Book excerpt: Straddling the border between England and Wales, the railway linking Shrewsbury to Chester has been serving the communities along its length since 1848, as well as being, for over a century, a key component of the Great Western Railway's main line from the Mersey to London. It still remains busy with passenger trains and some freight, so it is not lost in the conventional sense, however, this pictorial journey along what remains an attractive and scenic line focuses on its heyday in the age of steam hauled-trains. Whilst much of the infrastructure of the steam age has been swept away, the line is still busy and remains an important transport link.

Book Synopsis Medieval Graffiti by : Matthew Champion
Download or read book Medieval Graffiti written by Matthew Champion and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries carved writings and artworks in churches lay largely unnoticed. So archaeologist Matthew Champion started a nationwide survey to gather the best examples. In this book he shines a spotlight on a forgotten world of ships, prayers for good fortune, satirical cartoons, charms, curses, windmills, word puzzles, architectural plans and heraldic designs. Drawing on examples from surviving medieval churches in England, the author gives a voice to the secret graffiti artists: from the lord of the manor and the parish priest to the people who built the church itself. Here are strange medieval beasts, knights battling unseen dragons, ships sailing across lime-washed oceans and demons who stalk the walls. Latin prayers for the dead jostle with medieval curses, builders’ accounts and slanderous comments concerning a long-dead archdeacon. Strange and complex geometric designs, created to ward off the ‘evil eye’ and thwart the works of the devil, share church pillars with the heraldic shields of England’s medieval nobility.

Download or read book Lost Lines of Wales written by Jamie Green and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having covered the southern section of the Central Wales Line and its branches in Swansea to Llandovery, this volume traces the line from Llandovery to Craven Arms, where it met the North & West line, taking its traffic on to Shrewsbury. This takes in the remarkable feats of engineering the Victorians undertook to forge this line across the Welsh hills, as we take a nostalgic look at a railway lost; its country stations, signal boxes and heavy goods and express trains largely replaced by simple request stops and single-car diesel units.
Download or read book The Lost Words written by and published by Edition Peters. This book was released on 2022-05 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lost Words by composer James Burton takes its inspiration and text from the award-winning 'cultural phenomenon' and book of the same name by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: a book that was, in turn, a creative response to the removal of everyday nature words like acorn, newt and otter from a new edition of a widely used children's dictionary. Both the book and Burton's 32-minute work, which is written in 12 short movements for upper-voice choir in up to 3 voice parts (with either orchestral or piano accompaniment), celebrates each lost word with a beautiful poem or 'spell', magically brought to life in Burton's music. At its heart, the work delivers a powerful message about the need to close the gap between childhood and the natural world. Burton's piece was co-commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé Children's Choir and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children's Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children's Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic. Vocal Score Co-commission by Boston Symphony and Hallé Concerts Society for their respective Children's Choirs. Two versions - with orchestral or with piano accompaniment. The vocal score is the same for both versions. James Burton is a composer but also a conductor. He is conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and choral director of the Boston Symphony. The book The Lost Words, exquisitely designed, has won multiple awards and is an international best-seller. The vocal score includes Jackie Morris's beautiful imagery in its cover design.
