Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using cultural theory, author R. Bruce Brasell investigates issues surrounding the discursive presentation of the American South as biracial and explores its manifestation in documentary films, including such works as Tell about the South, bro•ken/ground, and Family Name. After considering the emergence of the region’s biraciality through a consideration of the concepts of racial citizenry and racial performativity, Brasell examines two problems associated with this framework. First, the framework assumes racial purity, and, second, it assumes that two races exist. In other words, biraciality enacts two denials, first, the existence of miscegenation in the region and, second, the existence of other races and ethnicities. Brasell considers bodily miscegenation, discussing the racial closet and the southeastern expatriate road film. Then he examines cultural miscegenation through the lens of racial poaching and 1970s southeastern documentaries that use redemptive ethnography. In the subsequent chapters, using specific documentary films, he considers the racial in-betweenness of Spanish-speaking ethnicities (Mosquitoes and High Water, Living in America, Nuestra Communidad), probes issues related to the process of racial negotiation experienced by Asian Americans as they seek a racial position beyond the black and white binary (Mississippi Triangle), and engages the problem of racial legitimacy confronted by federally nonrecognized Native groups as they attempt the same feat (Real Indian).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Days before the tumultuous presidential election of 1868, St. Bernard Parish descended into chaos. As African American men gained the right to vote, white Democrats of the parish feared losing their majority. Armed groups mobilized to suppress these recently emancipated voters in the hopes of regaining a way of life turned upside down by the Civil War and Reconstruction. Freedpeople were dragged from their homes and murdered in cold blood. Many fled to the cane fields to hide from their attackers. The reported number of those killed varies from 35 to 135. The tragedy was hidden, but implications reverberated throughout the South and lingered for generations. Author and historian Chris Dier reveals the horrifying true story behind the St. Bernard Parish Massacre.

Book excerpt: Filipino Americans are one of the three largest Asian American groups in the United States and the second largest immigrant population in the country. Yet within the field of Asian American Studies, Filipino American history and culture have received comparatively less attention than have other ethnic groups. Over the past twenty years, however, Filipino American scholars across various disciplines have published numerous books and research articles, as a way of addressing their unique concerns and experiences as an ethnic group. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Filipina/x/o American Studies, the first on the topic of Filipino American Studies, offers a comprehensive survey of an emerging field, focusing on the Filipino diaspora in the United States as well as highlighting issues facing immigrant groups in general. It covers a broad range of topics and disciplines including activism and education, arts and humanities, health, history and historical figures, immigration, psychology, regional trends, and sociology and social issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Venezuelan Stick Fighting: The Civilizing Process in Martial Arts, Michael J. Ryan examines the modern and historical role of the secretive tradition of stick fighting within rural Venezuela. Despite profound political and economic changes from the early twentieth century to the modern day, traditional values, practices, and imaginaries associated with older forms of masculinity and sociality are still valued. Stick, knife, and machete fighting are understood as key means of instilling the values of fortitude and cunning in younger generations. Recommended for scholars of anthropology, social science, gender studies, and Latin American studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage project, an ongoing and comprehensive program to locate, identify, preserve, and disseminate the literary contributions of U.S. Latinos, can now be considered a field in academia. The effort cuts across various disciplines, including literature and linguistics, history, ethnic studies, women's studies, library science and others. This historic fourth volume of articles celebrates the diversity of scholars contributing research to this fast advancing discipline. This corpus represents the finished, re-worked product of the biannual conferences of Recovery, providing theoretical and practical approaches, as well as critical studies on specific texts recovered from Hispanic expressive culture. Silvio Torres-Saillant's introduction, "Inscribing Latinos in the National Discourse," brilliantly conceptualizes and unifies a broad historical swath that encompasses the Spanish and English-language expression of Hispanic natives, immigrants and exiles from the colonial period to 1960. Essays cover such broad topics as "Conquista o compra? Dos interpretaciones del Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo"; "Remapping the Archive: Recovered Literature and the Deterritorialization of the Canon"; "Anonimo No More: Toward a Transnational Theory of Nineteenth-Century Poetic Practice"; "Pastoras and Malinches: Women in a Traditional Folk Drama"; and "Fighting on Two Fronts: Jose de la Luz Saenz and the Language of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement." This is the fourth in a series of volumes collecting essays by leading scholars on the Hispanic literary history of the United States. The articles presented here will help to acquaint both experts and neophytes with important recent work accomplished in this field. This anthology illustrates the full scope of diverse Hispanic literary expression over some three hundred years; discusses canonization, class, gender, and ethnic identity; and addresses the reconstituting of an important segment of the cultural heritage (and overall identity) of the United States. In this comprehensive volume of great range are transcriptions of narratives in many genres, from diverse voices, and from all regions of the state. Told in settings ranging from the front porch to the festival stage, these tales proclaim the great vitality and variety of Louisiana's oral narrative traditions. Given special focus are Harold Talbert, Lonnie Gray, Bel Abbey, Ben Guiné, and Enola Matthews—whose wealth of imagination, memory, and artistry demonstrates the depth as well as the breadth of the storyteller's craft. For tales told in Cajun and Creole French, Koasati, and Spanish, the editors have supplied both the original language and English translation. To the volume Maida Owens has contributed an overview of Louisiana's folk culture and a survey of folklife studies of various regions of the state. Car Lindahl's introduction and notes discuss the various genres and styles of storytelling common in Louisiana and link them with the worldwide are of the folktale.
