Book excerpt: A new edition of the definitive title in the field of contemporary art photography by one of the world’s leading experts on the subject, Charlotte Cotton. In the twenty-first century, photography has come of age as a contemporary art form. Almost two centuries after photographic technology was first invented, the art world has fully embraced it as a legitimate medium, equal in status to painting and sculpture. The Photograph as Contemporary Art introduces the extraordinary range of contemporary art photography, from portraits of intimate life to highly staged directorial spectacles. Arranged thematically, the book reproduces work from a vast span of photographers, including Andreas Gursky, Barbara Kasten, Catherine Opie, Cindy Sherman, Deana Lawson, Diana Markosian, Elle Pérez, Gregory Halpern, Lieko Shiga, Nan Goldin, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Pixy Liao, Susan Meiselas, and Zanele Muholi. This fully revised and updated new edition revitalizes previous discussion of works from the 2000s through dialogue with more recent practice. Alongside previously featured work, Charlotte Cotton celebrates a new generation of artists who are shaping photography as a culturally significant medium for our current sociopolitical climate. A superb resource, The Photograph as Contemporary Art is a uniquely broad and diverse reflection of the field.

Book excerpt: This searing critique of participatory art—from its development to its political ambitions—is “an essential title for contemporary art history scholars and students as well as anyone who has . . . thought, ‘Now that’s art!’ or ‘That’s art?’” (Library Journal) Since the 1990s, critics and curators have broadly accepted the notion that participatory art is the ultimate political art: that by encouraging an audience to take part an artist can promote new emancipatory social relations. Around the world, the champions of this form of expression are numerous, ranging from art historians such as Grant Kester, curators such as Nicolas Bourriaud and Nato Thompson, to performance theorists such as Shannon Jackson. Artificial Hells is the first historical and theoretical overview of socially engaged participatory art, known in the US as “social practice.” Claire Bishop follows the trajectory of twentieth-century art and examines key moments in the development of a participatory aesthetic. This itinerary takes in Futurism and Dada; the Situationist International; Happenings in Eastern Europe, Argentina and Paris; the 1970s Community Arts Movement; and the Artists Placement Group. It concludes with a discussion of long-term educational projects by contemporary artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tania Bruguera, Pawel Althamer and Paul Chan. Since her controversial essay in Artforum in 2006, Claire Bishop has been one of the few to challenge the political and aesthetic ambitions of participatory art. In Artificial Hells, she not only scrutinizes the emancipatory claims made for these projects, but also provides an alternative to the ethical (rather than artistic) criteria invited by such artworks. Artificial Hells calls for a less prescriptive approach to art and politics, and for more compelling, troubling, and bolder forms of participatory art and criticism.

Book excerpt: Swedish artist Lotta Antonsson's recent work recalls her fascination with the late 1960s and '70s, in a style "where documentary and fiction blur in a merging of social and sexual revolutions" according to the essay by Patrik Andersson. From a process that utilizes techniques of collage and montage emerges a very personal way of looking at the ephemeral nature of things, whether printed matter (magazines, books) or natural objects (shells, minerals, driftwood). Antonsson's analogue cuts and repetitions seize upon the allegorical potential of image fragments, freeing fashion and erotic photography in an exploration into the gendered side of this clichéd history.

Book excerpt: Tiré du site Internet de Book Works: "Inspired by Fluxus, Lindberg's practice spans different media and concepts, however the material nature of the work is key, materials and objects are often found and given back to us slightly altered and playfully arranged. Drawing on the everyday, Lindberg's work often presents low-key and illogical humour, the titles of the works are central, but take on an absurd quality when one is presented with a dry matter-of-fact corresponding image. This is the frst comprehensive publication of Lindberg's work, co-published with Göteborgs Konsthall to coincide with her major solo show there."

Book excerpt: PREFACEThese fleeting sketches are all republished by kind permission of the Editor of the DAILY NEWS, in which paper they appeared. They amount to no more than a sort of sporadic diary-a diary recording one day in twenty which happened to stick in the fancy-the only kind of diary the author has ever been able to keep. Even that diary he could only keep by keeping it in public, for bread and cheese. But trivial as are the topics they are not utterly without a connecting thread of motive. As the reader's eye strays, with hearty relief, from these pages, it probably alights on something, a bed-post or a lamp-post, a window blind or a wall.

Book excerpt: Part of the acclaimed 'Documents of Contemporary Art' series of anthologies. This title comprehensively surveys and looks beyond the phenomenon of "designart" that has emerged since the Pop and Minimalist era: cutting edge, hybrid practices that blur traditional boundaries between art, architecture, graphics and product design. Key debates about form and function, the everyday, the collective and the utopian are contextualized historically and theoretically by leading practitioners and critics from both the art and the design worlds. Contributors include David Bourdon, Peter Cook/Archigram, Douglas Coupland, Kees Dorst, Charles Eames, Experimental Jetset, Vilém Flusser, Hal Foster, Liam Gillick, Dan Graham, Clement Greenberg, Richard Hamilton, Donald Judd, Frederick Kiesler, Miwon Kwon, Maria Lind, M/M, N55, George Nelson, Lucy Orta, Jorge Pardo, Norman Potter, Rick Poynor, Paul Rand, Tobias Rehberger, Ed Ruscha, Joe Scanlan, Mary Anne Staniszewski, Superflex, Manfredo Tafuri, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Paul Virilio, Joep van Lieshout, Andy Warhol, Benjamin Weil, Mark Wigley and Andrea Zittel.

Book excerpt: Type Specific shows designers how typefaces designed for a specific purpose succeed by exploring each of the features that must be considered. These include letterforms, counterspaces, cross sections, ascenders/descenders and junctions and how they work, in both print and screen, across a range of applications: posters, directories, newspapers and magazines, CD covers, packaging, signage and film titles - including The Kitchen's organic paintbrush front for the promotion of Levi's Vintage Clothing and Saturday's elegant stencil-style face for the Chen Pascual identity. The whole gamut from free-from to precision is explored.
