Book excerpt: The environmental fatigue crack propagation in 2024-T3, 7075-T6, and 7178-T6 was studied at low levels of cyclic amplitude of stress intensity, delta K. Both wedge force loading and remote loading techniques were employed to achieve the desired delta K levels, and preliminary experiments were designed to test their compatibility. Testing was carried out in humid air, distilled water, and 3.5% sodium chloride solution, and the observed crack growth rates compared with those in desiccated air. Later studies were also conducted in an inert reference environment with a total water content of less than 2 ppm. When the data are plotted as log delta K versus log d2a/dN, alloy 2024-T3 exhibits a marked slope transition, alloy 7075-T6 a slight slope transition, and alloy 7178-T6 a rectilinear behavior throughout the whole range of delta K studied. The basic shape of these curves is discussed in terms of state-of-stress conditions at the crack tip, frequency effects, environmental effects, strain rate sensitivity, and metallurgical structure. An attempt is also made to correlate the rate of fatigue crack propagation in a particular environment and at a particular delta K level with the fracture topography. (Author).

Book excerpt: Image Correlation for Shape, Motion and Deformation Measurements provides a comprehensive overview of data extraction through image analysis. Readers will find and in-depth look into various single- and multi-camera models (2D-DIC and 3D-DIC), two- and three-dimensional computer vision, and volumetric digital image correlation (VDIC). Fundamentals of accurate image matching are described, along with presentations of both new methods for quantitative error estimates in correlation-based motion measurements, and the effect of out-of-plane motion on 2D measurements. Thorough appendices offer descriptions of continuum mechanics formulations, methods for local surface strain estimation and non-linear optimization, as well as terminology in statistics and probability. With equal treatment of computer vision fundamentals and techniques for practical applications, this volume is both a reference for academic and industry-based researchers and engineers, as well as a valuable companion text for appropriate vision-based educational offerings.

Book excerpt: This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of the fatigue crack growth characteristics of some airframe materials under sinusoidal, narrow-band, and broad-band random loadings. Prerecorded random-time histories, generated by filtering the output of a white-noise generator to produce desired power spectral shapes, were utilized as input loadings to an electrohydraulic fatigue crack growth testing system. Uniform tension-tension loadings were applied to centrally cracked panels, and the fatigue crack growth behavior was observed. Alloys studied include 7075-T6 bare aluminum alloy, 2024-T3 bare aluminum alloy, Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V duplex and mill anneal, and Ti-6Al-4V mill anneal. Fracture-mechanics concepts are applied in correlating and comparing the fatigue crack growth behavior of the alloys. A comparison of sinusoidal- and random-loading behavior, based on the average of the greatest rise or fall in stress intensity between mean-level crossings, shows a faster fatigue crack growth rate for sinusoidal loading at the higher stress-intensity levels and a slower rate at the lower stress-intensity levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Book excerpt: The fatigue crack propagation behavior resulting from variations in load is examined for 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, from both a macroscopic and a fractographic point of view. A peak load is found to cause retardation of the crack growth rate, which becomes more pronounced as the percentage overload or baseline stress intensity level or both is increased. The delaying effect of the overload is observed to exist for a calculated crack length increment equivalent to the plastic zone size formed during the peak load. Multiple overloads and high-low block loading sequences are found to result in additional retardation. For a given ?K and percentage overload it is noted that the greatest retardation occurs when ? equals 1 (? = Kmax/?K).
