Even higher brightness could be achieved with a higher electron beam energy of 2 MeV; however, RF breakdown in the tested structures limited the beam energy to about 1 MeV. Results were also obtained for the 2.4 cell RF gun. While this gun provided a modest increase in beam energy to 1.25 MeV, the presence of undesirable quadrupole modes in the structure led to a lower beam brightness. Techniques for further improvement of the RF gun are described.

To satisfy the scientific curiosity, as well as to push our civilization forward by investigating new physics phenomena, we need to continue improving the devices at our disposal, including high energy particle accelerators. To pave a road for a new accelerator development, beam characterization needs to be undertaken including studies of the properties of low emittance electron beams produced by laser pulses incident onto an rf gun photocathode such as described in this book. The experimental results discussed here were carried out at the A0 photoinjector at Fermilab. Such beam studies are especially important for fixing the design of new linear colliders as well as for the development of free electron lasers.

Simulations of beam production, transport, and focus are presented. It is shown that a 1 ps, 500 pC electron bunch with a normalized emittance of less than 5 [pi]mm-mrad can be delivered to the interaction point. Initial electron measurements are presented. Calculations of expected x-ray flux are also performed, demonstrating an expected peak spectral brightness of 102° photons/s/mm2/mrad2/0.1% bandwidth. Effects of RF phase jitter are also presented, and planned phase measurements and control methods are discussed.

Book excerpt: The Argonne Wakefield Accelerator's (AWA) witness RF photocathode gun produced its first electron beam in April of 1996. We have characterized the charge, energy, emittance and bunch length of the witness beam over the last several months. The emittance Was measured by both a quad scan that fitted for space charge using an in house developed Mathematica routine and a pepper pot technique. The bunch length was measured by imaging Cherenkov light from a quartz plate to a Hamamatsu streak camera with 2 psec resolution. A beam energy of 3.9 Mev was measured with a 6 inch round pole spectrometer while a beam charge was measured with both an ICT and a Faraday Cup. Although the gun will normally be run at 100 pC it has produced charges from 10 pC to 4 nc. All results of the measurements to date are presented here.
