Book excerpt: There are approximately 500 different soil varieties in Malaysia, most is residual soil and coastal alluvial soil. This book presents a comprehensive overview of various aspects of soils in Malaysia. It covers topics including climate; flora and fauna; geology and hydrology; land use changes for agriculture; soil fertility; human-induced soil degradation; and soil contamination sources. It features information on the role of biological, chemical, mechanical, and physical factors in relation to soil properties. The book highlights land use impact, soil problems arising from contamination and its control methods, the management of problem soils, limiting materials as well as future soil issues. The presentation of different soils in Malaysia is organized through chapters based on two major soil groups (a) the sedentary soils formed in the interior on a wide range of rock types, and (b) the soils of the coastal alluvial plains. The book features information on how these various soil types affect the economy of the country and highlights the soil issues and challenges within the context of sustainable agriculture. Useful to graduate students of soil science, professionals, and agriculturalists, it provides extensive knowledge of agriculture soils in Malaysia in a concise and user-friendly manner.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the effect of the Green Revolution (GR) on long-term changes in the fertility status of paddy soils in tropical Asia. While information on long-term changes in soil fertility status are rather limited due to difficulties in obtaining past data or samples for comparison, this investigation on temporal changes in soil fertility is possible by comparing fertility status in the 2010s, which the authors examined recently, with those from the 1960s, when GR was initiated, which was reported by Kawaguchi & Kyuma (1977). More than 220 paddy soils collected from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia were analyzed for their physicochemical properties as well as total and available fractions of plant macro- and micro- essential elements, and their temporal changes were examined in addition to their spatial variation in each country. The most significant change was a drastic increase of available phosphorus in soils, possibly due to fertilization after the GR. Changes in organic matter, pH, and other nutrients were relatively small. A considerable decrease in the content of some micronutrients was also observed. Long-term studies on soil fertility status in the past and present will be useful to establish soil/fertilizer management for sustainable rice production in the future. This book is an essential reading for soil scientists, agricultural scientists, environmental scientists, as well as policymakers and nongovernmental officers such as FAO.

Book excerpt: Rice is one of the principal cereals used by the world's inhabitants. The hope for improved nourishment of the world's population depends on the development of better rice varieties and improved methods for rice production and utilization. During the past four decades, interest in rice research and production has increased in many countries. The development of new and better varieties by the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines and other rice research institutes has stimulated numerous research stations to test the performance of these varieties in many countries under different climates, soil properties, cultural practices, and environmental conditions. The methods of harvesting, handling, drying, and milling rough rice have improved as a result of research efforts by the engineers and the rice milling industries. The first edition of Rice: Production and Utilization was published in 1980. This second edition presents the recent developments and progress made by the researchers, the industries, and various experiment stations. Because of the large amounts of literature available in recent years on rice production and utilization, this edition is divided into two volumes, Volume 1: Production and Volume II: Utilization. It is hoped that the books will be useful to rice researchers, processors, and people interested in rice production and utilization. Those studying v vi PREFACE the agronomy of rice plants, especially the genetics, breeding, cultivation, diseases, and insects that attack both the rice plant and the stored grain, will find this edition helpful in their search for new knowledge.

Book excerpt: Rice is the major staple food in Asia, and food security means rice security for most Asians. By the year 2025, we need to produce about 60% more rice than we do today to meet the growing demand. Efficient use of inputs is vital to safely produce the additional food from limited resources with minimal impact on the environment. This book reviews emerging knowledge-intensive technologies and decision aids for improved nutrient management in rice, technology adoption constraints at the farm level, and innovative approaches for field evaluation and promotion of new technologies to farmers. It is highly useful to rice scientists and development workers, students of agronomy, soil science, and plant nutrition, and crop consultants and extension workers in rice all over the world.
