Book Synopsis Transition Math Task Cards by : ETC Montessori Digital

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more students are moving into the upper elementary classroom without having achieved abstraction in multiplication and as a result, are not introduced to the whole number division sequence. Furthermore, we found that students continue to be weak in their multiplication facts, particularly those facts pertaining to 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s. This lack of achievement in abstraction and consequential weakness in understanding, results in the inability of children to participate in more advanced multiplication presentations. Our findings are particularly problematic since the mathematical sequence for both the advanced fractions and decimals assumes mastery of all whole number operations. Having taken all of these facts into consideration, we designed the Transition Math Task Cards for Level 9-12. With the understanding that teachers must bridge these gaps, while meeting math standards, we believe that this program is a viable sequence to help children move forward. The task cards provide ample opportunities for fact acquisition, and pertinent mathematical comprehension of what happens when multiplying by factors of ten. Children are also introduced to single and double digit division, allowing them to understand the relationship that exists between the two operations.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Classroom Management by : Carolyn M. Evertson
Download or read book Handbook of Classroom Management written by Carolyn M. Evertson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 1872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classroom management is a topic of enduring concern for teachers, administrators, and the public. It consistently ranks as the first or second most serious educational problem in the eyes of the general public, and beginning teachers consistently rank it as their most pressing concern during their early teaching years. Management problems continue to be a major cause of teacher burnout and job dissatisfaction. Strangely, despite this enduring concern on the part of educators and the public, few researchers have chosen to focus on classroom management or to identify themselves with this critical field. The Handbook of Classroom Management has four primary goals: 1) to clarify the term classroom management; 2) to demonstrate to scholars and practitioners that there is a distinct body of knowledge that directly addresses teachers’ managerial tasks; 3) to bring together disparate lines of research and encourage conversations across different areas of inquiry; and 4) to promote a vigorous agenda for future research in this area. To this end, 47 chapters have been organized into 10 sections, each chapter written by a recognized expert in that area. Cutting across the sections and chapters are the following themes: *First, positive teacher-student relationships are seen as the very core of effective classroom management. *Second, classroom management is viewed as a social and moral curriculum. *Third, external reward and punishment strategies are not seen as optimal for promoting academic and social-emotional growth and self-regulated behavior. *Fourth, to create orderly, productive environments teachers must take into account student characteristics such as age, developmental level, race, ethnicity, cultural background, socioeconomic status, and ableness. Like other research handbooks, the Handbook of Classroom Management provides an indispensable reference volume for scholars, teacher educators, in-service practitioners, and the academic libraries serving these audiences. It is also appropriate for graduate courses wholly or partly devoted to the study of classroom management.

Book Synopsis Extending Children's Mathematics by : Susan B. Empson
Download or read book Extending Children's Mathematics written by Susan B. Empson and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With the collaboration of a number of dedicated teachers and their students, Susan Empson and Linda Levi have produced a volume that is faithful to the basic principles of CGI while at the same time covering new ground with insight and innovation." -Thomas P. Carpenter This highly anticipated follow-up volume to the landmark Children's Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction addresses the urgent need to help teachers understand and teach fraction concepts. Fractions remain one of the key stumbling blocks in math education, and here Empson and Levi lay a foundation for understanding fractions and decimals in ways that build conceptual learning. They show how the same kinds of intuitive knowledge and sense making that provides the basis for children's learning of whole number arithmetic can be extended to fractions and decimals. Just as they did in Children's Mathematics and Thinking Mathematically, Empson and Levi provide important insights into children's thinking and alternative approaches to solving problems. Three themes appear throughout the book: building meaning for fractions and decimals through discussing and solving word problems the progression of children's strategies for solving fraction word problems and equations from direct modeling through relational thinking designing instruction that capitalizes on students' relational thinking strategies to integrate algebra into teaching and learning fractions. With illuminating examples of student work, classroom vignettes, "Teacher Commentaries" from the field, sample problems and instructional guides provided in each chapter, you'll have all the tools you need to teach fractions and decimals with understanding and confidence.
