Book excerpt: A large and growing number of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in the US and around the world have the potential to develop bilingualism and biliteracy if supported in their immediate environment. At the forefront in focusing exclusively on biliteracy development in early childhood across a variety of languages, this book provides both findings from empirical research with young bilinguals in home and school contexts and practical applications of these findings. Each chapter is structured in a similar format to offer parallel descriptions of the research, including a brief review of related empirical studies, an overview of the methods for data collection and analysis, a description of the main findings, and specific pedagogical implications to support educators’ efforts to construct meaningful, challenging, and dynamic literacy and language learning communities where one or more languages are used for communicating and learning. Pushing the field forward, this book is a valuable resource for helping literacy educators understand and respond to critical issues related to the development of young children’s literate competencies in two languages in home and school contexts.

Book Synopsis The Poetry and Poetics of Jorge Luis Borges by : Paul Cheselka
Download or read book The Poetry and Poetics of Jorge Luis Borges written by Paul Cheselka and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1987 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study traces Borges' career as a poet from his earliest poetic endeavors before the 1923 publication of Fervor de Buenos Aires through the middle of the 1960's. Paul Cheselka considers Borges' better-known poetry collections, such as Fervor de Buenos Aires, Luna de enfrente, and Cuaderno San Martín; and he shows the often-neglected 1930-1960 period to be an important phase in the evolution of Borges' poetry. The poems are studied chronologically with particular emphasis on the relation of their themes to the poet's life and ideas. Cheselka's contribution is that of providing a clearer delineation of borgesian poetics; the poems themselves are shown to be the evidence and very substance of the poets's definitions.

Book Synopsis Aspect and the Categorization of States by : David Brian Roby
Download or read book Aspect and the Categorization of States written by David Brian Roby and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, the Spanish copulae ser and estar are argued to be aspectual morphemes. Their binary opposition reflects the universal aspectual values [±Perfective], which are the same ones overtly expressed by the preterite and imperfect past tense forms in Spanish. It can therefore be shown that different types of states, just like different types of events, can be categorized based on their aspectual composition. Additionally, the inherent semantic differences between events and states can be accounted for by analyzing aspect as applying to events internally and to states externally. A useful resource for the beginning linguist as well as the most seasoned analyst, this work is written in language that is easy to understand while remaining faithful to all of the appropriate relevant technical terminology. Anyone who is seriously interested in exploring why the Spanish verbs ser and estar are used the way they are should read this book.
