Book Synopsis The Battle for Wine and Love by : Alice Feiring
Download or read book The Battle for Wine and Love written by Alice Feiring and published by HMH. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “entertaining and passionate” connoisseur tours the vineyards of Europe and California, arguing for an old-fashioned appreciation of authenticity (The New York Times). The drastic effects that influential wine critic Robert M. Parker Jr. has had on the winemaking industry are best described as wine Parkerization. Many vintners are leaving old techniques behind and turning to chemistry and technology in order to please Parker’s palate. This led to the disappearance of James Beard Foundation Award–winning writer Alice Feiring’s favorite wines—and she was determined to learn why. In a one-woman crusade that will have you wondering what exactly is in your glass, Feiring argues against the tyranny of homogenization, Big Wine, consultants, and, of course, Parker’s infamous one hundred-point scoring system. Traveling through the vineyards of the Loire and Champagne, to Piedmont and Spain, she searches for authentic Barolo, the last old-style Rioja, and the tastiest terroir-driven Champagnes. Feiring reveals what goes into the average bottle—the reverse osmosis, the yeasts and enzymes, the sawdust and oak chips—and why she doesn’t find much to drink in California. She introduces rebel winemakers who are embracing old-fashioned techniques and making wines with individuality and soul. And finally Feiring explains what love’s really got to do with it all, in a delightful read for anyone who truly appreciates the good things in life.

Book excerpt: The Marquis of Darincourt who is the greatest matrimonial catch in the Beau Monde decides at last that he will get married and has chosen Lady Charlotte Warde to be his wife. He has been pursued for years by every debutante and ambitious mother, but he has, however, preferred the sophisticated married women who amuse him with their provocative wit and attractions. He is a hero from the war with Napoleon and the Duke Wellington had twice awarded him the Gold Medal for Bravery. As he is the owner of one of the most famous houses in England, immensely rich and of high social standing, he is determined not to be married except for himself as a man. However, as his family are so insistent on his marrying for an heir to carry on the title, he drives to Lady Charlotte’s house to ask her to be his wife. When he arrives to his astonishment Lady Charlotte informs him that she is going to marry the young Duke of Nottingham simply because he is a Duke. Furious and frustrated, he drives his phaeton away, but is stopped on the drive by a young girl who begs him to take her with him. The beautiful Serla Ashton is the niece of the Earl of Langwarde and Lady Charlotte’s cousin, who has been very badly treated because her mother ran away the night before her Wedding to a Royal Prince. Serla persuades the Marquis to take her to London and on the way he has the brilliant idea of saving himself from being laughed at for losing Lady Charlotte by announcing that he and Serla are engaged to be married. She agrees to the charade and with the help of the Marquis’s grandmother she becomes one of the beauties of the Beau Monde overnight. How the Marquis is delighted at making people believe that it is he who has rejected Lady Charlotte rather than the other way round. How Lady Charlotte takes a bitter and frightening revenge on Serla and the Marquis and how they both eventually find the love they are seeking is all related in this exciting and unusual story by BARBARA CARTLAND.

Download or read book Battle Scars written by Chip Reid and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2023-09-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique insight into how combat in Iraq has shaped the lives of a battalion of young Marines. The most eye-opening, and terrifying, story in Chip Reid's career as a journalist was the six weeks he spent with 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, as a correspondent for NBC News. Traveling shoulder-to-shoulder with the young Marines, he had unparalleled access, witnessing them in combat, and interviewing as many as he could persuade his bosses to put on air, allowing them to tell their war stories in their own words. It took only 22 days for the Marines of 3/5 to fight their way to Baghdad, but the effects on those who fought have lasted a lifetime. They lost a number of their own in battle, and others suffered life-threatening injuries. Of those who returned - even if they avoided physical scars - many have had to find their own way through survivor's guilt and the nightmare of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, with all its attendant miseries. Twenty years on, Chip sat down with the Marines of 3/5 once more. They told Chip inspiring stories of heroism in battle, of camaraderie and comrades lost, of patriotism and belief in mission, of recovery and success in both military and civilian life, and of the new appreciation for life that results from Post-Traumatic Growth. Visceral and searingly honest, this book is a tribute to the Marines for their service, and for the many sacrifices they made then, and that many still make today.

Book Synopsis The Last Battle of Atlantis by : Thomas D. Turner
Download or read book The Last Battle of Atlantis written by Thomas D. Turner and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-12-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve thousand years ago, heroes and antagonists were made. Civilizations were starting to flourish. Within their social structures there was love, honor, and friendship. On the other side of the spectrum, there was also greed, fear, and power. Within the last one hundred years, archeologists and paleontologists unearthed a new world. After the Ice age, archeologists discovered civilizations with architectural buildings and commerce. Paleontologists have proof of animals which were not like we are accustomed to today. They have uncovered giant sloths, mammoths, giant rhinos, and giant elk, all living amongst the civilizations before written history. So far, Atlantis is a legend. In those legends there had to be a leader and hero that brought Atlantis together. The story of Atlandreous unfolds as Duncan, a present day archeologist, visions the beginning of the Atlantean Empire.
Download or read book Love and War written by Tom Digby and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideas of masculinity and femininity become sharply defined in war-reliant societies, resulting in a presumed enmity between men and women. This so-called "battle of the sexes" is intensified by the use of misogyny to encourage men and boys to conform to the demands of masculinity. These are among Tom Digby's fascinating insights shared in Love and War, which describes the making and manipulation of gender in militaristic societies and the sweeping consequences for men and women in their personal, romantic, sexual, and professional lives. Drawing on cross-cultural comparisons and examples from popular media, including sports culture, the rise of "gonzo" and "bangbus" pornography, and "internet trolls," Digby describes how the hatred of women and the suppression of empathy are used to define masculinity, thereby undermining relations between women and men—sometimes even to the extent of violence. Employing diverse philosophical methodologies, he identifies the cultural elements that contribute to heterosexual antagonism, such as an enduring faith in male force to solve problems, the glorification of violent men who suppress caring emotions, the devaluation of men's physical and emotional lives, an imaginary gender binary, male privilege premised on the subordination of women, and the use of misogyny to encourage masculine behavior. Digby tracks the "collateral damage" of this disabling misogyny in the lives of both men and women, but ends on a hopeful note. He ultimately finds the link between war and gender to be dissolving in many societies: war is becoming slowly de-gendered, and gender is becoming slowly de-militarized.
