Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War Ledger provides fresh, sophisticated answers to fundamental questions about major modern wars: Why do major wars begin? What accounts for victory or defeat in war? How do victory and defeat influence the recovery of the combatants? Are the rules governing conflict behavior between nations the same since the advent of the nuclear era? The authors find such well-known theories as the balance of power and collective security systems inadequate to explain how conflict erupts in the international system. Their rigorous empirical analysis proves that the power-transition theory, hinging on economic, social, and political growth, is more accurate; it is the differential rate of growth of the two most powerful nations in the system—the dominant nation and the challenger—that destabilizes all members and precipitates world wars. Predictions of who will win or lose a war, the authors find, depend not only on the power potential of a nation but on the capability of its political systems to mobilize its resources—the "political capacity indicator." After examining the aftermath of major conflicts, the authors identify national growth as the determining factor in a nation's recovery. With victory, national capabilities may increase or decrease; with defeat, losses can be enormous. Unexpectedly, however, in less than two decades, losers make up for their losses and all combatants find themselves where they would have been had no war occurred. Finally, the authors address the question of nuclear arsenals. They find that these arsenals do not make the difference that is usually assumed. Nuclear weapons have not changed the structure of power on which international politics rests. Nor does the behavior of participants in nuclear confrontation meet the expectations set out in deterrence theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning historian reveals the harrowing forgotten story of America's internal slave trade—and its role in the making of America. Slave traders are peripheral figures in most histories of American slavery. But these men—who trafficked and sold over half a million enslaved people from the Upper South to the Deep South—were essential to slavery's expansion and fueled the growth and prosperity of the United States. In The Ledger and the Chain, acclaimed historian Joshua D. Rothman recounts the shocking story of the domestic slave trade by tracing the lives and careers of Isaac Franklin, John Armfield, and Rice Ballard, who built the largest and most powerful slave-trading operation in American history. Far from social outcasts, they were rich and widely respected businessmen, and their company sat at the center of capital flows connecting southern fields to northeastern banks. Bringing together entrepreneurial ambition and remorseless violence toward enslaved people, domestic slave traders produced an atrocity that forever transformed the nation.

Book excerpt: It all begins on Christmas morning, 1978. Dan Kennedy is ten years old and wants a black Gibson Les Paul guitar, the kind Peter Frampton plays. It will be his passport to the coolest (only) band in the neighborhood—Jokerz. He doesn’t get it. Instead, his parents present him with what they think he wants most, a real-estate loan calculator (called the Loan Arranger) and a maroon velour pullover shirt with a tan stripe across the chest. It is the first of what will become a lifetime of various-sized failures, misunderstandings, comical humiliations, and just plain silly choices that have dogged this “hipster Proust of youthful loserdom,” as author Jerry Stahl has so eloquently called Mr. Kennedy. Dan’s hilarious and painfully awkward youth soon develops into a . . . uh . . . hilarious and painfully awkward adulthood. His first two choices for university are Yale (Lit or Drama) and Harvard (Business), so he reviews his high school transcripts and decides on Butte Community College in Oroville, California, where he studies for about four and a half weeks. We could go on here and describe in detail all of Dan’s good-natured stabs at ambition, but he, himself, sums it all up quite nicely: “If you’ve ever tried and failed miserably at being a rock star (no guitar/talent), a professional bass fisherman, an extra in the movie Sleepless in Seattle (guy drinking martini in bar while Tom Hanks makes a phone call), a Madison Avenue advertising executive, a clerk/towel person at a suburban health club (named Kangaroo Kourts), an espresso street-cart owner and operator (in the one neighborhood of that coffee-swilling town, Seattle, where, remarkably, no one really seems to drink coffee), a dot.com millionaire, an MTV VJ, or a forest fire fighter, this book is for you.” Along the way, a few lessons are learned and we are treated to one of the most original, riotously funny, unsentimental, and offbeat memoirs in recent history. Dan’s a favorite in McSweeney’s and at the very popular Moth readings in New York City. We should be happy that he failed so miserably at so many things—and took notes!

