The seven participants in this study were a part of a graduate school preparation program (GSPP) at a Midwestern research university where undergraduate research was a mandatory component. Participants took part in undergraduate research during the summer of 2005 and enrolled in graduate school in the fall of 2006. Several theories influenced this study. These include critical theory, graduate school socialization theory, identity development theory, and self authorship theory. A qualitative approach was used to gather detailed data from the participants. Data collection included a series of in-depth, semi-structured interviews with each participant and analysis of GSPP documents. All of the data collected were carefully coded, looking for common themes and patterns. For these low-income students, their first year of graduate school was marked by the interplay between social and academic transitions. Even though all students experience insecurity and anxiety as they begin graduate school, low-income students' experiences are compounded by other insecurities as well. Additionally, these students experienced isolation which further complicated their graduate school socialization process. Understanding the varied needs of low-income students as they begin their graduate studies helps university program administrators, student affairs professionals and faculty to better support these students so that they complete degrees.

Engaging in a series of in-depth semi-structured interviews, the researcher examined the lived experiences of twelve first generation college students who have persisted at Saint Lucia University (SLU), a faith-based, four year liberal arts college located in California. Four central themes emerged: Support (especially from parents), Challenges Endured, Impetus to Stick it Out, and Institutional Factors. Aside from challenges that included unclear expectations about college life and a lack of confidence in their academic readiness, (though SLU has a population of students who are 55% ethnic minority) many participants encountered a dose of culture shock, as they perceived SLU to be "mostly White and mostly rich." Others professed having encountered racial discrimination. Indeed, it was daunting experiences like these that were most taxing on the participants and their ability to persist to degree. Nevertheless, for many of these students, their dire impetus to succeed was for the prospect of making a better life for themselves and their families."--Abstract, p. 1.

As state and federal lawmakers, accrediting agencies, and governing bodies demand more accountability for retention and graduation rates from college and university administrators, it is important to develop a better understanding of college student graduation behavior at the institutional level. The study of college student retention and persistence to degree completion has been plagued with methodological problems and inconsistent findings, especially when the longitudinal nature of the process is considered. Event history analysis is a regression-like technique that allows researchers to investigate the timing of graduation while addressing many of the concerns associated with the longitudinal study of college graduation behavior, such as censored cases and time-varying variables. The present study used event history analysis to understand the temporal dimensions of graduation and the factors that affect whether students succeed or fail, particularly at the study institution. Pre-enrollment, enrollment, and financial aid variables were used to model the timing of graduation for three cohorts of first-time, full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students for a six year period. Consistent with other studies employing event history analysis to student retention and degree completion, adding a time dimension improves our understanding of event occurrence. The present study also provides support for the strong relationship between the longitudinal effects of academic performance while in college (as measured by cumulative GPA) and graduation.
