Book Synopsis Australia's Lost Heroes by : Damien Wright
Download or read book Australia's Lost Heroes written by Damien Wright and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary book is both an engaging military history and an enthralling mystery. Australia’s Lost Heroes tells the astonishing little-known story of the Australian soldiers who fought the Red Army in Russia in 1919 and the personal odyssey, 100 years later, to locate and identify the lost grave of Victoria Cross hero Sergeant Samuel Pearse VC MM. The Anzac volunteers fought an arduous campaign punctuated by fierce ambushes in thick forest, swamps and marshes and attacks on fortified bunkers. They also had to fight a war within, avoiding the treachery and mutiny of White Russian ‘allies’. Remarkably, two Australians were awarded the Victoria Cross, one posthumously. Yet, unlike the reverence, recognition and commemoration afforded to WWI soldiers, not only do the deeds of Anzacs in Russia remain unrecognized, their graves lie lost and forgotten. Follow the author’s journey to a remote corner of Russia with the grandson of Samuel Pearse in the hope of identifying the lost grave. Guided by a Russian battlefield archaeologist, they discover an astonishing clue which may resolve the mystery of an Australian hero missing for 100 years. An extraordinary story of national importance dedicated to those forgotten Australian heroes who fought and died in Russia after the Armistice.

Book Synopsis Heritage Politics in Adelaide by : Sharon Mosler
Download or read book Heritage Politics in Adelaide written by Sharon Mosler and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s the Australian Commonwealth Government and three States, Victoria (1974), New South Wales (1977) and South Australia (1978), passed legislation to protect the built heritage within their jurisdictions. The legislation was primarily a response to two factors: a large number of public protests against the demolition of historic buildings in all Australian states by the 1970s and the influence of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, which the Whitlam Government (1972-75) embraced enthusiastically. The other states, with governments that were more influenced by development interests, were slow to follow the federal lead. In this study, Sharon Mosler examines heritage issues and conflicts in Adelaide from enactment of the first South Australian Heritage Act in 1978 to its successor in 1993, and also analyses issues leading from that period into the twenty-first century. State legislation introduced by the Labor government of Premier Mike Rann (2002 - present) has affected the built environment significantly since this book began. The Rann government has given the built heritage a low priority in its strategic plan compared to population growth, while the Adelaide City Council has become more balanced in the past decade, although the council too has focussed on increasing Adelaides population. The result has been more high-rise buildings at the expense of heritage conservation and historic precincts.

Book excerpt: Named Most Anticipated by: Bustle ・ Popsugar ・ Goodreads ・ Zibby Magazine・SheReads ・ Book Riot “A beautifully-written, deeply-felt exploration of what it means to love and be loved.”–– Jill Santopolo, New York Times bestselling author of The Light We Lost In love . . . For twenty-six-year-old Adelaide Williams, an American living in dreamy London, meeting Rory Hughes was like a lightning bolt out of the blue: this charming Englishman was The One she wasn’t even looking for. Is it enough? Does he respond to texts? Honor his commitments? Make advance plans? Sometimes, rarely, and no, not at all. But when he shines his light on her, the world makes sense, and Adelaide is convinced that, in his heart, he’s fallen just as deeply as she has. Then, when Rory is rocked by an unexpected tragedy, Adelaide does everything in her power to hold him together—even if it means losing herself in the process. When love asks too much of us, how do we find the strength to put ourselves first? With unflinching honesty and heart, this relatable debut from a fresh new voice explores grief and mental health while capturing the timeless nature of what it’s like to be young and in love—with your friends, with your city, and with a person who cannot, will not, love you back.
Book Synopsis An Endangered Species by : David Gower
Download or read book An Endangered Species written by David Gower and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a cricketer, David Gower was famed for the elegance of his strokeplay as one of England's greatest batsmen and for his superb fielding. As a captain, he led his country to Ashes success, yet some queried his application because it all seemed to come to him so easily and effortlessly. But that was never the whole story: Gower was always committed and a great competitor, as this fascinating and frank book, looking back on his life and career, shows. Once he retired from the game, Gower built a new career for himself, first as team captain in the long-running TV comedy series They Think It's All Over, and then as an astute and charming presenter and commentator with Sky Sports. After more than 30 years as one of the most popular figures in the game, Gower now reveals there is so much more to his story than the cliched image of 'Lord' Gower flying in his Tiger Moth. He is a man of great insight, determination and drive, but who also knows there is always more to be had from life.
