Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JULIAN OF NORWICH, England's greatest mystic, became the first woman to write in the English language when she recorded her Sixteen Showings revealing an intimate message of God's love and well-being for his human family. In the week of May 8, 1375, she suffered a series of visions centring on the final sufferings of Christ. Following this overwhelming experience, she became an anchorite in a cell attached to the tiny church of St Julian in the city of Norwich. And here she spent more than twenty years in prayerful contemplation, eventually recording her Showings. The first woman to write in the English tongue, her writings only came to the fore at the beginning of the twentieth century; they have gained a growing audience worldwide ever since. John Skinner's modern translation, A Revelation of Love (published by Gracewing in 2004), with its inclusive language offered a fresh approach to Julian's powerful message of God's love for his human family. The aim of his latest work is to enable newcomers to Julian to understand her complex theology and penetrate her deepest meaning. Using the major part of his original translation, Skinner inserts commentary and interpretation into the text. The result is a flowing account of Julian's work where her voice is to be heard ever more clearly.

Download or read book Revelations of Divine Love written by Julian of Norwich and published by Ixia Press. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteenth-century anchorite known as Julian of Norwich offered fervent prayers for a deeper understanding of Christ's passion. The holy woman's petitions were answered with a series of divine revelations that she called "shewings." Her mystic visions revealed Christ's sufferings with extreme intensity, but they also confirmed God's constant love for humanity and infinite capacity for forgiveness. Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love have had a lasting influence on Christian thought. Written in immediate, compelling terms, her experiences remain among the most original and accessible expressions of medieval mysticism. This edition contains both the short text, which is mainly an account of the shewings and Julian's initial analysis of their meaning, and the long text, completed some 20 years later and offering daringly speculative interpretations.

But who was Julian of Norwich? And what can she teach us today? Medievalist and TV historian Janina Ramirez invites you to join her in exploring Julian’s remarkable life and times, offering insights into how and why her writing has survived, and what we can learn from this fourteenth-century mystic whose work lay hidden in the shadows of her male contemporaries for far too long.

Book Synopsis Showings of Julian of Norwich by : Mirabai Starr
Download or read book Showings of Julian of Norwich written by Mirabai Starr and published by Hampton Roads Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh and contemporary translation of one of the best loved and influential mystical texts of all time, The Showings of Julian of Norwich brings the message and spirituality of this 14th century mystic to 21st century readers. Julian of Norwich, a contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, was an English anchoress in East Anglia. At the age of 30, suffering from a severe illness and believing she was on her deathbed, Julian had a series of intense visions of Jesus, which she recorded and then expanded on later in her life. Her message for today's readers is simply this: She reveals the feminine face of the Divine and reminds us to see God there. All our failings are an opportunity to learn and grow; that they should be honored, but not dwelled upon. God's love has nothing to do with love and retribution and everything to do with love and compassion. In spite of all appearances, all is well.
Book Synopsis Showing of Love by : Julian (of Norwich)
Download or read book Showing of Love written by Julian (of Norwich) and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Showing of Love, Julia Bolton Holloway provides a complete translation of Julian of Norwich's ground-breaking text, opening windows of insight into her medieval world. As a female mystic and theologian who was uniquely recognized (in a time when most women were not) for her holiness, Julian of Norwich also came to be known as a catechist, prophet, and spiritual director. Showing of Love records her own healing encounter with divine love and has for many centuries been a source of healing and inspiration for others. Readers of Julian's work find her belief that God sits in our soul as a fair city to be of profound value. That city is every city, Mary its queen, Christ its king. Julian offers these layers in rich text and variant readings. Julian dedicated years of her life to shaping Showing of Love, at the end rewriting it to preserve it from censorship. The anchoress lived in St. Julian's churchyard in Norwich. Her text was saved from destruction by nuns in Brigittine and Benedictine convents, first in England, then in exile after the Reformation. Julian's writings were later published by the Benedictines in 1670. They reveal her strong links with Benedict that continue to have lasting value for readers today. Includes two-color ink on inside pages. Julia Bolton Holloway, PhD, is a vowed hermit living in Florence, Italy. She has published seventeen other works on important historical figures.
Book Synopsis Living Resurrected Lives by : Veronica Mary Rolf
Download or read book Living Resurrected Lives written by Veronica Mary Rolf and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ's bodily resurrection is the foundation of Christian faith; at least, it is supposed to be. But how often do we really consider what that means? Living Resurrected Lives explores what it would take for Christians to understand and believe so clearly in resurrection--both Christ's glorification and the promise of our own--that our lives would be radically transformed by that faith right now. We take a daringly integrated approach, balancing careful consideration of sacred Scripture with attention to history, theology, and personal contemplative practice. We offer arguments to re-establish a firm bedrock for belief in the Gospel accounts, suggest a new theological perspective that integrates scientific insights into quantum uncertainty with reflections on the malleable nature of identity, and provide heart-stirring guided meditations for daily practice. We elucidate St. Paul's teachings on the transformation of the body and grapple with age-old conundrums about decaying corpses and the continuity of personal identity: What dies? What lives on? We revisit early Christian intuitions about the sublime qualities of the glorified body and explore how we might cultivate such qualities through our own individual practice. Thus we propose an embodied resurrection mysticism that can permeate every moment of our lives.

