Book excerpt: Food Plant Safety: UV Applications for Food and Non-Food Surfaces discusses the fundamental principles of ultraviolet (UV) light technology, and gives practical recommendations on UV processes and systems design for specific processing operations, as well as how microbial efficacy of UV light can improve the quality of existing product lines. Innovative research of ultraviolet light for food applications has been growing worldwide. With increased consumer demand for fresher, minimally processed but safe foods, comes the need for novel technologies to meet that demand. Ultraviolet technology has been taking its niche in food production as a non-chemical treatment to control and enhance safety of processing plants and storage facilities. This concise resource covers the fundamentals of this promising technology and its applications; it will benefit a broad audience of professionals in food engineering, processing, and product development, as well as graduate level students. Focuses on plant processing operations in the food industry Presents the benefits of UV light technology applications for air quality, and safety of non-food and food contact surfaces Covers the cost benefits and energy and environmental advantages of using UV technologies
Book Synopsis Cardiovascular Development by : Rolf Bodmer
Download or read book Cardiovascular Development written by Rolf Bodmer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-11-13 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1993, Rolf Bodmer described a gene he named tinman that was required for the formation of the dorsal aorta of the fly. Flies without a functional tinman gene had no heart. Quickly, mammalian counterparts of the tinman gene were identified and found to be expressed by early cardiomyogenic precursors and by cardiomyocytes throughout heart development. Since then, significant progress has been made in the understanding of molecular and genetic determinants of heart formation. An ever growing number of genes have been identified that are required for cardiogenesis, as evidenced by severe abnormalities in cardiac development produced by inactivation in the mouse or inhibition of gene function in other model organisms. Cardiovascular Development covers some of the latest research in the study of heart formation. Volume Editor Rolf Bodmer has assembled a world-class list of contributors whose research uses a variety of animal models and whose findings are certain to enhance our understanding of this exciting field. * Ties together the development of heart morphology and conduction system * The latest developments in vertebrate and invertebrate genetic model systems * Technological advancements in cardiovascular science

Book Synopsis Civil Society, Participatory Governance, and Decent Work Objectives by : Konstantinos Papadakis
Download or read book Civil Society, Participatory Governance, and Decent Work Objectives written by Konstantinos Papadakis and published by International Labour Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study presents the findings of an in-depth research project carried out at the International Institute for Labour Studies from 2002 to 2005, designed to better understand how civil society organizations, working within participatory governance structures, may contribute to the goals of the ILO decent work agenda. The author examines the South African experience. Since the mid-1990s, South Africa has become a centre of innovation in public policy making and implementation, and it is hard to find a country in either the developed or developing world that has gone further in the institutionalization of participatory policy-making processes in a range of different fields. This study focuses on three areas, all relevant to the decent work agenda: Employment creation and poverty alleviation, health care and HIV/AIDS, and child labour, and examines the participatory processes set up at the national level in order to formulate and implement policies in these areas. It draws on both a literature review and the perceptions of key policy actors active in these three areas.
