world—from the physical spaces of our built environment to the networked spaces of digital culture—the nature of algorithmic thought is a topic of pressing importance that reraises questions of control and, ultimately, power. Contagious Architecture revisits cybernetic theories of control and information theory's notion of the incomputable in light of this rethinking of the role of algorithmic thought. Informed by recent debates in political and cultural theory around the changing landscape of power, it links the nature of abstraction to a new theory of power adequate to the complexities of the digital world.
