Book excerpt: This dissertation pertains to the geometric structure of late type (spiral) galaxies, specifically on the relation between the logarithmic spiral pitch angle of the galactic spiral arms with other properties of the galaxy, such as central Supermassive Black Hole (SMBH) mass. Our work continues a study of the Black Hole Mass Function (BHMF) in local galaxies by recording the pitch angles of spiral galaxies with lower surface brightness than were previously included. We also conduct a case study on the structure of an interestingly shaped galaxy, UGC 4599. Previous studies on the topic of spiral arm pitch angles have measured the pitch angle of galaxies using a variety of image analysis techniques. Here the effectiveness of two of these techniques are assessed under different galaxy conditions and their errors and failure modes are probed as the measurement characteristics of simulated galaxies are manipulated and degraded. This is done for the purpose of recognizing and accounting for the limits of techniques for measuring the pitch angles of galaxies as they increase in redshift or decrease in surface brightness or angular resolution (pixel size). As a result, imaging based relations in galaxy structure may be applied to extend measurements from the local universe to greater distances as long as image degradation with distance is accounted for. In exploring populations of galaxies, errors in distribution studies might result from gaps in selection; galaxies with too little apparent structure or too faint a surface brightness to be recognized as spirals and included in the study. Errors might also result from inaccuracy or failure on the measurement side, where low resolution, low surface brightness galaxies produce pitch angle measurements characterized by higher failure rates and higher associated errors for successful measurements. We work to employ new techniques to minimize these errors as well as understand and account for their effects on the distributions being measured.

While its existence is generally agreed on, its distribution within galaxies is hotly debated. Low Surface Brightness (LSB) spirals are a class of galaxy with peculiarly low star-formation rates, and one possible explanation for this points to an overabundance of dark matter relative to normal (baryonic) matter. LSB spirals tend to be dark matter-dominated at all radii, which makes them an ideal place to probe the structure of galactic dark matter haloes. In contrast, “normal” High Surface Brightness (HSB) spirals are baryon-dominated at the core, which obscures the central structure and muddles the apparent mass distribution of the galaxy. Currently, LSB spirals appear to be compatible with a “cored” halo, possibly due to early central star formation driving baryons out of the center, which dragged dark matter out along with it, thereby transforming a cuspy halo into a cored one. This thesis explores both the mystery of LSB spirals and the mystery of dark matter, pairing them together to shed light on the evolutionary difference between LSB and HSB spiral galaxies and begin examining cusp-core transformation. Optical emission line-derived velocity fields are used to determine the dynamical mass at different radii in a sample of eight LSB spirals, and archival Spitzer IRAC images allow the stellar mass at different radii in these galaxies to be determined. This results in a robust estimation of the structure of each galaxy's dark matter halo. We conclude that LSB spirals indeed tend to be dark matter-dominated at all radii, and highlight UGC 4179 as a likely case of solid-body rotation. Additionally, a peculiar trend in the [OII] to [OIII] ratio in these spectra is apparent, possibly supporting the truncated IMF hypothesis to explain LSB spirals.

The low sensitivity of near-IR wavelengths to dust extinction is crucial for an unbiased geometric deprojection of fundamental galaxy parameters. We find, in agreement with Tully and Verheijen (1997), a clear dichotomy between high and low surface brightness galaxy disks. The difference between the low and high brightness peaks of Virgo galaxies is $\sim$2 H-mag arcsec$^{-2}$, significantly larger than any systematic errors. The high surface brightness galaxies have two distinct classes of bulge with high and low concentration, while low surface brightness galaxies have only low concentration bulges. The distribution of the effective surface brightnesses of our entire sample shows that early-type galaxies exhibit a similar structural bimodality though offset from that of spiral galaxies towards higher surface brightnesses. We find that the structural bimodality is uncorrelated with colour or any other structural parameter except, perhaps, the circular velocity. Simulations of realistic surface brightness profiles show that a bimodality in effective surface brightness is unexpected based on normal distributions of fundamental bulge and disk parameters. Rather, the structural bimodality is likely linked to the galaxy dynamics, namely the specific angular momentum of the galaxy; high surface brightness galaxies have low angular momentum and can collapse to form dynamically important disks, while low surface brightness galaxies are dominated by the dark halo everywhere. Finally, our bulge-disk decompositions of all the sample galaxy images using various fitting functions have revealed that galaxies of all morphologies, including flattened and spheroidal systems, exhibit a ``disk'' component which is best described by a generalized ``Sersic'' function. We also find that the majority of galaxy disks show significant devi.