Book excerpt: ledger: Discussing the blockchain startup ecosystem and how entrepreneurs around the world can leverage the power of decentralized finance to start and/or grow their businesses. There is a school of thought out there among some of the greatest minds of our generation. Well, an observation, actually. And it goes something like this: The true measure, the level of sophistication of any civilization - both past and present - can be processed and understood by analyzing the tools said group of people build/built to make their lives better. Today, archeologists and scientists around the world still cannot explain The Great Pyramid of Giza. There are still many, many unanswered questions pertaining to how the ancient Mayans were so far advanced in the areas of architecture, mathematics, and their famous logosyllabic scrip. It is said that we humans have logged more gains in terms of our advancements in technology in the last 50 years than we did in any other preceding period of time. We have gone from lobotomizing our afflicted as recent as the 1930s, to today's A. I -guided (virtually error-free) Neurosurgery methods, systems, and processes. The point being, we have come a long way as a species in a relatively short period of time. There are various theories as to how and why. I will not go into that at this time. I will say though, that our hunger for "more" has served us pretty well. Our desire to make our lives easier and to be connected to one another have led to a lot of the strides we have made in the area of technology over the last decade or so. We invented the (commercial) internet in 1983 and have not looked back since. I feel that we are on the precipice of yet another (equally) important iteration of our connection-desiring existence. I have a feeling that the invention of blockchain technology has, and will continue to be one of the most important steps we take forward in our quest, no, destiny to becoming a type three civilization. In Ledger, I try to talk about various observations I have made as a non-technical person and entrepreneur as it relates to blockchain technology, digital assets, and much more. I try to make the case for why, despite the accompanying controversy, I think enterprising young men and women around the world ought to look into ways in which some of these aforementioned tools can be harnessed to build products and services of great intrinsic value.

Book excerpt: . . . (my grandfather) said his father had died during the war. When he said it, he suddenly got this look in his eyes. Like he wanted something he could never get. I sensed something painful inside of him. Vulnerable and broken. Instinctively, I wanted to reach out to him. But I had no concept of the depth of the ocean he was swimming in . . . And so, the moment passed. And then he was smiling again. Back on point. For a long time after that, I felt like a window had opened in that moment—a window through which terrible secrets could be seen. If only I had the courage to look and the wisdom to understand them. Clues that could unlock a mystery that throbbed in our familial blood and infiltrated our dreams. Joey Ter-Mitchell spent his early years caught up in vicious cycles of bad influence, including crime, drugs, abuse, and psychological damage. Unsurprisingly, his life went on to become laden with addictions, recovery, and relapses as well as physical abuse, toxic relationships, car wrecks, arrests, jail, probation, and other painful realities—including “dying” at least once. He spent years riding a roller coaster of shame, chaos, and pain. But, thankfully, this isn’t where Joey’s story ends. In The Wealthy Loser, Joey describes how he was spared from ultimate destruction by the grace of God, and how he was led to uncover a family mystery at the core of the madness that ruled his life. While searching for healing and answers, Joey takes a journey into the past, where he discovers secrets that he comes to understand were the catalysts for a multi-generational tragedy. Beautifully weaving two stories, The Wealthy Loser is a poignant memoir about survival, redemption, healing, and most of all, love.

Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal Business Bestseller: This "vivid" inside story of WeWork and its CEO tells the remarkable saga of one of the most audacious, and improbable, rises and falls in American business history (Ken Auletta). Christened a potential savior of Silicon Valley's startup culture, Adam Neumann was set to take WeWork, his office share company disrupting the commercial real estate market, public, cash out on the company's forty-seven billion dollar valuation, and break the string of major startups unable to deliver to shareholders. But as employees knew, and investors soon found out, WeWork's capital was built on promises that the company was more than a real estate purveyor, that in fact it was a transformational technology company. Veteran journalist Reeves Weideman dives deep into WeWork and it CEO's astronomical rise, from the marijuana and tequila-filled board rooms to cult-like company summer camps and consciousness-raising with Anthony Kiedis. Billion Dollar Loser is a character-driven business narrative that captures, through the fascinating psyche of a billionaire founder and his wife and co-founder, the slippery state of global capitalism. A Wall Street Journal Business Bestseller “Vivid, carefully reported drama that readers will gulp down as if it were a fast-paced novel” (Ken Auletta)

Book excerpt: Young, cocksure, handsome and absurdly talented, Australian actor Heath Ledger shot to prominence with his first Hollywood film "10 Things I Hate About You": and a star was born. With huge charisma and smouldering looks lighting up the screen in a series of subsequent films, Heath was soon established as Hollywood A-list, dating a series of beauties such as Heather Graham and Naomi Watts, and living every young man's dream. But it was his award-winning and controversial role as Ennis Del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain" that cemented his place in the pantheon of acting greats - he was one of the youngest people ever to be nominated for an Oscar. And it was on the set of this film that he fell in love with his co-star Michelle Williams. Though the relationship wasn't to last, the couple had a daughter in 2005.With the world at his feet and a film-stealing turn in the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight", in the can, there was worldwide shock and disbelief when the news broke that he had been found dead in his New York apartment on 22 January 2008. Prescription drugs, found next to his dead body, were thought to be the cause, but mystery surrounded the circumstances. Was it an accidental death? Or were the pressures of life in the spotlight too great to bear? What is certain is that this young man, who touched the lives of so many people, leaves behind a grief-stricken public and family, including a two-year-old daughter. This is the tragic story of the brilliant actor whose light shone so brightly but all too briefly upon the world.