Book Synopsis The Love That Is God by : Frederick Christian Bauerschmidt
Download or read book The Love That Is God written by Frederick Christian Bauerschmidt and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “God is love is the radical claim of Christianity,” writes Frederick Bauerschmidt at the beginning of this little meditation on the essentials of Christian faith. In a rich yet accessible style reminiscent of C. S. Lewis and G. K. Chesterton, Bauerschmidt breathes life back into that claim, drawing from Scripture, great Christian and non-Christian writers of the past, and his own lived experience to show just how countercultural and subversive Christianity is actually meant to be. Eschewing the abstract and dogmatic in favor of the relational and inviting, he offers something for everyone, from lifelong churchgoers and students of religion to the growing population of “nones” among younger generations who are increasingly seeking spiritual fulfillment outside of institutional Christianity. With further reading suggestions (both scriptural and nonscriptural) at the end of each chapter, The Love That Is God is the perfect starting point of a spiritual journey into deeper relationship with God.
Book Synopsis Laughing at the Devil by : Amy Laura Hall
Download or read book Laughing at the Devil written by Amy Laura Hall and published by Duke University Press Books. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laughing at the Devil is an invitation to see the world with a medieval visionary now known as Julian of Norwich, believed to be the first woman to have written a book in English. (We do not know her given name, because she became known by the name of a church that became her home.) Julian “saw our Lord scorn [the Devil's] wickedness” and noted that “he wants us to do the same.” In this impassioned, analytic, and irreverent book, Amy Laura Hall emphasizes Julian's call to scorn the Devil. Julian of Norwich envisioned courage during a time of fear. Laughing at the Devil describes how a courageous woman transformed a setting of dread into hope, solidarity, and resistance.

Book Synopsis The Secret Within by : Wolfgang Riehle
Download or read book The Secret Within written by Wolfgang Riehle and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritual seekers throughout history have sought illumination through solitary contemplation. In the Christian tradition, medieval England stands out for its remarkable array of hermits, recluses, and spiritual outsiders, from Cuthbert Godric of Fichale and Christina of Markyate to Richard Rolle, Julian of Norwich, and Margery Kempe. In The Secret Within, Wolfgang Riehle offers the first comprehensive history of English medieval mysticism in decades, one that will appeal to anyone fascinated by mysticism as a phenomenon of religious life. In considering the origins and evolution of the English mystical tradition, Riehle begins in the twelfth century with the revival of eremitical mysticism and the early growth of the Cistercian Order in the British Isles. He then focuses in depth on the great mystics of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries: Richard Rolle (the first great English mystic), the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing, Walter Hilton, Margery Kempe, and Julian of Norwich. Riehle carefully grounds his narrative in the broader spiritual landscape of the Middle Ages, pointing out both prior influences dating back to Late Antiquity and corresponding developments in mysticism and theology on the Continent. He discusses the problem of possible differences between male and female spirituality and the movement of popularizing mysticism in the late Middle Ages. Filled with fresh insights, The Secret Within will be welcomed especially by teachers and students of medieval literature as well as by those engaged in historical, theological, philosophical, cultural, even anthropological and comparative studies of mysticism.
