Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Lovely Violence: Chrétien de Troyes’ Critical Romances, Jørgen Bruhn rereads the well-known but still intriguing chivalric novels of the medieval French author Chrétien de Troyes (from the second half of the twelfth century, probably in northern France). Jørgen Bruhn—who is trained in modern comparative literature and literary theory—engages in a meeting with the medieval texts where the “strange” medieval contexts and texts are played up against more familiar contemporary concerns around textuality, gender and in particular the vexed question of violence. After an introduction and an attempt to construct a useful context around the texts of Chrétien de Troyes, Bruhn discusses the five chivalric novels which are normally known under the names of the more or less heroic heroes: Erec, Cligès, Yvain, Lancelot and Perceval. The medieval characters turn out to behave in ways that are both shockingly strange and “medieval,” and at the same time resassuringly recognisable. The Middle Ages may not be so unmodern after all.

Book excerpt: Marshal Philippe Pétain was, in the words of historian Andrew Roberts, 'the most controversial Frenchman of the twentieth century.' A truly distinguished soldier who rose from humble origins, he commanded French forces at Verdun in 1916 and became a national hero. But though by 1940 he had become French Deputy Prime Minister his political abilities were meagre. And after France fell to the Nazis it was Pétain who signed the armistice and, from the spa town of Vichy, ruled over the Etat Francais Hitler had left him. Richard Griffiths tells this sorry story in outstanding detail, all the way to Pétain's ignominious end, and not stinting to show his culpability in the Vichy persecution of French Jews and its suppression of the internal Resistance. 'Petain, utterly obscure until the age of 58, was hurled to fame by his defence of Verdun in 1916. This saved his country's bacon (he would say her honour) at a crisis point of the Great War. Thereafter he became an almost monarchical figure, more revered than any living Frenchman, even after the disaster of 1940. But then, as head of the puppet Vichy government, he slid into ignominy after failing to square honour with military humiliation. Griffiths's durable biography... paints not a devil but a courageous, misguided man with a hole where others keep their political acumen.' Robin Blake, Independent

Book excerpt: We Come Unseen, first published in 2001, follows the careers of six Royal Navy submariners from their graduation from Dartmouth's Britannia Royal Naval College in 1963, just after the Cuban Missile Crisis, to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Between these dates, it seemed that nuclear war was never far away - and Jim Ring explains not only the nuclear threat and its beginnings in the last days of the Second World War, but why the Polaris and Trident submarines ('capable of inflicting the damage of the bombs that fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki many times over'), and their accompanying attack submarines, were critical to avoiding war. Alongside a gripping narrative of the Cold War game of hide-and-seek played out under the waves of the northern seas, Ring gives an account of the history of submarine warfare from its earliest, pre-nuclear days to the 1982 combat in the Falklands.'A welcome acknowledgement of one of the Cold War's little-known aspects.' Book excerpt: Electronic music is now ubiquitous, from mainstream pop hits to the furthest reaches of the avant garde. But how did we get here? In Mars by 1980, David Stubbs charts the evolution of synthesised tones, from the earliest mechanical experiments in the late nineteenth century, through the musique concrete of the Futurists and radical composers such as Pierre Schaeffer and Karl Stockhausen, to the gradual absorption of electronic instrumentation into the mainstream, be it through the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, grandiose prog rock or the DIY approach of electronica, house and techno.Stubbs tells a tale of mavericks and future dreamers, malfunctioning devices and sonic mayhem. But above all, he describes an essential story of authenticity: is this music? Mars by 1980 is the definitive account that answers this question.

Book excerpt: Hoping It Might Be So brings together all of Kit Wright's previous collections for adults as well as three dozen new poems. The collection, first published in 2000, was described by Christina Patterson in the Sunday Times as 'funny and profoundly humane' and by Sophie Hannah in the PN Review as 'full of verve and energy, with a strong musical quality that makes you want to read on and hear more'. Sean O'Brien in the Times Literary Supplement described Kit Wright as 'a masterly yet modest poet' while Ruth Padel in the Independent on Sunday said that 'all through his work there is that poignancy, darkness, brush with despair, which marks great comic work.' The poet Anthony Wilson said that Wright 'can be funny, serious and moving, and sometimes all three in the space of a single poem'. Hoping It Might Be So is a rewarding collection from an interesting, prolific and lively poet whose poems range from ribald to grief-stricken, elegiac to rambunctious

Book excerpt: Who were and who are the European other(s), and how have their socio-cultural circumstances been aesthetically expressed and discussed in works of literature and art in European history? Members of the interdisciplinary group of researchers "The Borders of Europe" address these questions in this book and shed new light on the notion of European transnational identity, self-conscience and exclusion. Making a mental, space-time journey across and beyond internal and external borders of Europe - moving from medieval times to the present, from Istanbul to the northernmost tip of Norway - the authors show how the dangerous dynamics of othering, estrangement, intolerance and hatred have become an inherent part of the continent's history.
