Book excerpt: Notre objectif dans ce travail de recherche est double: (1) d'abord en s'éloignant des modèles traditionnels de la performance à l'exportation, notre ambition est de proposer un schéma représentationnel de la performance à l'exportation tenant compte du rôle important de l'entrepreneur dirigeant de la PME et des ressources dont il dispose. (2) Puis, nous avons relié cette perspective de recherche à un cadre d'internationalisation élaboré dans le contexte des PME afin de comprendre leur mode d'internationalisation. Autrement dit, nous nous interrogeons sur la manière dont la performance à l'exportation doit être pilotée: est-ce à travers les représentations et les perceptions des dirigeants ou à travers l'actif de ressources que possède l'entreprise. Pour répondre à cette question de recherche, l'étude de cas se présente comme moyen approprié puisqu'il s'agit de rendre intelligible la performance à l'exportation. Nous avons retenu trois études de cas que nous avons analysé en recourant à l'entretien et la documentation, soutenus par un autre support méthodologique, la carte cognitive. Les résultats confirment l'importance des ressources engagées et de la représentation que nous avons assimilée au schéma cognitif du dirigeant dans l'explication de la différence des performances à l'exportation des petites entreprises. La capacité d'articuler les ressources à travers un schéma cognitif clair et complexe est, ainsi, nécessaire pour conduire vers une internationalisation réussie
