Book Synopsis Social Movements in Chile by : Sofia Donoso
Download or read book Social Movements in Chile written by Sofia Donoso and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents rich empirical analyses of the most important movements in Chile’s post-transition era: the Student Movement, the Mapuche Movement, the Labor Movement, the Feminist Movement, and the Environmental Movement. The chapters illuminate the processes that led to their emergence, and detail how actors developed new strategies, or revisited old ones, to influence the political arena. The book also offers contributions that situate these cases both in terms of the general trends in protest in Chile, as well as in comparison to other countries in Latin America. Emphasizing various facets of the debate about the relationship between “institutional” and “non-institutional” politics, this volume not only contributes to the study of collective action in Chile, but also to the broader social movement literature.
Book Synopsis Organized Labour in the 21st Century by : A. V. Jose
Download or read book Organized Labour in the 21st Century written by A. V. Jose and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected case studies which explore the theme of trade union responses to globalisation, in order to illustrate experiences drawn from three broad groups of countries: industrialised, middle-income and developing economies. Country case studies include: Japan, Sweden, the United States, Chile, Israel, Korea, India and South Africa. These studies seek to promote wider understanding of the role and changing priorities of organised labour in a range of countries at varying stages of development. They highlight the fact that the major challenge for unions in all countries, notably developing countries, is the representation of non-traditional sectors, and the provision of new services.
Book Synopsis Labour Law in Chile by : Emilio Morgado-Valenzuela
Download or read book Labour Law in Chile written by Emilio Morgado-Valenzuela and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this monograph on Chile not only describes and analyses the legal aspects of labour relations, but also examines labour relations practices and developing trends. It provides a survey of the subject that is both usefully brief and sufficiently detailed to answer most questions likely to arise in any pertinent legal setting. Both individual and collective labour relations are covered in ample detail, with attention to such underlying and pervasive factors as employment contracts, suspension of the contracts, dismissal laws and covenant of non-competition, as well as international private law. The author describes all important details of the law governing hours and wages, benefits, intellectual property implications, trade union activity, employers’ associations, workers’ participation, collective bargaining, industrial disputes, and much more. Building on a clear overview of labour law and labour relations, the book offers practical guidance on which sound preliminary decisions may be based. It will find a ready readership among lawyers representing parties with interests in Chile, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative trends in laws affecting labour and labour relations.

Book Synopsis John Dewey's Great Debates - Reconstructed by : Shane Ralston
Download or read book John Dewey's Great Debates - Reconstructed written by Shane Ralston and published by IAP. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confirming his moniker as “America’s philosopher of democracy,” John Dewey engaged in a series of public debates over the course of his lifetime, vividly demonstrating how his thought translates into action. These debates made Dewey a household name and a renowned public intellectual during the early to mid-twentieth century, a time when the United States fought two World Wars, struggled through an economic depression, experienced explosive economic growth and spawned a grassroots movement that characterized an entire era: Progressivism. Unfortunately, much recent Dewey scholarship neglects to situate Dewey’s ideas in the broader context of his activities and engagements as a public intellectual. This project charts a path through two of Dewey’s actual debates with his contemporaries, Leon Trotsky and Robert Hutchins, to two reconstructed debates with contemporary intellectuals, E.D. Hirsch and Robert Talisse, both of whom criticized Dewey’s ideas long after the American philosopher’s death and, finally, to two recent debates, one on home schooling and the other on U.S. foreign policy, in which Dewey’s ideas offer a unique and compelling vision of a way forward.
