Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lorenzo the Magnificent and Florence in Her Golden Age Roscoe's book, written nearly a century ago, can never be entirely superseded. It retains, moreover, among its many excellences, the prestige attaching to the work of a pioneer. But in the course of a century much fresh light has been thrown on Lorenzo's work and character. Baron von Reumont, therefore, supplied a pressing need by the publication of his volumes, based on most minute, careful and conscientious researches. Almost every available document and source was ransacked by Von Reumont to provide material for his book, and, since his researches were completed, comparatively little that is fresh has come to light. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lorenzo the Magnificent and Florence in Her Golden Age This book has been written for those who will read it whoever they may be, though the writer is not without hope that serious students of the Italian Renaissance will find it - or parts of it - not wholly unworthy of their attention. I am well aware that there are works of great excellence upon Lorenzo dei Medici already open to the English reader. None the less I will venture to make an effort to justify the appearance of another. Of existing works in English there are three which may claim to be classics - Mr. Roscoe's life of Lorenzo dei Medici; the English translation of Baron von Reumont's elaborate study; and Mr. Armstrong's monograph. Roscoe's book, written nearly a century ago, can never be entirely superseded. But it must be confessed that the English translation of Von Reumont's Lorenzo is - to put it frankly - unreadable. However much it may be a treasure to the student, to the general reader it is a terror. It is full of inaccuracies and almost wholly lacking in style. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Lorenzo De' Medici, Called the Magnificent From this full blaze of talents, the author has turned towards a period, when its first faint gleams afford a subject, if not more interesting, at least more suited to his powers; when, after a night of unexpected darkness, Florence again saw the sun break forth with a lustre more permanent, though perhaps not so bright. The days of Dante, of Boc caccio, and of Petrarca, were indeed past; but under the auspices of the House of Medici, and particularly through the ardour and example of Lorenzo, the empire of science and true taste was again restored. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Lorenzo De' Medici, Called the Magnificent, Vol. 2 Soon after the termination of hostilities between Six tus IV. And the republic of Florence, Lorenzo began to unfold those comprehensive plans for securing the peace of Italy on a permanent foundation, which confer the highest honour on his political life. Of the extensive authority which he had obtained by his late conduct, every day afforded additional proof; and it appears to have been his intention to employ it for the wisest and most salutary purposes. By whatever motives he was led to this great attempt, he, pursued it with deep policy and unceasing assiduity, and finally experiended a degree of success equal to his warmest expectations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations, Historical and Critical of the Life of Lorenzo De Medici, Called the Magnificent: With an Appendix of Original and Other Documents Not long after the publication of my work, I received, through the obliging attention of the late earl of Bristol, bishop of Derry, then in Italy, a copy in manuscript of a professed crio' fique on the Life of Lorenzo, the production of a learned foreigner, who appeared to be well acquainted with the subject, and fully compoa tent, to judge of the various topics there dist cussed. Although this piece was sent me with out the name of the author, I did not long re; main in doubt on that head, another copy having been obligingly transmitted to me by Francis Drake, Esq., with the information that it was the production of the late Abate Andres, who, although he was a native of Spain, is well known by his proficiency in Italian literature, and par ticularly as the author of the extensive work. Book excerpt: A vividly colorful portrait of one of the greatest and most fascinating figures of the Renaissance, Lorenzo de' Medici, focusing on his role as a brilliant—sometimes ruthless—statesman who was responsible for the artistic flowering of Florence, the city where the Renaissance first blossomed. Lorenzo de' Medici—a leading statesman, the uncrowned ruler of Florence during its golden age, a true Renaissance man known to history as Il Magnifico (the Magnificent). Lorenzo was not only the foremost patron of his day but also a renowned poet, equally adept at composing philosophical verses and obscene rhymes to be sung at Carnival. He befriended the greatest artists and writers of the time—Leonardo, Botticelli, Poliziano, and, especially, Michelangelo, whom he discovered as a young boy and invited to live at his palace—and, in the process, turned Florence into the cultural capital of Europe. Though Lorenzo's grandfather Cosimo had converted the vast wealth of the family bank into political power, Lorenzo's position was precarious. Bitter rivalries among the leading Florentine families and competition among the squabbling Italian states meant that Lorenzo's life was under constant threat. Those who plotted his death included a pope, a king, and a duke, but Lorenzo used his legendary charm and diplomatic skill—as well as occasional acts of violence—to navigate the murderous labyrinth of Italian politics. Florence in the age of Lorenzo was a city of contrasts, of unparalleled artistic brilliance and unimaginable squalor in the city's crowded tenements; of both pagan excess and the fire-and-brimstone sermons of the Dominican preacher Savonarola. Florence gave birth to both the otherworldly perfection of Botticelli's Primavera and the gritty realism of Machiavelli's The Prince. Nowhere was this world of contrasts more perfectly embodied than in the life and character of the man who ruled this most fascinating city.

They exiled Cosimo to Venetian territory along with Lorenzo and a few chiefs of the defeated party. Cosimo bore the blow philosophically. After all, the lot of the vanquished was usually more severe. He still had his health, his money and - what the Albizzi did not realize - his popularity in Flor/ ence. Venice was a pleasant place. The aristocrats of the islands were pleased to honor him, for they were shrewd and knew that the exiled Florentine of today might be the ruler of tomorrow. Cosimo knew it too and kept up a voluminous correspondence with friends at home.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
