Book excerpt: Minden has transformed quite a bit since Charles Vedeer founded it in 1835. The town has suffered damages of the Civil War and Reconstruction and between 1872 and 1933 the devastation of five fires and a killer tornado. Despite disaster, Minden continues to progress, but adaptation and rebuilding have caused many familiar landmarks to vanish from the local landscape. The 1902 fire led to the enactment of a city ordinance banning wooden structures downtown; as a result, many edifices were reconstructed. Today, not a single building in the business district predates the 1870s, and the roles of those still standing--such as the First National Bank, which is expected to reopen as a restaurant--are continually changing. In 1918, another fire destroyed the Minden Lumber Mill, the town's largest industry. Later in the 20th century, the development of a city government complex demolished an entire shopping district, the 1905 Webster Parish Courthouse, and Minden City Hall. Lost Minden captures catastrophes, celebrations, storefronts, and back streets that otherwise only remain in memories. ?John Agan is a lifelong Minden resident who has been actively involved in local history writing and research for more than 30 years. In the course of these activities, he accumulated most of the vintage photographs in this volume that depict the Minden that has since been "lost."

Book excerpt: “A grand adventure,” this story of the Allied POWs who staged one of history’s greatest escapes from prison camp is “narrative non-fiction at its finest” (Booklist). At the height of World War I, as battles raged in the trenches and in the air, another struggle for survival was being waged in the most notorious POW camp in all of Germany: Holzminden. A land-locked Alcatraz of sorts, it was home to the most troublesome Allied prisoners—and the most talented at escape. Download or read book Frederick the Great and the Seven Years' War, 1756-1763 written by Herbert J. Redman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seven Years' War (1756-1763), known as the French and Indian War in North America, was perhaps the first war that might be called a world war. It involved the major European countries, North and Central America, the coast of West Africa, the Philippines, and India. A major player in the war was Frederick the Great (1712-1786), the king of Prussia and a great military leader. The first major work on the monarch and his role in the war for more than a century, this book sheds light on many aspects of military and European history.

Download or read book Me, Mom, and World War II written by Albert F. Pishioneri and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mr. Pishioneri weaves a great story that brings you through the times when love of family and love of country meant the world to the people of America." Hanging beneath a B-24 Liberator in flight, in 40 to 60 degree weather, bringing his own oxygen and heat with him in this hostile environment; a moving target for enemy fighters, gives one a unique perspective from which to ponder who and what it's all about. The author, a veteran of 35 bombing missions over occupied Europe during World War II, recalls his experiences illuminated by the insight of a Bachelor of Science in American History and 37 1/2 years of teaching Social Studies. A veteran storyteller and talented artist, he weaves his story by chronicling the historical events and personal experiences of his service life between the actual letters he wrote home that were preserved for him by his mother. In Me, Mom and World War II, the reader steps back in time to experience life as the middle child of a large Italian-American family growing up in a small steel town in Western Pennsylvania. The loss of their father, and living through The Great Depression followed by "the emergency" brought on by the bombing of Pearl Harbor forged within them a strength and courage that held them together.
